Hamen yaad kabhi tum kar lena

Posted on: July 6, 2012

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The year is 1972, and Salil Da has completed two decades in the film industry. Making his debut with the 1953 Bimal Roy production, ‘Do Bigha Zameen’, he continues to be a fairly busy music director in the early 70s. Somewhat unassuming, somewhat low key, his creations continue to catch one’s ear as well as one’s fancy. During the 50s and 60s, he has made his mark with such films that have become memorable on account of his music – ‘Biraj Bahu’ (1954), ‘Jaagte Raho’ (1956), ‘Musaafir’ (1957), ‘Ek Gaon Ki Kahaani’ (1957), ‘Madhumati’ (1958), ‘Parakh’ (1960), ‘Chhaayaa’ (1961), ‘Kabuliwaala’ (1961), ‘Half Ticket’ (1962), ‘Poonam Ki Raat’ (1965) etc. The seventies have emerged and Salil Da already has films like ‘Anand’ (1971) and ‘Mere Apne’ (1971) under his belt. In 1972, his melodies from ‘Annadaata’ are making waves on the radio. In 1972, Salil Da will also compose for two more films that did not get retained on the memory cards of the listening public. One is ‘Sabse Bada Sukh’ that has two wonderful songs. And the second is an even more obscure film, ‘Anokha Daan’, which carried as many as five superb melodies.

The film has already made a debut on this blog, and the lovely song of nature by Lata, “Madbhari Ye Hawaayen. . .” is already posted. This here is the second song from this film to be posted here. In contrast to the light and happy song posted earlier, this is a sad song of parting, that is picturized on the same pair of Zahira and Anil Dhawan. A very stern looking Nadira also makes a brief appearance in the video clip.

The film is produced by LB Thakur under the banner of LB Thakur Productions, Bombay, and is directed by Asit Sen. The songs of this film are penned by Yogesh, (with the exception of the earlier posted song that is the sole song contributed in this film, by Gulzar.). The star cast includes Zahira, Anil Dhawan, Rakesh Pandey, Kabir Bedi, Archana, Nadira, Mukri, Anwar Hussain, Brahm Bhardwaj, Rashid Khan, Dev Kishen, Paul Mahendra, Poornima, Tarun Bose, Vishwa Mehra, Padma Khanna etc.

The song, its words and the melody are a lovely listening experience. The lines convey a strong emotion of an impending separation – there is sadness and regret in the words that really get to the heart. Picturization on the other hand, leaves somewhat to be desired – probably another of those songs that are better heard than viewed. But oh, what a lovely song to listen to. I have not seen the film, and would request other knowledgeable readers to please add more information about the film and this song.

hamen yaad kabhi tum kar lenaa
jab rotaa huaa saawan aaye
ho bahaar, aur raah mein koi phool haaye murjhaaye

Maybe someday, sometime
You will think of me
Maybe on a rainy day
When the clouds seem to weep
Or in spring
If you see a withered flower by the wayside

veeraan safar mein jeevan ke
kab tak yun akele chalte piyaa
le kar hum ye aakhir tere binaa
aas ka bujhtaa sa diyaa

On the desolate forlorn journey of this life
O for how long was it possible
To travel alone
Without you
Carrying the flickering, dying lamp of hope

detey hain duaa phir bhi tum ko
khushiyon ki umar lag jaaye tumhen
jo bhi tum ko gham ho
saare badle mein yahaan mil jaayen hamen

I wish you well
And pray for a life time of happiness for you
And that your sorrows may, in turn
All come to me instead
