Kaahe kartaa hai tu itna shor… tera mera ek rastaa

Posted on: September 9, 2009

Here is a song from a lesser known movie called “Ek Paheli” (1971).

This is in fact a rare song as well as a special song.

I call it a rare song because it is sung by Usha Khanna and Rafi. Usha Khanna, normally a music director decided to lend her own voice to Tuntun whereas Rafi sings for Rajendranath.

Just because this song is picturised on Tuntun and Rajendranath, this song is regarded as a comedy song. Yes, it is a song in which Tuntun comes down upon Rajendranath like a ton of bricks, expressing her love for him, whereas Rajendranath tries very hard to shake her off throughout the song.

Now I am firm in my view that love is a birthright of all characters in the movie, not just the hero and the heroine. If hero and heroine sing a song of love, it is called a romantic/ seductive song, but if a set of comedians sing a similar song, it is regarded as a comedy song. I take exception to such thinking. It is a romantic song, as far as I am concerned. Tuntun has as much of a right to fall in love in Bollywood movies as the lead actresses in these movies.

And I wonder why Usha Khanna did not use Tuntun’s own voice. Tuntun, to my mind, will always be close to my heart for her fabulous singing voice. “Afsaana likh rahi hoon dile beqaraar ka” sung by her as Uma Devi is one of the immortal songs from the golden era of Bollywood music.

This song is written by either Asad Bhopali or Omkar Verma. these were the two lyricists credited in this movie, though I am not sure who wrote this song.

Ha! I see at induna that this is a Feroz Khan-Tanuja starrer, and a horror film at that. Sigh. Why are these things not on DVD with subs, why? It’s very hard to be a firangi fan, I’m telling you. I would buy it just for Rajendranath and Tun Tun.

Yes, Tanuja was the ghost in this movie, I think.

I remember seeing this movie as a young boy.
I remember it had its eerie moments – I think it was a pretty short movie, probably not even 2 hours.
Other than this, I only remember one song “main ek paheli hoon”. Nothing else.
