Mad bhari ye hawaayen

Posted on: September 22, 2011

“Anokha Daan” (1972) is a movie I knew little about even though this movie was released during my pre teen/teen years when I was at my curious best. So this movie must have been forgotten just as soon as it was released.

I became aawre of this movie thanks to the lyrics of this song which were sent to me by Prakashchandra. From the details sent by him, I now know that this movie was produced by L B Thakur and director is Asit Sen (not the comedian, but a producer of the same name). The movie was obviously a low budget movie which signed up unheard of newcomers (for free, I am sure). Yes, this movie had names like Archana,Rakesh pandey,Anil Dhawan, Zaheera, Kabir Bedi, Mukri, Padma khanna, Tarun Bose, Nadira, Anwar Hussain etc.

When I listened to this song, I realised that I had heard this song before, though I did not give much thought to the song at that time. Now, when I heard this song closely, I realised that it is a nice song to listen to.

Here is this song from “Anokha Daan” (1972). The song is sung by Lata and it is picturised as a beach song in Bombay. The voice of Lata, lyrics of Gulzar and music of Salil Chaudhary combine to create a wonderful magic. It is a fantastic song to listen to and this song in fact is so reminiscent of a few other Salil Chaudhary compositions that came up a few years late in “Rajnigandha” and “Chhoti Si Baat”.

The song is picturised on Zaahira, with Anil Dhawan and Dev Kishan also visible in the picturisation. What a wonderful song to listen to! This is a song that deserved a better movie than the one it ended up with.

Translation of this song has now been provided by Sudhir ji, so one can appreciate the lyrics of this song that much more.

Song-Mad bhari ye hawaayen (Anokha Daan) (1972) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-Salil Chaudhary

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

madbhari
ye hawaayen
madbhari
ye hawaaayen paas aaye
naam lekar,
mujhko ye bulaayen
madbhari
ye hawaayein paas aaye
naam lekar,
mujhko ye bulaayen
madbhari
ye hawaayen

maine raaton se kar lee dosti
taaron ke liye
aur churaake liya maine ye dil
bahaaron ke liye
maine raaton se kar lee dosti
taaron ke liye
aur churaake liya maine ye dil
bahaaron ke liye
hai zameen aasmaan
mujhko do duaayein
madbhari
ye hawaayen
paas aaye,
naam lekar
mujhko ye bulaayen
madbhari ye hawaayen

maine lehron ki baanhen thaamkar
dhoondhe hain bhanwar
saahilon pe kisi ajanabi ki
talaashi hai dagar
maine lehron ki baanhen thaamkar
dhoonde hain bhanwar
saahilon pe kisi ajnabi ki
talaashi hai dagar
kaash lekar usse lehren laut aayen
madbhari ye hawaayen

mera aanchal pakadke pyaar se
kehti hai hawaa
chal jidhar main chaloon
jaa milega unhi se raastaa
mera aanchal pakadke pyaar se
kehti hai hawaa
chal jidhar main chaloon
jaa milega unhi se raastaa
jinki manzil milein
unse jod raahen
madbhari
ye hawaaayen paas aayen
naam lekar,
mujhko ye bulaayen
madbhari
ye hawaayen

madbhari ye hawaayen, paas aayen
naam le kar, mujhko ye bulaayen

This heady breeze
Invoking a lightness in me
Brushes past me
Calls me by my name
Beckons me closer

main ne raaton se kar li dosti, taaron ke liye
aur churaa ke liyaa mein ne ye din bahaaron ke liye
ae zameen aasmaan mujh ko do duyaaen

I nurtured a casual intimacy
With the essence of night
To reach the stars
And I pilfered this day
For when spring would be here
Thank me, bless me
O the earth and sky
Thank me for this

main ne lehron ki baahen thaam kar dhoonde hain bhanwar
saahilon pe kisi ajnabee ki talaashi hai dagar
kaash le kar usey lehren laut aayen

I grasped the wake of waves
To explore the eddies and whirlpools
And searched for the footprints
Of an unknown stranger
In the sands on the shores
Oh I wish, the waves
They would bring him back with them

mera aanchal pakad ke pyaar se kehti hai hawaa
chal jidhar mein chaloon jaa milegaa unhi se raastaa
jin se manzil miley un se jod raahen

The impish winds tug at my garments
And lovingly whispers in my ears
Come, follow me, it says
I will take you to the paths he traverses
And come, trace with me
The paths
That will connect
To those paths
That lead to the destination

Arun ji, Prakash ji, Atul ji,

An interesting anecdote regarding the Asit Sen director and Asit Sen comedian. In an interview which I read long back, Asit Set the comedian, was asked whether sharing the same name with Asit Sen the director created any issues for him. To which Asit Sen replied, yes it does sometimes, especially being in the same industry. So I always suggest people to use a qualifier when referring to either of us. The director babu is “Chotey Asit Sen” and I, the comedian, am “Motey Asit Sen”.
(Asit Sen, the director, was a short and a petite person).

Prakash ji, Atul ji,

What a lovely post, and what an endearing song. I have not seen the film, but I have heard the songs and they are simply superb. Salil Da created the tunes at utmost leisure.

Two more great songs from this film are
– Hamen Yaad Kabhi Tum Kar Lena, Jab Rota Hua Saawan Aaye (Lata Mangeshkar)
– Hamraahi, Manzil Ke, Aao Chalen Mil Le Hum Aaj Saare (Kishore Kumar)

I liked very much the word “MADBHARI”.
Salilda used the same word “MADBHARI” in his another masterpiece creation:
“Na jaane kyon, hota hai iss zindagi ke saath……
….kahaan gaayee shaam-e-MADBHARI, woh mere, mere woh din gaye kidhar?”
(from Chhoti Si Baat-song has been written by I think Yogesh-
Basu chatterjee directed that film starring vidya sinha, Amol palekar)
