Aaya aaya atariyaa pe koi chor

on:“Mera Gaaon Mera Desh” (1971) was regarded as the ultimate “daaku” movie till Sholay came about in 1975. In fact, Sholay had drawn liberally from “Mera Gaon Mera Desh”. The name Gabbar Singh was modelled on Gajjar Singh (played by the dashing Vinod Khanna). The dacoits of “Mera Gaaon mera desh” in fact looked more believable. And just because “Sholay” happened does not mean that “Mera Gaaon Mera Desh” should and could be wished away.
The songs of “Mera Gaaon Mera Desh” are just awesome. Anand Bakshi as lyricist and Laxmikant Pyarelal as music directors must have enjoyed creating the music of this movie and their enthusiasm clearly shows. The songs of this movie are full of verve and energy.
Laxmi Chaaya, normally a one dance wonder like Helen, had her day under the sun in this movie. She played a long and important role in this movie, and easily stole a march over Asha Parekh, the heroine, when it came to dances.
She got to sing and dance in at least three songs in this movie, the last time I counted. And these songs live on in memory even today.
Here is the wonderful song “aaya aaya atariya pe koi chor” from this movie. The lyrics by Anand Bakshi are quite cute and full of earthy and witty references from rural India. Lata sung this song with the same gusto that Rafi used to display while singing for Shammi Kapoor. And Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music is full of joie de vivre.

Song-Aaya aya atariye pe koi chor (Mera Gaon Mera Desh) (1971) Singer-Lata, Lyrics- Anand Bakshi, MD- Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
aayaa aayaa atariyaa pe koyi chor
aayaa aayaa atariyaa pe koyi chor
aayaa aayaa atariyaa pe koyi chor
o bhaabhi aanaa deepak jalaanaa
o bhaabhi aanaa zaraa deepak jalaanaa
dekho balam hain yaa koyi aur
dar gayi main ke mar gayi main
ke aayaa aayaa atariyaa pe koyi chor
o bhaabhi aanaa deepak jalaanaa
o bhaabhi aanaa zaraa deepak jalaanaa
dekho balam hain ya koyi aur
dar gayi main ke mar gayi main
ke aayaa aayaa atariyaa pe koyi chor
aaya aaya
man upar neehe, khidki ke peechhe, ankhiyon ko meenchhe
baithi main sochoon saanwari, ib kaa karoon main baavari
bairi balam ho to chup rahoon main
bairi balam ho to chup rahoon main
doojaa koyi ho machaa doon main shor
aayaa aayaa atariyaa pe koyi chor
aaya aaya
dhokhaa khaayaa hai, ji ghabraayaa hai, koyi aayaa hai
nainon mein naina jab gaye, aangan mein kangan baj gaye
main naachi aise, kathputli jaise
main naachi aise, kathputli jaise
naa jaane kheenchi hai kisne dor
aayaa aayaa atariyaa pe koyi chor
aaya aaya
rainaa matwaari, kaari kajraari, sainyaa main haari
detaa dikhaayi kuchh nahin, chhup naa gayaa ho wo kahin
ghar mein chhupaa ho to jaayegaa pakdaa
ghar mein chhupaa ho to jaayegaa pakdaa
man mein chhupaa to phir kyaa hai zor
aayaa aayaa atariyaa pe koyi chor
aaya aaya
pe koyi chor
aaya
aayaa aayaa atariyaa pe koyi
dar gayi main
ke mar gayi main

THis is such a good movie, and though Sholay drew a lot from it it is a very different film from Sholay too…and yes, Laxmi was showcased appropriately for once 😀
