Mere haathon mein lage to rang laay

Posted on: November 25, 2011

“Tumhaare Liye” (1978) is a recent movie by the standards of this blog, and it came at a time when I was fully awrae and alive to the Hindi movies that were being released those days. But I was not much aware of this movie. So it shows that this movie was one of those boring art movies that most movie goers would not touch with a barge pole.

I was not aware of the songs of this movie either.

Contributors to this blog are clearly more aware of movies like this, though. Here is a song from this movie whose lyrics are sent to me by Mrs Bhatt. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Since this movie had Sanjeev Kumar and Vidya Sinha in lead roles so one can safely assume that this song was picturised on Vidya Sinha.

Naqsh Llayalpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Jaidev.

The song may be obscure for me, but it is obvious that a song like this deserves to be much better known among music lovers.

Song-Mere haathon mein lage to rang laay(Tumhaare Liye) (1978) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Naqsh Llayalpuri, MD-Jaidev

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

mere haathon mein lage to rang laay
mehndi tere naam ki
mere haathon mein lage to rang laay
mehndi tere naam ki
piya maange re
piya maange re mange re meri maang
laali tose shyam ki

gori nadiya ka gora badan jhoome
tujhe dekhe to thhandi pawan jhoome
gori nadiya ka gora badan jhoome
tujhe dekhe to thhandi pawan jhoome
choodi khanke jaise koi geet milan ka gaaye
chanchal karti paayal tujhko apne paas bulaaye
maange maange
piya maange re maange re meri maang
laali tose shyam ki
mere haathon mein lage to rang laay
mehndi tere naam ki

aaa aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa aaa aaa
aaa aaa aaa aaa
jaane kabse main dekhoon yahi sapna
rahoon banke dulhaniya tere angna
jaane kabse main dekhu yahi sapna
rahoon banke dulhaniya tere angna
mere tan ki daali
teri baahon mein khil jaaye
jhoom uthe maathe ki bindiya
tu jo ang lagaye
maange maange
piya maange re maange re meri maang
laali tose shyam ki
mere haathon mein lage to rang laay
mehndi tere naam ki
mehndi tere naam ki
mehndi tere naam ki

Thank you for the nice song,
In fact, I thought that, another more popular(by the standards of broadcastings by vividhbharth radio station) and iconic song from this movie sung by lataji ,was already included in the blog. But it is yet to be included.

“Tumhein dekhthi hoon tho lagthaa hai aise, ke jaise yugon se tumhein jaanthi hoon, agar tum ho saagar, main pyaasi nadi hoon, agar tum ho saawan main jal ki kali hoon, piyaa tum ho saagar”(great lyrics, great composition, great singing but not imaginatively picturised)(picturised on vidyasinha and sanjeevkumar-in a outfit of sage)

The producer of this movie Raj tilak is a favourite of Sanjeev kumar. He produced and directed 3 sanjeev kumar movies including this
MUKTHI(famous for lalla lalla lori and suhaani chaandni raathenin hamein sone nahin deti-starring shashikapoor, vidya sinha, Bindiya goswami superb music by :r.d.burman-1977)
Chehre pe chehra(1981)(with rekha)(sanjeev ji ina a role where he turns different person at night and kills ladies or people he dislikes- I am unable to remember exactly)
36 ghante 1974(with sunil dutt, raj kumar, mala sinha)
Atulji,

aaj ki farmaaish ho gayee,

Atul ji,
TUMHARE LIYE-1978 was a film by Director Basu Chatterjee.
Basu da had given us films built around the middle class problems. He gave us very entertaining films like,Rajnigandha,Chitchor,Chhotisi Baat,Khatta Meetha,Swami,Sara Akash etc.Unfortunately,he tried his hand at something different in Tumhare Liye and it was a hugh let down from him.
The story itself was so ordinary that despite leading stars of the day or Jaidev’s music could not help much and it was a big flop.
The story is of 2 births.Prakash (SK) loves Gauri(VS) but has to marry Renuka(Neelam Mehra),ofcourse after Gauri gets pregnant from him.Gauri becomes ill and is hospitalised, where she learns that in last birth also, she as Gauri loved Gangadhar(SK) and Kalavati(NM) marries him.In last birth,Gauri dies, her child dies and later Gangadhar too dies.It is all due to a curse on Sanjiv’s family.
In this birth too same situation occurs, but now Renuka( Kalavati) wants to kill her,but before that happens Gauri sacrifices and after the child birth she destroys herself to save Sanjiv kumar.
Such type of bakwas stories were not Basu da’s forte and throughout the film it shows.
There were big stars, reasonably good music, but the film flopped.

Thank you Atulji for posting this song and Prakashji for providing the details. Yes I also Had seen this movie on Doordarshan and didn’t like the story at all. But these two songs are amazing. The voice (Ashaji) and the music (Jaidev) are very powerful. As Prakashji has mentioned, the other song by Lataji is also the only highlight of this movie.
