Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Kaanon ki ek nagri dekhi

This article is written by Khyati Bhatt, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

In life, every body has a target. We have seen different people choose different routes to reach the same target as they prefer one route over another according to their likings. Target of Atulji’s blog is not to produce another version of HFGK. But to give all hindi film song lovers a chance to cherish songs from different contributors with full lyrics and comments, which is then followed by discussion on the story line of the movies and the artists by our in house encyclopedia, Shri Arunji and others join in.

Contributors of this blog have their own unique ways of discussing songs. Rajaji loves loves to discuss songs from 70’s since he says he lived through that era, Sudhirji discusses song as well as translates them so that even Non Hindi/Urdu speakers can savour the songs, Atulji can’t resist a song with a pet, specially dog and cat, Sadanandji discusses famous songs from the past for which he gets comments like “wow! ye gana to maine 25 saal ke baad suna” :). Prakashji recently had three songs of Miss Cocacola posted in four days (missed the hattrick! April 12,13 & 15), Nitinbhai gets comments like “ye gana to maine pehli baar suna” for his obscure but melodious songs. Ava loves and shares NFS songs, Nahmji is making her fans happy and satisfied by upgrading herself from a lyrics contributor to a writeups contributor. Atif bhai is solid and dependable, Rahul Dravid style in coming up with wonderful songs from the past. Last but not the least, Peevesie’s Mom & Peevesie, an inspirational Maa-Beti jodi add their own unique flavour to the blog by their contributions.

How lucky we are that Atulji is allowing all of us to share our joy and happiness with others, by sacrificing so much of his time and money (just read his internet expenditure story of crossing six figures in three months 😦 . Recently, Arunji gave us a new direction/path by providing list of movies starting with “a” where all but 1 or 2 songs had already been discussed in the blog. That made it easier for us to contribute the missing songs and the creative Atulji began to provide a different color code to the title of such movies in the song listings.

Keeping that target in my mind, I have chosen a song from the movie Aashirwad-68. This movie has a special place in “my favorite movie listing” as it deals with the most pious relationship of a father and a daughter.

My favorite song, “ek tha bachpan……” from this movie has already been posted and so I selected this song as it is sung and acted by Ashok Kumar, my father’s most favorite hero along with K L Saigal. Few months back when my parents visited me, they both saw the dvd of this movie and my father got very emotional with the story and AK’s acting.

I have seen this movie as many as six times and I can watch it many more times. Ashok Kumar gave a sterling and moving performance in this movie. Along with AK, this film stars Sanjeev Kumar, Sumita Sanyal, Veena, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Bipin Gupta, Abhi Bhattacharya, Baby Sarika and few more. The movie was jointly produced by Hrishikesh Mukherjee & N C Sippy. Direction, Story, Screenplay & Edition was by HM. Dialogues were written by Gulzar and music was composed by Vasant Desai. Two lyricists, Gulzar & Harindranath Chattopadhyay wrote all songs of this movie, with this particular song being written by Gulzar. Ashok Kumat got 1969 Filmfare & National Award in Best Actor Category. The film received 1969 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

Here is this song from “Aasheerwaad” (1968) which will leave the listeners suitable amused and rofl. Unfortunately only the audio of this song is available, but listening to the audio itself is an experience to savour and cherish.

Song-Kaanon ki ek nagri dekhi (Aasheerwaad)(1968) Singers-Ashok Kumar, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Lyrics-Gulzar, Md-Vasant Desai
Chorus

Lyrics

shuroo
shuroo hoja
apni kavita ki nok jhonk

bhai kaanon ki ek nagri dekhi
jismein saare kaane thhey
kaanon ki ek nagri dekhi
jismein saare kaane thhey
wahan ek taraf bhai ahmak(???) saare
ek taraf se syaane thhe

kaanon ki
kaanon ki ek nagri dekhi
jismein saare kaane thhey

bhai dariyaa pul pe chalta hai
wahan paani mein railen chalti thhin
paani mein railen chalti thhin
aur langooron ki dum par
angooron ki bailey pakti thhin
angooron ki bailey pakti thhin
wahan choohe ghanti baandh ke
peechhe daud lagate the

peechhe daud lagate the
khaali pet pe haath bajaakar
sab qawwali gaate thhey

bhai waah waah bhai waah waah
bhai waah waah waah waah

chandani raat mein chhaata lekar
baahar jaaya karte thhey
baahar jaaya karte the
aur oas gire to kahte hain
wahaan sar phat jaaya karte the
aha kaanon ki
kaanon ki ek nagri dekhi
jismein saare kaane thhey

chhoot ki ek beemaari phaili
haay haay

waah waah guru waah waah
ek dafa un kaanon mein
arre re kya hua guru
sunte hai ki bhookh ke keede
khet ke ookh ke daanon mein

achha to ye baat thhi
to suno guru
roz kayi kaane bechaare
marte thhey beemari mein
waah waah jogi thakur
aur us waqt ullu ka pathha
raja sota thaa
kahaan
kaho guru kaho
kahaan kahaan
sone ki almaari mein
waah waah waah waah
jab kaani bhainsh ne phool phoolakar
chheda been ka baaja
chheda been ka baaja
jab kaala chahsma pahan ke
singhashan par aaya raja

aaya raja
aaya raja

haaye haaye dard bhari
fariyaad se uski
aankhen paani paani thhin
uski ankhen paani paani thhin
tab dekha kaale raja ki
dono ankhen kaani thhin

waah waah
aha kaanon ki
aha kaanon ki
kaanon ki ek nagri dekhi
jismein saare kaane thhey
kaanon ki ek nagri dekhi
jismein saare kaane thhey

he ae ae ae
jhootha hai jo andhi nagri
ee ee ee ee
kaana raja kehta hai
waah jogi thakur waah
he ae ae ae
jaakar dekho kaani nagri
ee ee ee ee
waah waah waah
andha raja rehta hai
rehta hai
waah waah

jhootha hai jo andhi nagri
kaana raja kehta hai
jhootha hai jo andhi nagri
kana raja kehta hai

are jaakar dekho kaani nagri
andha raja rehta hai
jhootha hai jo andhi nagri
kana raja kehta hai
jhootha hai jo andhi nagri
kaana raaja kehta hai

I planned of doing something like Atulji, put it the action and started the blog, getting so many WAH WAH…from all music lovers, including Atulji, Arunji, Sudhirji, Rajaji, Prakashji, you, Nahmji, ……not to forget Surjit Singh ji also. I was like flying in the air…………..lekin jab aankh khuli to pata chala ki woh to sapna tha 😦 .
Hope you got the point. Main to sapne mein bhi ye sapna nahi dekh sakti. Woh to sirf Amol Palekar hi kar sakta hai….
sapne mein dekha sapne…….(Golmaal song)

Atulji is so great.

What a sweet write-up, Khyatiji. 🙂 You are very observant to have noticed the writing styles of various contributors here. Speaking for myself, I love 70s songs, no doubt, but I also love (even more) songs of earlier decades. I just feel more comfortable writing on 70s songs because I lived through that period. 🙂

And what a fantastic song too. I’ve seen this movie a long, long time ago. I remember Ashok Kumar very well in this film – he was the main character and was just superb (he almost always is). After listening to this song, I now plan to watch the movie again. Thanks for refreshing this movie in my memory.

Raja sab,
mujhe ye bhi pata hai ki aap purane gano ko bhi pasand karte hai but in your write up of 70s, you are a different person (of course in a good way) lagta hai ki aap woh pal jee rahe ho.
