on:“Sabse Bada Rupaiyya” (1976) was a Balaji Kalamandir Production. It was produced by Mehmood and directed by S Ramnathan. The movie had Mahmood, Vinod Mehra, Moushumi Chatterjee, Farida Jalal, Jeevan, Sulochana Latkar, Nivedita, Madhu, ChandraShekhar, Agha, Mukri, Sunder, Randhir, Asit Sen, Keshto Mukherjee,
Anwar Ali, Sheikh, Bhushan Tiwari, Babban, Nausir Khatau, Janki Das, Polson,Mulchand, Amir Ali, Narbada Shankar, Ghosh, Saigal, Chavan, Chand, Somender, Parikh, Badshah, Rachna etc in it.
Mehmood, who had given R D Burman his first break as an independent music director with “Chhote Nawab” in 1961 likewise gave Basu and Manohari, two assistants of R D Burman, an opportunity to compose music in this movie.
The duo gave music in this movie under the name of Basu Manohari. They did a decent job of it. A few songs of this movie became popular too.
I have discussed one song from this movie in the past, which was a Kishore Kumar Lata duet song namely Waada karo jaanam na chhodoge ye daaman (Sabse Bada Rupaiyya) .
Here is another Kishore Kumar-Lata duet from this movie. This song is picturised on Farida Jalala and Vinod Mehra, with Mausami Chatterji looking on from a distance and feeling jealous.
Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist of this song. He has used lots of words in this song which are unfamiliar to most Hindi speakers.
Manohari Singh, one of the duo of this music director team left for the heavenly abode this day (13 july) two year ago. An accomplished Saxophone player, Manohari Singh worked with most music directors of the golden era, viz S D Burman, O P Nayyar, Shankar Jaikishan, Ravi, Laxmikant Pyarelal, R D Burman etc, either as a musician or as a music arranger.
Manohari Singh played saxophone in several well known songs composed viz “Aawaaz deke hamen tum bulaao” (Junglee),”Gaata Rahe Mera Dil” (Guide), “Main Aaya Hoon” (Amir Gareeb), “Mehbooba mehbooba” (Sholay) etc.
Here is this delightful song from “Sabse Bada Rupaiyya” (1976) which was quite popular during its time.

This song, once upon a time, was favorite among picnickers. Later, a few remix versions of this song were also produced which also became popular. One of the most popular remix of this song is : http://youtu.be/FaWPzefvqX4
This song as well as dance is based on a Koli (fisherman) folk song and dance. Kolis are natives of places in around Mumbai sea coast. There are few colloquial Marathi words that have been used in this song which I am aware of :
poree = ladki = girl
poraa = ladka = boy
satouti = satati = troubling
‘go’ in the lyrics should be ‘ga’ which is generally used as an exclamation. Example : the famous ‘aayi ga’ that used to be uttered by wicket keeper Nayan Mongia when a batsman missed a bowl bowled by a spinner.
