Aa gale lag jaa mere sapne mere apne

Posted on: May 9, 2009

When I was a kid, wearing a swimming costume used to be a big deal for Bollywood actresses. Wearing such costumes was considered against the Indian culture and was considered tantamount to exposing. Thus we used to read interviews from virtuous actresses saying that they would never wear such revealing dresses in their movies.

My message for all those virtuous Bhartiya Naris. Dear actress ji. Do not make a virtue out of your incompetence. You do not have the figure worth “exposing”. You are lucky enough to get roles in Bollywood. You are not good enough to get roles in western movies if you were born there. So cut out the crap and shut your mouth. You mean to say that female swimmers are exposing when they compete in swimming competitions ?

There were of course actresses in Bollywood who acted in swimming costumes. Sharmila Tagore and Saira Bano were the pioneers in wearing such costumes.

Here is one of the first swimming costume song that I have come across in a Bollywood song. It is from “April Fool” (1964). This song is sung by Rafi and lip synced by Vishwajeet. The picturisation shows many ladies swimming in the swimming pool making some perfect formations. The picturisation is great and must have made quite a splash during those days.

Sahir Ludhianvi has written this song.

I must say, I was quite impressed with the picturisation of this song. Even otherwise, the song itself is worth listening to, and it was quite a popular song during its time.

Song-Aa gale lag jaa mere sapne mere apne(April Fool) (1964) Singers-Rafi, Lyrics- Shailendra, MD- Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

aa gale lag jaa mere sapne mere apne mere paas aa
aa gale lag jaa mere sapne mere apne mere paas aa
aa gale lag jaa mere sapne mere apne mere paas aa
ho ho ho aa gale lag jaa

aabaad hai tu meri dhadkanon mein meri jaan tujhmen basi hai
baadal se jo aas hai mor ko mere dil ko wo tujhse lagi hai
ik teri muskaan angdaayi leti huyi meri taqdeer jaage
ik teri jhalki chali aaye pal mein meri manzilen mere aage
aa gale lag jaa mere sapne mere apne mere paas aa
aa gale lag jaa mere sapne mere apne mere paas aa
ho ho ho aa gale lag jaa

mat aazmaa tu mere pyaar ko khel mat yoon meri zindagi se
ulfat ke maaron ko kyaa maarnaa jaan de dete hain jo khushi se
ye husn jisko mile jaan-e-jaan bedili usko sajti nahin hai
ho khu-ba-ru chaand se jo haseen berukhi usko janchti nahin hai
aa gale lag jaa mere sapne mere apne mere paas aa
aa gale lag jaa mere sapne mere apne mere paas aa
aa gale lag jaa mere sapne mere apne mere paas aa
ho ho ho aa gale lag jaa

My ears and my eyes thank you for posting this beautiful song.

I am not so sure if it is fair to apply changing social/aesthetic standards and tastes retroactively. Things change. We move on.

Come to think of it, by today’s standards, shouldn’t the hero Biswajeet in this song be showing his ripped muscles instead of wearing that silly (again by today’s taste) outfit?

By the way, did I miss hearing Suman Kalyanpur’s voice in this version?

Oops ! Mentioning Suman Kalyanpur’s name was a slip of my fingers . This happened because I try to post several songs a day and that may have led to this error. It is just a Rafi solo.

Seems lyrics for this song is by Shailendra and not Sahir as written in your writeup. Please check.

One of the top most songs sung by Rafi. This is a very difficuly song to sing which rafi sung so conveniently.

The prelude instrumental music is phenomenal and shows synchronized swimming. It lasts longer than the song itself.

Rafi touches new heights by singing in such high pitch. Only Rafi can sing this song noone else. I agree with farhat.

Atul Ji, as mentioned by another member above, in the write up, the lyricist should be mentioned as Shailendra, and not Sahir Ludhianvi.

One of Rafi Saheb’s best ever for me. Have loved this song ever since I saw the film.

What an amazing song by Rafi, I think it has longest prelude of all Hindi songs.
