“Zameendaar” (1942) is a movie that was produced far far back in time. One can notice that this movie was produced in the year when Indians passed the Quit India resolution against their British rulers. Yes, this movie goes that far back in Indian history.
This movie , which was produced by Dalsukh Pancholi, a big movie producer of the time, was a blockbuster. This movie had Shanta Apte,S D Narang,Manorama, M Esmail, Ghulam Mohammad etc in it.
Here is a song from this movie that was a big rage those days, we are told.
Only the audio of this song is avialable, so one can only imagine how the song was picturised. The music and the lyrics paint a vivid picture of Shanta Apte seated on a bullock cart and driving it on the village roads. I would love to watch the picturisation of this song, if I could get hold of the video of this song.
Here is this superb song from “Zameendaar” (1942), sung by Shanta Apte, one of the great actor-singer of the earlier days of Hindi movies. I became a huge fan of her when I found her singing an English song with impeccable accent(In the world’s broad field of battle ) in “Duniya Na Maane” (1937).

Atul ji,
Lovely song, hearing it for the first time. You said it right, just listening to the sing paints such a vivid scene of a village, the farms, the bullock cart, the rehat and wells; very rustic and very endearing.
Some corrections to the lyrics;
1. the following lines
“hain bail saanwre sundar chhapanaar
khat-khat khat-khat khat-khat chaltaa
hain bail saanwre sundar chhapanaar
khat-khat khat-khat khat-khat chaltaa
saadaa-saadaa pyaaraa-pyaaraa”
with corrections are
“hain bail saanwre sundar chhakdaa
khat-khat khat-khat khat-khat chaltaa
bail saanwre sundar chhapanaar
khat-khat khat-khat khat-khat chaltaa
gaataa-gaataa pyaaraa-pyaaraa”
‘chhakda’ is the Hindi word in north India for cart.
2. The line
“bahti hai hai ann ki dhaaraa”
should read
“bahti hai hai amrit ki dhaaraa”
3. The lines
“ho o o o
jyun diyaa ki lahar chale
ho o o o

should read
“ho o o o
jyun nadiyaa ki lahar chale
