Chal diye banda nawaaz

Posted on: March 24, 2012

I have discussed as many as six songs from “Mr and Mrs 55” (1955) and I was under the impression that all songs of the movie had been covered. But I was wrong of course. There are still at least a couple of songs from this movie yet to be discussed.

Here is one of those songs that I thought was already covered but I was wrong. This song is sung by Rafi and Geeta Dutt. It is picturised on Guru Dutt and Madhubala asa teasing song and it is somewhat reminiscent of Kishore Kumar and Madhubala in “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” in the sense that here Guru Dutt makes Madhubala push the car. It must be mentioned here though that “Mrs and Mrs 55” came three years prior to “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi”.

This song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by O P Nayyar.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nahm (long back) and she reminded me of this fact once again. unlikeike sarkaari departments in India, reminders do have an effect on me. :).

Song-Chal diye banda nawaaz (Mr And Mrs 55)(1955) Singers- Rafi, Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics(Provided by nahm)

chal diye banda nawaaz
chhed kar mere dil ka saaz
chal diye banda nawaaz
chhed kar mere dil ka saaz
ham taraste hee rahe
jalwe baraste hee rahe
suniye mister chaalbaaz
baniye na bade teerandaaz
suniye mister chaalbaaz
baniye na bade teerandaaz
aur koyi ghar dekhiye
dil ko yahaan mat phhenkiye
suniye mister chaalbaaz
baniye na bade teerandaaz

hai mujh mein tu banke dard-e-jigar
dil mein khatakti hai teri nazar
hai mujh mein tu banke dard-e-jigar
dil mein khatakti hai teri nazar
bas bas tumhi jaison ne ae janaab
kar daala ulfat ka khaana kharaab
bas bas tumhi jaison ne ae janaab
kar daala ulfat ka khaana kharaab

maan ja aye sangdil
dil se mila le mera dil
suniye mister chaalbaaz
baniye na bade teerandaaz
suniye mister chaalbaaz
baniye na bade teerandaaz
aur koyi ghar dekhiye
dil ko yahaan mat phhenkiye
suniye mister chaalbaaz
baniye na bade teerandaaz

daaman se khencho zara haath ko
samjho zara apni auqaat ko
daaman se khencho zara haath ko
samjho zara apni auqaat ko

auqaat meri na poochhein huzoor
hoon aapka mujh ko yeh hai guroor
auqaat meri na poochhein huzoor
hoon aapka mujh ko yeh hai guroor
yoon na rishta jodiye
daaman hamaara chhodiye

chal diye banda nawaaz
chhed kar mere dil ka saaz
chal diye banda nawaaz
chhed kar mere dil ka saaz
ham taraste hee rahe
jalwe baraste hee rahe
par
chal diye banda nawaaz
chhed kar mere dil ka saaz

maana ke bigde hain mere naseeb
ulfat na samjhe ameer-o-ghareeb
maana ke bigde hain mere naseeb
ulfat na samjhe ameer-o-ghareeb
chhodo yeh ulfat ki baareekiyaan
rasta lo jungle ka majnu miyaan
chhodo yeh ulfat ki baareekiyan
rasta lo jungle ka majnu miyaan

chhod kar ab tera dar
jaaye yeh deewaana kidhar
suniye mister chaalbaaz
baniye na bade teerandaaz
suniye mister chaalbaaz
baniye na bade teerandaaz
aur koyi ghar dekhiye
dil ko yahaan mat phenkiye

chal diye banda nawaaz
chhed kar mere dil ka saaz
chal diye banda nawaaz
chhed kar mere dil ka saaz
ham taraste hee rahe
jalwe baraste hee rahe
par
chal diye banda nawaaz
chhed kar mere dil ka saaz

This is the first time I am hearing this song since I saw the movie in 1955.
Amazing!! I was a lot younger then. Guru Dutt acted in a very few movies but he was among the best actors!! Geeta Bali ( became Dutt later) had a wonderful voice!!!

So you have heard the song again after 57 years ! That is amazing indeed.
You mean Geeta Roy became Geeta Dutt.

thank you Nahmji for sending first the lyrics and then the reminder. i ve seen all these movies when they all came on TV in the 70s and 80s. and anything for the one million expressions that cross Madhubala’s face with every word of the song.

Nahm ji,

Thanks for the melodious reminder, wonderful song. 🙂
Music from Guru Dutt’s films is always a pleasure to listen to.

Peevesie’s Mom ji,
Could not agree more with you as you write about the million expressions on Madhubala’s face. She had the capacity to convey so much emotions without really too much physical movement – with just a twitch of the corner of lips, or a blink of eyes, or even just a twinkling smile that would touch the eyes, without even getting to the lips. She is one actress who could do an entire song sitting at one place, but making do with so much emotional content in her facial expressions and tiny movements. Really a wonder. Check out the song “Mere Sapne Mein Aana Re Sajna” from the film ‘Raaj Hatth’ (1956).

The only other actress I can think of who can do the same, or even sometimes better, is Geeta Bali. Her perfromance, especially in the songs full of mischief and fun is a veritable treat to watch. Just sample “Chori Chori Meri Gail Aanaa Hai Bura” from the film ‘Jaal’ (1952) – what a performance it is, using just facial expressions, the smile, the eyes, and simple hand movements – such a treat.
