Che khush nazaare che khush nazaare

Posted on: September 5, 2011

“Pyaar Ka Mausam” (1969) is a movie which was released during my pre teen years. I never saw the movie because my elders were of the type who rationalised that movies was bad for kids. And as a result I spent much of my childhood deprived of Hindi movies.

Of course no one could deny you the music of movies. Unlike movies, the music of these movies blared from all available audio dispensing units, viz radios, loudspeakers etc and I had my generous share of the music of Hindi movies.

I recall that the music of “Pyaar ka mausam” (1969) was a huge hit. The title song Ni Sultana re pyaar ka mausam aaya was a song that I loved. It is one of the most memorable songs of my formative years as far as I am concerned. I was not aware at that time, but the song Tum bin jaaun kahaan was also from this movie.

Here is another song from this movie. I vaguely remember having listened to this song those days, but the song did not make as much impression on me as the title song of the movie. One reason could be that I could not undesrand the lyrics of this song. It was not that I understood the meaning of “Ni Sultana”, but that song was far too catchy for me to bother with such minor abberations.

Here is this song “Che khush nazaare” from this movie. What exactly does this phrase mean ? I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us ther meanning to this phrase so that we less knowledgeable ones can appreciate this song better.

This song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Asha Parekh. Shashi Kapoor wielding a guitar is somehow not the same as Shammi Kapoor wilding the same musical instrument, but in this song it did not matter. The songs of the movie carried the movie on its figurative shoulders.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and music is composed by R D Burman. When I was loving the songs of this movie, I was not aware who the music director of this movie was. In fact at that time I was not even aware of the concept of a music director. I thought that the singer arranged for the music etc as well. 😀

It was music like that of “Pyaar Ka Mausam” that paved the way for R D Burman to annex the throne of the top music director of Hindi movies and in the process who shook up the established music set up of Hindi movies. Most old timers found their career getting over by the turn of the 1970s and those who survived would try to create R d Burman kind of music in their music.

R D Burman’s influence those days could only be appreciated by those who lived through that era. people who did not live through that era and who try to disprove his dominatio through cold statistical analysis do not know what they are talking about.

This song incidentally is the 200th song of R D Burman as a music director in this blog. He was THE music director that I loved to listen to in my formative days, just as I loved to listen to Kishore Kumar as the male playback singer those days. One finds that both R D Burman and Kishore Kumar do not dominate this blog as befit their influence on my generation at that time. The reason is, now I have “matured” (?) and I have learnt to appreciate the music of the earlier decades too. At the moment, I am concentrating more on the music of earlier decades prior to the emergence of R D Burman (and Kishore Kumar). I am saving the discussion on the music of 1970s for later. But that does not alter the fact that R D Burman (and Kishore Kumar) dominated their fields in 1970s.

Here is this song, which is the 200th song of R D Burman as a music director in this blog.

chekhush nazaare
chekhush nazaare
ke khud pukaare
hain yaar ki manzil
chekhush nazaare
chekhush nazaare

hain yaar ki manzil

gulon ki waadi
sabaa ki basti
gali bahaaron ki
gulon ki waadi
sabaa ki basti
gali bahaaron ki
nigaah ko thhi talaash kab se
inhin nazaaron ki
ki bekhudi mein nikal padaa hoon
uthaa ke saaz-e-dil ho
chekhush nazaare
chekhush nazaare
ke khud pukaare
hain yaar ki manzil
chekhush nazaare
chekhush nazaare
ke khud pukaare
hain yaar ki manzil

ye wo mahal hai
har ek dareechaa
hai aasmaan jiskaa
ye wo mahal hai
har ek dareechaa
hai aasmaan jiskaa
hai apne sar se
bhi kuchh bulandi
pe aastaan jiskaa
ye hai wo chilman
ke jiske peechhe
hai wo haseen qaatil
ho
chekhush nazaare
chekhush nazaare
ke khud pukaare
hain yaar ki manzil
chekhush nazaare
chekhush nazaare
ke khud pukaare
hain yaar ki manzil

“Che khush nazaare”
‘Che khush’ is a persian term. ‘Che’ is used for ‘kya’, kitna or kaisa, as far as i can make out. “kitna khush karne waale nazaare hain ” or “what a happy occassion/scene is this !”

The missing word is :
hai apne sar se
bhi kuchh bulandi
pe ‘aastaan’ jiskaa

“Aastan’ would be doorway or entrance to a holy place, or in this case the “entry way of the villa” . The poet is giving a higher status to the domain of the beloved.

Rahul dev burmanji also acted in the movie(in a comic role like he has done in Bhoot Bangla),If my memory serves me right.

Whether R.D.burman is one of the two men with caps on their head(other may be Rajendra nath or Birbal by their body language)(whose face clearly not visible in the picturisation of the song)who are preventing Asha parekh from going out of the palatial house?????.
As I have watched the movie long back, I am not able to confirm the identity of PANCHAM in the film correctly.

Further the main female dancer with Shashi kapoor must be SUJATHA

Bhoot bangla was produced by Mehmood.Mehmood was the main hero of the film and Tanuja was heroine.

Sir
you are right,

But Rahul dev burman enacted a comedy role in
movie BHOOT BUNGLA
and sung a song also, besides enacting it on screen alongwith Mehmood(lyrics of that song:
“Main bhookha hoon tujhe khaaoonga…bhoot bangla”
playback singing by mehmood, r.d.burman and suresh)(Music direction by Rahul Dev burman, song writer: Hasrat Jaipuri)

Majrooh Sultanpuri was known for popular songs penned by him all music directors. His similes, metaphors were often obscure for many music lovers. He used junli, chekhush, nisultana etc. words in his lyrics which are not clear in meanings. I found his songs musically enjoyable but difficult to understand language wise
