Aji qibla mohtarma kabhi shola kabhi naghma

I am totally overwhelmed with the response to my first write up. I want to thank Atul ji for posting it almost immediately. Thus encouraged I am now ready to do my second post. What could be the second step after a Lata solo ? No prizes for quessing, it has to be a Rafi solo. Mohammed Rafi solo by O.P.Nayyar to be precise. I would have preferred to have a solo song by S D Burman. I like O.P.Nayyar songs a lot, but S D Burman and Madan Mohan’s songs are my favourites. I have a few song by them lined up for discussion, Atul ji permitting.
This is a song from the film “Phir wohi dil laaya hoon”. It was some kind of musical extravaganza kind of film produced and directed by Nasir Hussain, with the star cast of Joy Mukherjee, Asha Parekh, and the ever present comic relief Rajendra Nath, with Pran completing the square as the villian. And to top it all the music is of O. P. Nayyar, lyrics by Majrooh, we have a winner. Eight (?) songs from this film are already posted. This is again a picnic song, this time on the river bank. Asha Parekh is with the usual entourage of friends( I think Tabassum is one of them) and Joy Mukherjee is singing this song praising her style and beauty. All are in predominantly white attire, by some tacit consent, reminding me of a cricket match. Though cricket has lost its white attire and purity, and luster at least for me, these colourful old melodies are ever green and still fresh.
The first I remember seeing this song and others from this movie is in late eighties when cable T.V. was in full swing. I was familiar with the popular songs like the title song from this film. Our local cable operator used to play these Video cassettes of old songs which had some songs from ” Phir wohi dil laaya hoon” Though I remembered the songs of “Tere Ghar ke Saamne”, and a few more Dev Anand , S D. Burman songs, this one had slipped away from my mind. I was not even sure of the name of film. I some how managed to guess, if I was to find, it would be in this film. So one fine day I found it and promptly wrote down the lyrics and sent it to Atul ji. Guess Atul ji somehow mixed up the two songs I had sent and thought he had posted this song too 🙂 . No matter, better late than never. It is a very catchy composition and Rafi sahab has sung this with the right touch of playful teasing romance. The playback singer of hindi films are sometimes required to be better actors than the heroes on whom the song is picturized. They had to be the best mimics to sound very like actors on whom the song is picturized on screen. It is especially true of Rafi as his voice has made even non-actors/heroes look plausible while mouthing impossibly romantic songs. So here is the song, it is good enough to look at in eastman colour.

Song-Aji qibla mohtarma kabhi shola kabhi naghma (Phir Wohi Dil Laaya Hoon)(1963) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar
Lyrics
Aji qibla,
mohtarma,
kabhi shola,
kabhi naghma
iss aap ke andaaz ka,
haay kya kehna
aji qibla,
mohtarma,
kabhi shola,
kabhi naghma
iss aap ke andaaz ka,
haay kya kehna
aji qibla,
mohtarma,
kabhi shola,
kabhi naghma
uff yeh gussa
kaali aankhen ho rahi hain gulaabi,
aap ki to yeh adaa hai
aur kisi ki kharaabi
arre re re re
maine tumhe dekha,
sirf dekha
maaniye kehna
maine tumhe dekha,
sirf dekha
maaniye kehna
aji qibla,
mohtarma,
kabhi shola,
kabhi naghma
iss aap ke andaaz ka,
haay kya kehna
aji qibla,
mohtarma,
kabhi shola,
kabhi naghma
aarzoo thhi chand lamhe
yoonhi chalte phirte
betakalluf ho ke tum se
chand baaten karte
arre re re re re
tum jo haseen thhe
dil ne chaaha
saath hi rehna
aa aa aa
tum jo haseen thhe
dil ne chaaha
saath hi rehna
aji qibla,
mohtarma,
kabhi shola,
kabhi naghma
iss aap ke andaaz ka,
haay kya kehna
aji qibla,
mohtarma,
kabhi shola,
kabhi naghma

Congratulations on graduating, most deservedly in my opinion, from sending the lyrics to providing an article too. Writing down the lyrics is difficult and daunting, its really appreciable that you have provided so many lyrics to Atul. I hope to keep reading many such contributions from you.
You are spot on when you say that the singers were expected to be better ‘actors’ than the actors themselves. I could name thousands of songs where this is applicable. Love this song, its so catchy.
