Ha tauba ye adaayen dekhe se khumaar aaye

on:Just as pet songs are few and far between in Hindi movies, much to my disappointment, swimming pool songs with bikini clad ladies are also very few in Hindi movies, much to the disappointment of a large number of movie watchers.
I remember that we used to have lots of movie songs related discussion in the cricket forum where Raja and I were (still are) members. Another Hindi song enthusiast there, called Ravi, gave me a big list of lots of Hindi songs to post when he came to know about this song blog. So he was one of the original farmaish giver to me. He had the kind of sense of humour that I miss a lot. He would write great reviews of Hindi movies and I also remember him writing an open letter to Saurav Ganguly which had us going ROFL for a long time thereafter.
Ravi, during our online movie related discussions wondered if Hindi movie actresses were ever picturised in bikini. He fondly hoped to see his favourite actress Asha Parekh in bikini but lamented that his fond wish may never get fulfilled before Asha jee never donned a bikini in his movies. I informed him that Asha jee may not have donned a bikini, but he could find Sharmila Tagore in such a dress. One lady member then told Ravi that Asha jee was known among her friends’ circle as one whose waist was “kamar nahin kamra hai”.
Those were the days when waering swimsuits was considered “bold” in Hindi movies and was regarded as “exposing”. Many actresses continued to give quotable quotes in their interviews till 1990s and beyound that they will not “expose” (read will not wear swimsuits) in movies. The fact that Indian women’s dresses like Sari and Salwar Kurta stress on covering the legs means any dresses showing legs were regarded as “exposing” and “revealing”. Going by that yardstick, Indian women desirous of participating in most sports were required to “expose” and “reveal”.
Interestingly enough, exposure of midriff which takes place while wearing a sari is considered acceptable in India, while that is not the case elsewhere. So the moral of the story is, whatever one is used to seeing around him/her become acceptable in that society. Women being what they are (“log kya kahenge” kind of thinking), they ensure that the body part exposed to public view is well maintained. In west, it the legs, in India, it is the midriff, or may be not.
Imagine a long discussion on Indian garment like sari in a write up where no one is wearing them. Yes, the song under discussion is a swimming pool song. Women in their swimsuits are seen diving into the swimming pool. They include Anjana too (then Anjana Manjrekar, now Anjana Mumtaz), but not before Joy Mukherji subjects her to this teasing song. Anjana is rightfully indignant, of course.
The song is sung by Rafi. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)
ha tauba yeh adaayen
dekhe se khumaar aaye
arey gora tan aisa
dil waalon ko pyaar aaye
na yoon dekho
jaan-e-jaanaan
lipat jaaye ga koyi deewaana
ho tauba yeh adaayen
dekhe se khumaar aaye
arey gora tan aisa
dil waalon ko pyaar aaye
na yoon dekho
jaan-e-jaanaan
lipat jaayega koyi deewaana
yeh rangeen badan
dekho sitam dhaaye na kahin
arey dil dhadke mera
lehron mein lehra ke dolo nahin
aa aa aa
yeh rangeen badan
dekho sitam dhaaye na kahin
arey dil dhadke mera
lehron mein lehra ke dolo nahin
darta hoo main
shola hai tu
aag paani mein lag jaaye na
haaye
tauba yeh adaayen
dekhe se khumaar aaye
arey gora tan aisa
dil waalon ko pyaar aaye
na yun dekho
jaan-e-jaanaan
lipat jaayega koyi deewaana
ae socho zara
koyi tera choome hai qadam
haaye zid na karo
jeene do auron ko bhi ae sanam
ho o o
ae socho zara
koyi tera choome hai qadam
haaye zid na karo
jeene do auron ko bhi ae sanam
chhoo kar tujhe meri tarah
saans mausam ki ruk jaaye na
ho o o
tauba yeh adaayen
dekhe se khumaar aaye
arey gora tan aisa
dil waalon ko pyaar aaye
na yoon dekho
jaan-e-jaanaan
lipat jaayega koyi deewaana
hai tan man mera uljha huaa
ulfon mein teri
arey sun o bewafa baanhon mein le le yeh baanhen meri
haaye
hai tan man mera uljha huaa
zulfon mein teri
arey sun o bewafa baanhon mein le le yeh baanhen meri
aa aa bhi ja
warna kahin
doob kar koyi
reh jaaye na
haaye
tauba yeh adaayen
dekhe se khumaar aaye
arey gora tan aisa
dil waalon ko pyaar aaye
na yun dekho
jaan-e-jaanaan
lipat jaayega koyi deewaana
tauba yeh adaayen
dekhe se khumaar aaye
arey gora tan aisa
dil waalon ko pyaar aaye
na yoon dekho
jaan-e-jaanaan
lipat jaayega koyi deewaana

A lively song, with the usual spirited singing by the great Mohammad Rafi. Alas, marred by such insipid picturisation.
