Dil ki kahaani rang laayi hai

Posted on: October 16, 2010

“Chaudhvin Ka Chaand” (1960) was a movie that could be described as a quintessential Muslim social movie. In this movie, Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman played lead roles.

Like most movies of those days, this movie too boasted of great music. The title song of this movie has in fact gone on to become a timeless classic. Other songs of this movie are also in the same league as far as their longevity and popularity are concerned.

Here is a song from this movie which is sung by Asha Bhonsle. It is a Mujra song that is picturised on Minu Mumtaz, with Guru Dutt also present as her client in the kotha.

The song is written by Shakeel Badayuni and music is composed by Ravi.

And this song, like most songs of this movie, is a timeless classic.

Song-Dil ki kahaani rang laayi hai (Chaudhvin Ka Chaand) (1960) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

kabhi raaz-e-muhabbat
chhup nahin saktaa chhupaane se
ye wo toofaan hai jo
aur ubhrega dabaane se
mere sarkaar
mere sarkaar
kis uljhan ko lekar aaye ho dil mein
wo uljhan jaan li hamne
tumhaare sar jhukaane se
kyun

dil ki kahaani rang laayi hai
dil ki kahaani rang laayi hai
Allaa duhaayi hai duhaayi hai
Allaa duhaayi hai duhaayi hai
saansen hain halki-halki
aankhen hain chhalki-chhalki
saansen hain halki-halki
aankhen hain chhalki-chhalki
aaj to jaan pe ban aayi hai
aaj to jaan pe ban aayi hai
Allaa duhaayi hai duhaayi hai

kisi ko bhi muhabbat ke na phande mein Khudaa daale
kisi ko bhi muhabbat ke na phande mein Khudaa daale
kisi ko bhi muhabbat ke na phande mein Khudaa daale
ye jab chaahe banaa daale
ye jab chaahe mitaa daale
koi iskaa bharosaa hai
na kuchh iskaa thikaanaa hai
koi iskaa
koi iskaa
koi iskaa bharosaa hai
na kuchh iskaa thikaanaa hai
kisi ko zindagi de-de
kisi kaa ghar jalaa daale
kyunki
wallaah ye badi harjaayi hai
wallaah ye badi harjaayi hai
Allaa duhaayi hai duhaayi hai
saansen hain halki-halki
aankhen hain chhalki-chhalki
saansen hain halki-halki
aankhen hain chhalki-chhalki
aaj to jaan pe ban aayi hai
Allaa duhaayi hai duhaayi hai

hameshaa zindagi se khelte hain ishq ke maare
hameshaa zindagi se khelte hain ishq ke maare
hameshaa zindagi se khelte hain ishq ke maare
ye apni-apni qismat hai
koi jeete koi haare
arre taubaa
ye dastoor-e-muhabbat bhi qayaamat hai
arre taubaa
arre taubaa
arre taubaa
ye dastoor-e-mohabbat bhi qayaamat hai
raho khaamosh to dil ko jalaayen gham ke angaare
aur
aahen bharo to ruswaayi hai
aahen bharo to ruswaayi hai
Allaa duhaayi hai duhaayi hai
saansen hain halki-halki
aankhen hain chhalki-chhalki
saansen hain halki-halki
aankhen hain chhalki-chhalki
aaj to jaan pe ban aayi hai
Allaa duhaayi hai duhaayi hai
dil ki kahaani rang laayi hai

it was Mehndi (1958) movie’s composition which attracted Guru Dutt’s attention towards the composer Ravi. He sighned him for his 1960 production Choudhvin Ka Chand only because he liked his classical compositiol which represented that era and the atmosphere of Nawaabs,Mujras etc. Mehndi was in fact the first Umrao Jaan (same concept and story as that of 1981’s very popular Umro Jaan).
Shakeel Badayuni was the lyricist for Choudhvin Ka Chand which was incidentally his was first venture out of Ghulam Haider and the Naushaad .After sighning the cntract Ravi once answered in one in TV inerview that while coming out after the sighning the agreement Shakeel said “Dekho bai ,sambhaal lena.Maine kabhi bahar kaam nahi kiya”.
That shows how the Producer/Director and the lyricist took risk (within their own thinking ) to work with Ravi whoes career at that time was hardly four yrs. old.
But Ravi proved his worth .
This song is the example.
It is marvellous composition.

You are welcome. I am big fan of Ravi (& Roshan Lal) music from 60’s (& it has a lot to do with magic both created along Sahir).

There are many gems from Ravi that are pending in farmaish section.

Ye hawa ye nadi ka kinaara (Ghar Sansar)
Mera yaar bana hai dulha (Chaudhvin Kaa Chaand)
Bedardi mere Saiyan (Chaudhvin Kaa Chaand)
Hum to mohabbat karega (Delli ka thug)
Dekha hai zindagi ko kuch itna kareeb se (Ek Mahal ho Sapno ka)
Dil mein kisiki pyaar ka (Ek Mahal ho Sapno ka)
All songs from “Gauri” (1968)

Hopefully, ome day Atul will be able to post them all. Then, we will place more in farmaish section. 🙂
