Ajeeb saaneha mujh par guzar gayaa yaaron

on:Anil Biswas, one of the pioneers of Hindi movie music once opined that Sajjad Hussain and Jaidev were the most talented music directors in his opinion. Coming from Anil Biswas, it was high praise indeed.
Not just Anil Biswas, even music lovers had a high opinion of his music, irrespective of the fate of the movies . Even the Govt of India had a high opinion of his music, which is reflected in the fact that he won the national award for the best music director no less than three times. He is the only one among the music directors of Hidi movies to have achieved this distinction.
It is so unfortunate that the producers of Hindi movies did not find much use of Jaidev’s talent in their mvies. In a career that spanned from 1950s to 1980s, Jaidev worked in less than fifty movies.
Music of movies like “Ham Dono” (1961), “Kinaare Kinaare” (1963), “Mujhe Jeene Do” (1963), “Do Boond Paani” (1971), “Reshma Aur Shera” (1972), “Prem Parbat” (1973), “Gharonda” etc etc are remembered even today.
Jaidev won the national award for the best music director for “”Reshma Aur Shera” (1972), “Gaman” (1979) and “Ankahee”(1985)
On the occasion of Jaidev’s birth anniversary (3 august), here is a song from “Gaman” (1979). This song is sung by Hariharan. Lyrics are by Shaharyar.
This superb song enabled Hariharan to make his mark as a playback singer of note.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

ajeeb saaneha mujh par guzar gaya yaaron
ajeeb saaneha mujh par guzar gaya yaaron
main apne saaye se
main apne saaye se kal raat darr gaya yaaron
ajeeb saaniha
har ek naqsh tamanna ka ho gaya dhundhla
har ek naqsh tamanna ka ho gaya dhundhla
har ek zakhm mere dil ka bhar gaya yaaron
har ek zakhm mere dil ka bhar gaya yaaron
ajeeb saaniha
bhatak rahi thhi
bhatak rahi thhi jo kashti
wo garq e aab huyi
chadhaa hua thha jo dariya utar gaya yaaron
chadhaa hua thha jo dariya utar gaya yaaron
ajeeb saaniha
wo kaun thha
wo kaun thha wo kahaan ka thha
kya hua thha use
suna hai aaj koi
shaksh mar gaya yaaron
suna hai aaj koi
shaksh mar gaya yaaron
ajeeb saaneha mujh par guzar gaya yaaron
main apne saaye se kal raat darr gaya yaaron
ajeeb saaneha

Sudhirji,
Jab bhi samay mile to iska anuwaad kar sakoge? Two words were giving me a real pain- garq e aab/gaqr e aab AND dariya/zariya. I think Nahm can explain/translate those two word for me.
Thanks

khyati ji & Prakash ji,
Thanks for reminding of this song. I had also lost track of this song.
These lines are the most meaningful.
wo kaun thha wo kahaan ka thha kya hua thha use
suna hai aaj koi shaksh mar gaya yaaron
In city life, where death is a daily occurance and no one bothers. People just discuss, that some body living there or in that building has died, and leave it at that.
bhatak rahi thhi jo kashti wo garq e aab huyi
chadhaa hua thha jo dariya utar gaya yaaron
This refers to high tide in the river, or jwaar-bhata in life.
A life with purpose and direction is finally destroyed even as the turbulence(in the shape of high tide in the river) in its life is over.
And
Saaneha’ – tragedy, or shocking tragic incident.
Ajeeb saaneha mujh par guzar gayaa yaaron
main apne saaye se kal raat dar gayaa yaaron
It is a tragedy, shcoking and disappointing that I was afraid to look at myself in the eye.

Khyati ji,
I did the translation in a hurry, so one sha’ir remains to be explained. And there is slight mistake in this sha’ir, meaning :
bhatak rahi thhi jo kashti wo garq e aab huyi
chadhaa hua thha jo dariya utar gaya yaaron
This refers to high tide in the river, or jwaar-bhata in life.
A life without purpose and direction is finally destroyed even as the turbulence(in the shape of high tide in the river) in its life is over.
Remaining shair :
har ek naqsh tamanna ka ho gaya dhundhla
har ek zakhm mere dil ka bhar gaya yaaron
This means time is a great healer and i dont feel the pain the my lost desires anymore. As the instensity of all feelings has become dull. This is also happening because one is so involved in baser things like earning livelihood.
I have heard this ghazal again just now. Earlier i was in office and someone wanted to use the computer. I dont think Hariharan is understanding the language, he is just singing the words. That is what i feel. His later songs are much better.

Thanks Nahm for the in depth translation. My belief is that if you know the language, you know the meaning of the words you are listening and you can cherish the beauty of it. For a singer, knowing the language is utmost important as he/she needs to express the feeling of an actor. Rafi sahab is mein maharathi the.

Thanks to all the contributors for their gracious comments.
Khyatiji’s comments reminded me on a music programme in which Shanti Hiranand, noted ghazal singer was talking about her Guru, Begum Akhtar. Begum Akhtar was often presented ghazals in writing by the poets. If she was interested, she would insist that the poet recites it to her. Begum Akhar used to say that one can get the meaning the poet wishes to convey only when you hear him recite it.

LET Me try to complete
Saneha misfortune turn of events of life
Occurred in such a way that what I fear most and hate most is MYSELF
The carving of desires on my heart (my passions love aims aspirations etc) are too dying .The extreme desires of our hearts give us the pain in life.but wound of my desires too are getting healed i don’t feel their pain anymore death of old and new desires
The wandering ship of my life has drowned
Chada hua tha jo Daria ie the flow of life in my blood vessels too have stopped ie No SIGNS of life are to be found in me
Wo kaun tha verse
Just as iam alive but dead from my heart others too are suffering same disease so death of a person doesn’t evoke any response in us or in our society

Prakashbhai,
Ye mera bhi most fav gaana hai. This is on the top of my list of Jaidevji’s songs. I can listen to this song many times/day without loosing interest. Ek nasha sa chadhta hai har ek baar sun ne ke baad, jo badhta hi jaata hai. I was not aware of the fact that Jaidevji got three National Awards. Atulji, thanks for this info.
