Yahaan main ajnabi hoon

Posted on: March 22, 2012

Here is a song that belongs to the category of “how come this song was not posted earlier”. My excuse remains the same standard one-I thought that this song was already discussed.

Better late than never. Here is this song from “Jab Jab Phool Khile” (1965). It is sung by Rafi and picturised on Shashi Kapoor. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Yahaan main ajnabi hoon (Jab Jab Phool Khile) (1965) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

kabhi pehle dekha nahin yeh samaa
yeh main bhool se aa gaya hoon kahaan
yahaan main ajnabi hoon
yahaan main ajnabi hoon
main jo hoon bas wohi hoon
main jo hoon bas wohi hoon
yahaan mein ajnabi hoon
yahaan mein ajnabi hoon

kahaan shaam-o-sehar yeh
kahaan din raat mere
bahut ruswa huye hain
yahaan jazbaat mere
nayi tehzeeb hai yeh
naya hai yeh zamaana
magar main aadmi hoon
wohi sadiyon puraana
main kya janoon yeh baaten
zara insaaf karna
meri gustaakhiyon ko
khudaara maaf karna
yahaan main ajnabi hoon
yahaan main ajnabi hoon

teri baahon mein dekhoon
sanam gairon ki baahen
main laoonga kahaan se
bhala aisee nigaahen
yeh koi raksh hoga
koi dastoor hoga
mujhe dastoor aisa
kahaan manzoor hoga
bhala kaise yeh mera
lahoo ho jaaye paani
main kaise bhool jaoon
main hoon Hindustani
yahaan main ajnabi hoon
yahaan main ajnabi hoon

mujhe bhi hai shikaayat
tujhe bhi to gilaa hai
yehi shikwe hamaari
mohabbat ka silaa hai
kabhi magrib se mashrik
mila hai jo milega
jahaan ka phool hai jo
wahin pe woh khilega
tere oonche mahal mein
nahin mera guzaara
mujhe yaad aa raha hai
woh chhota sa shikaara
yahaan main ajnabi hoon
yahaan main ajnabi hoon
main jo hoon bas wohi hoon
main jo hoon bas wohi hoon
yahaan main ajnabi hoon
yahaan main ajnabi hoon

Khyati ji,

This is one of my favourite’s rafi sad solos. I had sent the lyrics long back, but this song also seems to have got lost in transit :-).

The fifth line in 2nd stanza is :

yeh koi ‘ raqs ‘ hoga
koi dastoor hoga

“Raqs” means dance, as it can be seen in the video, Nanda is dancing with a friend.
Regards.

Nahmji,
Thanks for the correct word with right meaning. I did struggle just with that word in the whole song. My fav stanza is the 2nd one –
teri baahon mein dekhu…….
main kaise bhool jaoon, main hoon Hindustani.

BTW, Congratulations and thanks for finding 200 gems for all music lovers.

Thank you. I have seen the video again just now. Nanda is shown sitting on the piano through out the song. It must be just before the song, she dances with the friend. This song reminds me of another song from ‘Aankhen’ – gairon pe karam apnon pe sitam

Ghairon pe karam apnon pe sitam

Even though I do not like the sentiment of the song, complaining about his girl dancing with others as a serious blow to his izzat sounds silly, but I love the song.

I’m insurmountably reviving & adding to my knowledge some of the old classic pair of songs from different films, different years, that are sung by the SAME SINGER, similarly tuned by the same/different composers, AND — one lost in the soils of be-wilderness due to film failure & the other making itself in the list of huge hits. AND THE LOOSER ARE WE LISTENERS who have forgotten the ill – fated composition out of the two.

”Yahan main ajnabee hoon … ” is a super hit number from ”Jab Jab Phool Khile-1965” composed by Kalyanji Anandji & sung by Mohd. Rafi. The introductory couplet itself by Rafi in the beginning (कभी पहले देखा नहीं ये समां … ये मैं भूल से आ गया हूं कहाँ) , is sufficient enough to tear apart even the dead or the pithed heart to pieces.

Anand Baxi on many occasions have surprised me to my brim by penning down pure/shudh & beautifully sophisticated Devnaagri lyrics ( e.g. ”चाँद आहें भरेगा, फूल दिल थाम लेंगे … हुस्न की बात चली तो, सब तेरा नाम लेंगे” या फिर ”जिक्र होता है जब कयामत का तेरे जलवों की बात होती है” हो ) & on other occasions with heavy duty Urdu diction. The beautifully crafted Urdu words of this number fully support my later viewpoint about him. ….

Do you know that a similar number, also sung by Rafi Sahab, with nearly SIMILAR tune, & exactly similar situation of picturization, was composed by Datta Ram, 2 yrs earlier than ‘Yahan mein ajnabee hoon …’ in the film ” Jab se Tumhe Dekha Hai – 1963”. And the number was ”Hum aapki mehfil mein bhoole se chale aaye …” – that was lost from the scene in no time due to film failure at box office. One can listen to both these numbers & can only repent on Datta Ram’s sheer bad luck.
