Reshmi ujaala hai

Bollywood movies can often be likened to Indian food- too many ingredients, too spicy, and adding certain stuff is a must whatever the dish.
One essential ingredient of Bollywood movies of 1960s and 1970s was a cabaret song. Here is a very archtypical cbater song from the movie “Sharmilee”. The cabaret dancer is not Helen ,but Jayshree T. The playback singer is Asha Bhonsle, expectedly. And the cabaret dance is exactly the stuff that the movie makers expected would bring the movie watchers to the movie hall.
And the movie makers may not have been too wrong. If they had such dull actors as Shashi Kapoor and Rakhi in lead roles, then I suppose one needed evert tricks up their sleeves to attract eyeballs, considering that Shashi Kapoor and Rakhi were not capable of that.
Incidentally Jayshree T (T= Talpade) had another sister called Meena T and she was a dancer too. I think they had a third dancing sister too, but I am not so sure of that by now.

Reshmi ujaala hai
makhmali andheraa
aaj ki raat aisaa kuchh karo
Reshmi ujaala hai
makhmali andheraa
aaj ki raat aisaa kuchh karo
ho nahin ho nahin ho nahin saweraa
aisi to raat roz nahin aaye
aankon se koi roz na pilaaye
aaj to jaam se hamare
pi le pi le pi le zara zara zara zara
Reshmi ujaala hai
makhmali andheraa
aaj ki raat aisaa kuchh karo
ho nahin ho nahin ho nahin saweraa
aisa re shabaab aur hai kahaan
meri zulfon ka aashiq hai jahaan
dekhi na hogi toone aisi aisi aisi adaa
Reshmi ujaala hai
makhmali andheraa
aaj ki raat aisaa kuchh karo
ho nahin ho nahin ho nahin saweraa
aa mere paas sochta hai kya
aaj hai muaaf teri hara khataa
deewana tere liye kabse
dil hai dil hai dil hai mera mere mera
Reshmi ujaala hai
makhmali andheraa
aaj ki raat aisaa kuchh karo
ho nahin ho nahin ho nahin saweraa

I remember this as a hit song of its time.
The movie itself was a reasonably big hit – especially considering it was a non-Rajesh Khanna movie of that time !!!
I saw this movie during my summer vacation trip to Bombay (family had gone to Bombay for the holidays). Saw 2 movies that vacation in Bombay – this one and Tangewaala.
