Raat abhi baaqi hai baat abhi baaqi hai

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Another wonderful song, actually a qawwaali, that I discovered recently to be composed by Usha Khanna. The singer of this qawwaali is Jaani Baabu Qawwaal. When I had heard this qawwaali many year ago, and associating the name of Jaani Baabu with it, I had presumed this to be non-film offering, since Jaani Baabu is a professional mainstream qawwaali singer. Only recently, as I was selecting songs composed by Usha Khanna, for posting on this blog, I came across once again this wonderful qawwaali on YouTube, and then realized that it is actually from the film Do Khilaadi (1976).

As I tracked more information about this film, I find that it is one more offering from the production house of Jugal Productions, Bombay, and is produced and directed by Jugal Kishore. The leading star cast of this film includes Vinod Mehra, Zahira, Jaishree T, Paintal, Indrani Mukherjee, Anita Guha, Mohan Sherry, Shetty, Jugal Kishore, Naaz, Jezebel, Jaani Babu, Hercules, Kumud Tripathi, Uma Khosla, Ratna, Brijendra Mohan, Baby Anuradha, Uttam Sodi, Ram Mohan, Gurbachan Singh, Gauri Verma, TunTun, and Omi Chopra etc. The lyrics of this film are written by Asad Bhopali and Gauhar Kanpuri. This particular qawwaali is penned by Gauhar Kanpuri. The music composition is by Usha Khanna, and the singing voice is that of Jaani Babu and his party.

The film is a typical dacoit saga, with sub plots that include betrayal amongst friends, kidnapped children, romantic tie ups between children of sworn enemies etc. Jagga (Jugal Kishore) and Kundan (Mohan Sherry) are two dacoit partners. Jagga’s wife (Indrani Mukherjee) warns him about Kundan but Jagga doesn’t pay heed. Once when Jagga and Kundan loot a temple they are chased by police. Jagga is injured and he tells Kundan to take the loot away and escape. He also tells Kundan to take care of his wife and child. Kundan escapes, and the expected betrayal between friends happens. Kundan keeps all the loot, and does not give a share to Jagga’s family, or even takes care of them. He gets married (to Anita Guha) and lives a wealthy luxurious life. Jagga completes his prison sentence and is released from jail. He comes to meet Kundan and realizes that he has been cheated. In a fit of vengeful anger, he kidnaps Kundan’s son, Shiva, and then starts to blackmails Kundan under an assumed name. But he does not return the child.

Jagga brings up Shiva lovingly. Jagga’s own son Saawan (Vinod Mehra) and Jagga’s wife live a life of penury and discomfort. Saawan meets Barkha (Zahira), Kundan’s daughter and they fall in love. Negotiating through more storyline and episodes, the true relationships are finally sorted out and revealed. Both families finally come together, when Kundan realizes that Shiva, who is raised by Jagga, is actually his own son. He also finds out about Saawan and Barkha, and that Saawan is Jagga’s son. In the end, he asks for forgiveness from Jagga, and everybody is happy ever after.

This qawwaali is presented on screen after Kundan has married and settled down as a family man. He is celebrating a family event (presumably the birthday of his son, Shiva) and this qawwaali is arranged as part of this celebration. On screen, this qawwaali is performed by Jaani Baabu himself, accompanied by a dance performance by Jaishree TNaaz. Other actors in the video clip are Mohan Sherry in a suit and tie, and Anita Guha, who are the hosts for this gathering. A bearded Jugal Kishore makes an entrance through the bedroom window, while the qawwaali is in progress in the front lawns of Kundan’s house, with the intent of kidnapping the Kundan’s son.

The lyrics of the qawwaali are an entreaty from a lover to his beloved, to stay, and not leave, as the night is still not over, and there are still many things that he wants to say to her. The lover is trying to convince her in many ways, and is also imploring her in the name of many entities, so that she should change her mind and stay for some more time. The presentation is really wonderful, both in terms of the singing voice, and the on screen performance, as it is coming from a professional qawwaali singer. Enjoy is entertaining piece of music, from the baton of Usha Khanna.

mere mehboob
aaj ki raat na jaa, raat abhi baaqi hai
maan le baat na jaa, baat abhi baaqi hai

O my beloved
The night is still young, I implore you do not leave yet
Please grant me this request, as there still are many things I have to say

dekh ye raat haseen, roz toh aati nahin
ye jawaani ki ghadi, beet na jaaye kahin

The night is lovely and enchanting, a night like this does not come often
Let us not squander away these moments of youthful passion

ye suhaanaa hai samaa, tu haseen hai mein jawaan
waqt gar beet gayaa, mein kahaan aur tu kahaan

The ambience is so sweet and endearing,
You and I are both young and carry passions within
If these moments are gone, then who knows which paths we will be trekking tomorow

kisne dekhi hai ye kal, kal ke waadon se nikal
kal to aane ki nahin, hum se ye chaal na chal
teri aur meri mulaqaat abhi baaqi hai

Don’t talk of tomorrow, don’t talk of future
Rescue yourself from these mistaken promises of tomorrow
The day of tomorrow is never here, so try not to play this deception on me
A lot remains to still happen in this exciting encounter (of ours)

mera armaan hai tu, mera imaan hai tu
jaan kar haal mera, phir bhi anjaan hai tu

You the fire in my desires
You are the truth in my integrity
Being aware of my state of mind, why do you feign to be unaware

kuchh nahin tujhko khabar, kaise hoti hai guzar
tujh pe hota hi nahin, meri baaton ka asar

But alas, you appear to be unaware of how I pass the moments (away from you)
My entreaties do not seem to have an effect on you

dil agar dil se miley, pyaar kaa phool khile
hum koi gair nahin, chhod ye shikwe giley
zulfon ko khol de, barsaat abhi baaqi hai

Let the two hearts meet
Let our love blossom
We are strangers no longer, give up these doubts, this dissent
Let loose your tresses, let them be free
There is rainfall still waiting to happen

chaand taaron ki qasam, gham ke maaron ki qasam
beqaraari na badhaa, beqaraaron ki qasam

I implore you in the name of the moon and stars
And I implore you in the name of sorrowful destitutes of love
I implore you in the name of those who are restless, please do not feed the fires of my restlessness

khaadkaaron (??) ki qasam, naalah-zaaron ki qasam
tu ne tthukraayaa jinhen, un bechaaron ki qasam
(??)

I implore you in the name of those who lament in love
I implore you in the name of unaided vulnerable souls whom you have rejected
(NOTE: naalah = lament, naalah-zaar = weaklings who lament)

in bahaaron ki qasam, in nazzaaron ki qasam
pyaar badnaam na kar, tujh ko pyaaron ki qasam

I implore you in the name of the lovely spring
I implore you in the name of the panorama that waits expectedly
Let not the name of love be tainted
I implore you in the name of all lovers that have ever been

besahaaron ki qasam, tinka-naaron ki qasam
meri bhi pyaas bhujaa, pyaase dhaaron ki qasam

I implore you in the name of those who are helpless
I implore you in the name of those who would burn even the last supporting straw
I implore you to quench my yearnings
I implore you in the name of flowing waves that are yet thirsty
(NOTE: tinkaa = straw, as in ‘tinkey ka sahaaraa’ – hanging by a straw; naar = fire; tinkaa-naar = one who would burn even the last straw they hang from)

raazdaaron ki qasam, hoshiyaaron ki qasam
tu ne na samjhaa jinhen, un ishaaron ki qasam
mere armaanon ki, baraat abhi baaqi hai

I implore you in the name of those who know this secret (of love)
And implore you in the name of those who understand it (this secret)
I implore you in the name of indications that you have chosen to ignore
Please stay and behold
The pageant of my longings is still to be
