on:The dashing Joy Mukherji, a Shammi Kapoor clone ( I do not call him poor man’s Shammi Kapoor, that title is reserved for Vishwajeet) sings a piano song in his home production “Humsaaya”. The movie itself was a failure, but this song survived and was the saving grace for this disaster of a movie.
The unknown lyricist Shevan Rizvi has written a wonderful song, which was composed so nicely by O P Nayyar. Alas, the stars of Joy Mukherjee as well as O P Nayyar, unknown to themselves as well as others, were on terminal decline, and they could never regain their glory days.
Song- Dil ki aawaz bhi sun mere fasaane pe na jaa ( Hum saaya) (1968) Singer- Rafi, Lyrics- Shevan Rizvi, MD- O P Nayyar
Lyrics
ishq maasoom hai ishq maasoom hai
waqt insaan pe aisaa bhi kabhi aataa hai
raah mein chhodke saayaa bhi chalaa jaataa hai
waqt insaan pe aisaa bhi kabhi aataa hai
raah mein chhodke saayaa bhi chalaa jaataa hai
main haqeeqat hoon
main haqeeqat hoon ye ik roz dikhaaoongaa tujhe
begunaahi pe muhabbat ki rulaaongaa tujhe
main haqeeqat hoon ye ik roz dikhaaoongaa tujhe

Shevan Rizvi was from Poona, India. My great grand uncle. This was a pen name he adopted and was known by this name.

What poetry ! And sung by rafi with such feeling and humility. The lyrics of this song are embedded in my mind along with hundred others. The days of radio were the very best, we got to hear all and sundry, old and new, good and not so good also without prejudice towards anyone. The really memorable one stuck in memory.
Joy mukherjee was one of the lucky ones to get all rafi/opn gems songs to sing on screen. Being from a film industry family also helped to a great extent.

The movie may have sunk but this isn’t the only memorable song from it.
There are three Asha solos worth mentioning:
1) Woh Haseen Dard De Do
2) Kitna Haseen Hai Ye Jahan
3) Aaja Mere Pyar Ke Sahaare
First one of these has been posted on this blog.
Overall, ’68 was a good year for OPN. He had scored for Kismat, Kahin Din Kahin Raat, Dil Aur Mohabbat, Shrimanji and Humsaya. By this time, the likes of RDB had changed the face of hindi film music by introducing overtly western beats, instruments and rhythms, thus driving the last nail in the coffin of the so called golden age of film music.

Nice song, Atul.
Am not sure OP Nayyar’s decline was not to some extent inflicted by his own somewhat egoistic stance. He had problems with various big personalities and ended up burning bridges.
