Kaahe tarsaaye jiyaraa

on:The music of “Chitralekha” (1964) was a labour of love for Roshan. He had great hopes that his music and the movie would be great success. But the movie as well as its music failed to win the approval of audience. Roshan was heartbroken.
Well, Indian audiences were not mature enough to appreciate this kind of quality that went over their head. They would rather have their familiar kind of lighter songs than classical raga based songs.
“Chitralekha” is full of superb songs that should have deserved better fate. But none of these songs came anywhere in contention in the popularity stakes ( for instance Binaca geetmala ). In fact, Ameen Sayani specially made a mention of this fact in a Binaca geetmala programme where he expressed his disappointment that “Chitralekha”, arguably one of the best ever musical blockbusters should receive such a luke warm response from audience.
Nevertheless, such songs have survived, and those we can still listen to these songs and appreciate them.
Here is a song “Kaahe tarsaaye jiyaraa” from “Chitralekha”. It is based on raag Kalavati and it is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Usha Mangeshkar. Sahir Ludhianvi wrote the lyrics.
This song is a superb example of a semi classical song and dance.

Yes, beautiful song indeed. Evokes faint memories from the dim past. I have heard this song in my childhood but then forgotten it until now.
