Raat hai nikhhri huyi

Posted on: February 10, 2012

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I just stumbled upon a beautiful duet ‘raat hai nikhri huyi’ sung by Krishna Goyal and Geeta Dutt from the film MALLIKAA (1956) under the music direction of the great Hansraj Bahl. Tanveer Naqvi is the lyricist.

I had never heard this song or the name of the film. I browsed through various websites relating to Hindi film songs to get some more details about the film but came out almost empty handed except that Gemini Ganesan was one of the actors in this film. This brings out the possibility of this film being a remake of a film from South.

When I listened to this song for the first time, it gave me an impression of a non-filmy song. After listening it again and again to jot down the lyrics, I realised that this song was different even by the standards of the golden era. The voice of Krishna Goyal is a refreshing one in the midst of the familiar voices of that period – Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Mukesh and Kishore Kumar. Even Geeta Dutt’s rendition is a mesmerising one. Krishna Goyal’s voice appears to be a blend of Talat and C H Atma.

This song would be one more addition to my MP3 collections which I will carry in my next Himalayan treks. It will indeed be an awesome experience to listen to this song in the unearthly silence of a night in a high altitude camp surrounded by snow clad Himalayan peaks under star-stubbed blue sky.

Only the audio clip is available of this song. So it is difficult to guess as to on whom the song was picturised.

Lyrics

raat hai nikhri huyi
neend hai bikhri huyi
husn hai jaagaa huaa
aye mere dil gaaye jaa
gaaye jaa
aa aa
gaaye jaa
raat hai nikhri huyi
neend hai bikhri huyi
husn hai jaagaa huaa
aye mere dil gaaye jaa
gaaye jaa
aa aa
gaaye jaa

aap ki pehli nazar
le gayi dil chheen kar
dil chheen kar
aap ki pehli nazar
le gayi dil chheen kar
dil chin kar
apni nazar ye kasam
apni nazar ye kasam
kuchh nahin humko khabar

aap to hain dilruba
aap hi jaane bhala
dil ke sitam kyaa huaa
aye mere dil gaaye jaa
gaaye jaa
aa aa
gaaye jaa

chhod ke saaraa jahaan
tumse hai dil meharbaan
dil meharbaan
chhod ke saaraa jahaan
tumse hai dil meharbaan
dil meharbaan

shukriyaa mere huzoor
shukriyaa mere huzoor
aap kahaan main kahaan

pyaar mere sochtaa
kyaa hai bhalaa khyaa bhuraa
jo huaa achha huaa
aye mere dil gaaye jaa
gaaye jaa
aa aa
gaaye jaa

raat hai nikhri huyi
neend hai bikhri huyi
husn hai jaagaa huaa
aye mere dil gaaye jaa
gaaye jaa
aa aa
gaaye jaa
aa aa
gaaye jaa

Kamath ji,
MALIKAA was a 1956 film, produced by Thakur Ranbir Singh under the banner of S.B.Films and directed by Majnu-whose real name was Harold lewis. This Majnu was acting as a comedian and is seen in many films along with I.S.Johar,e.g. Ek thi Ladki,Hum sab chor hai etc.He has directed many films.
The cast included Mahipal,Shakila,Chandrashekhar,Omprakash.sunder,Kumkum,Ramesh Thakur etc.The MD was Hansraj Behl, ably assisted by Inder Goyal. It was not a remake of any southern film, but an independent film made in Bombay.

Thanks for the details of the film which were not available on any websites as far as I know.
I find from the IMD website that the film was released in 1957.

Kamath ji,
IMDB site is notoriously famous for giving wrong info more often than not.I,for one, would not depend on its any info.
Though many people refer this site, they are selective, choosy and careful when it comes to important matters. For routine things it is ok.

as per HFGK :
the lyricist of this song is ASAD BHOPALI,(not Tanvir Naqvi, as mentioned in the post )
