Hamse nain milaana BA paas karke

Posted on: June 25, 2009

What does one expect when Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist , Madan Mohan is the music director and Mukesh is the singer ? One sad song par excellence ?

Not necessarily.

Here is a song from “Aankhen” (1950), which was the debut movie as a music director for Madan Mohan. In this movie, Madan Mohan used several voices- Rafi, Shamshad Begum,Meena Kapoor, Mukesh,Raj Khosla, even Madan Mohan himself- but the voice that would become associated with his music- viz Lata was missing. And Madan Mohan used lyricists like Saraswati Kumar Deepak, Bharat Vyas, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and B D Mishra in this movie for the 8 songs of this movie.

I have already posted the fun rail song from this movie, viz “rail me jiya mora sananan hoye re” sung by Raj Khosla, the director of this movie.

This song “Hamse nain milaana BA paas karke” has been sung by Shamshad Begum and Mukesh, and it is a great fun song. The insistence of the lady that her saajan must pass BA before she will have anything to do with him is cute. Those days, passing BA was indeed a big deal. Those who passed BA actually mentioned this degree with their name the way doctors now a days mention their medical degrees with their name. I recall that there used to be a writer writing spy thrillers (published under the banner of “Jaasoosi Duniya” ) who was known as Ibne Safi BA.

People who passed BA were regarded very highly in society. A respectable job was there for the taking for them. Incidentally, few people bothered about the marks obtained in the BA exam. A person passing BA with third division was the same as one passing in first division.

The song is so cute. The lady only knows one thing, that passing BA is the be all and end all and her beau must have the degree. She is not expecting him to top the exam or secure high marks, she just wants him to pass the exam. And if one reads between the line, she does not mind if he needs several attempts to clear the exam, but clear the exam he must.

What a great fun song created by Madan Mohan ! This song is a far cry from the songs in his subsequent movies. The opening music of this song is reminiscent of O P Nayyar music of later days more than Madan Mohan music of later days.

What a wonderful song this ! Enjoy it.

Lyrics

hamse nain milaana BA paas karke
hamse nain milaana BA paas karke
hamse preet lagaana BA pass karke
ho BA pass karke ji BA pass karke
BA pass karke mohe degree dikhaao ji
mohe degree dikhaao

ye hai BA ki degree gori gusse me na aao
ho gori gusse me na aao
apni ye char sau bees kisi aur pe chalaao
apni ye char sau bees kisi aur pe chalaao
jaao ye hai jhoothi degree
isko koode me phenk aao
ki isko koode me phenk aao
jaaye bhaad me aisa pyaas
tere ye nakhre hain bekaar
hamko gusaa na dilaanaa bakwaas kar ke
hamse preet lagaana BA paas kar ke
ho BA paas kar ke ji BA paas kar ke

BA nahin hoon lekin main hoon ishq me MA paas
BA nahin hoon lekin main hoon ishq me MA paas
aji tum kya jaano Mr Majnu dost hain mere khaas
aji ustaad the mere khaas
jungle me tum dono jaakar karo ikatthi ghaas
chale aaye ho tum akal ka satyanaash kar ke
hamse preet lagaana BA paas karke
ho BA paas karke ji BA paas karke

ishq ki haay toone qadar na jaani
degree ke peeche tu to huyi hai deewani
ishq ki haay toone qadar na jaani
degree ke peeche tu to huyi hai deewani
good bye good bye
good bye o meri raani
maine marne ki hai thaani
mere baalmaa na jaana dil udaas karke
hamse preet lagaana BA paas karke
ho BA paas karke ji BA paas karke
hamse nain milaana BA paas karke
hamse preet lagaana BA paas karke
ho BA paas karke ji BA paas karke

Wow ! your link gives so much information about Ibne Safi BA, that I had no idea about.

The fact that Ibne Safi had migrated to Pakistan was not known to me. I recall that in India, his books “Jasoosi Duniya” were published from Allahabad in Hindi and Urdu. I read a few of his books in Hindi. As a young kid, I was of course not supposed to read such books.

The links provided are invaluable. how I wish that there was a link where Hindi version of his books ( or English version) were available for reading.

Incidentally, in the Hindi version that I read, Faridi was renamed as Vinod. Yes, I read the story of Colonel Vinod and Captain Hameed, and it is only now that I have come to know that originally it was Faridi and Hameed.

I remember Ibne Safi novels, but I do not have them with me. The last time I saw such a novel was in 1970s. There were times when I was an avid collector of books, but that was way back and that was about English Novels. I am sorry that I never collected Ibne Safi books and as such I am not in a position to help you there.

You are right Atul. In those days BA was an achievement as you see Dr with my name.Another famous write of the day was Moti BA.
Anankhen was a love triangle. Nalini Jaywant is in love with Shekher who happens to be younger brother of Bharat Bhushan. But due to a mistake of a deaf aunt she gets married to Bharat Bhushan, and Shekhar loses his eye sight due to the trauma. The whole film revolves round this until an eye operation restores Shekhar’s eye sight to see his beloved is his Bhabhi. He curses her a lot , she eventually falling over a cliff and Shekhar follows her, and out comes a murti of Radha Krishna from the water as Nalini Jaywant is Radha and Shekhar is Krishen.
