Tasweer teri dil me jis din se utaari hai

Posted on: March 23, 2009

There are several Bollywood songs that I have heard and enjoyed, without knowing much about those songs except the names of the singers.

Here is one such song. This song “tasweer teri di me jis din se utaari hai” is one that I may have heard many a times, including at nights in the Vividh Bharati’s “Chaayageet” programme. this is romantic song, perfect for late night listening on a moonlit night.

Now I realise that this duet sung by Lata and Rafi was picturised on Mala Sinha and Dev Anand. So far so good. I not only know the names of these actors, I am aslo acquainted with the names of the lyricist (Majrooh Sultanpuri) and the music director (salil Chowdhary). But frankly, I had never heard of this movie called “Maaya” (1961).

Who knows how many such timeless classics were created for movies whose names I may never have heard of. I am sure there are many such unheard of movies. Luckily, these days it is possible to stumble upon such gems, and I am happy that I am stumbling upon them fairly regularly.

Song-Tasweer teri dil mein jis din se utaari hai (Maaya) (1961) Singers-Lata, Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-salil Chowdhary

Lyrics

phirun tujhe sang leke, naye naye rang leke
phirun tujhe sang leke, naye naye rang leke
sapnon ki mahfil mein
tasweer teri dil mein

maathe ki bindiyaa tu hai sanam
nainon kaa kajraa piyaa teraa gham
maathe ki bindiyaa tu hai sanam
nainon kaa kajraa piyaa teraa gham
nain ke neeche neeche
rahoon tere peechhe peechhe
chalun kisi manzil mein
phirun tujhe sang leke, naye naye rang leke
sapnon ki mahfil mein
tasweer teri dil mein

tumse nazar jab gayi hai mil
jahaan hai kadam tere wahin meraa dil
tumse nazar jab gayi hai mil
jahaan hai kadam tere wahin meraa dil
jhuke jahaan palken teri, khule jahaan zulfen teri
rahun usi manzil mein
phirun tujhe sang leke, naye naye rang leke
sapnon ki mahfil mein
tasweer teri dil mein

toofaan uthaayegi duniyaa magar
ruk na sakegaa dil ka safar
toofaan uthaayegi duniyaa magar
ruk na sakegaa dil ka safar
yoon hi nazar milti hogi
yoon hi shama jalti hogi
teri meri manzil mein
phirun tujhe sang leke, naye naye rang leke
phirun tujhe sang leke, naye naye rang leke
sapnon ki mahfil mein
tasweer teri dil mein

True. Those were the days of beautiful songs excelling in lyrics, tunes and singing. The songs broadcasted on Radio programmes like SLBC, Vividh Bharti, AIR Urdu Programme could not make much deep impact on most of us (although we appreciated without knowing details) owing to age factor and limited facilities available during those days. This followed the period of new songs and it was feared that the old melodies became a thing of the past. Thanks to internet and continued interest of few persons these songs (alongwith videos) are brought at the helm and we are enjoying. Hope this will continue till the memory lasts.

Translation :

since the day I drew your likening in my heart
you are with me wherever I go, in varied hues
in dreams, I dwell with thee

O beloved, you are my pride and destiny
Your sorrow is the darkness in my eyes
I will be your shadow, with eyes downcast
Wherever you care to take me

I am yours since the moment we met
my heart is with you wherever you be
I shall stay where you let your hair down
With eyes downcast ?

let the world raise a storm of objections
it will not hamper the heart’s journey
with meeting of eyes, the flames of love burn,
towards the destination, which is ours

Thanks a lot for providing this valuable information to me . I have downloaded audio version of this song just now . It is solo sung by Lataji . This was composed in 1960 and lyricist and MD both is Salilda . The Bengali version could not get that popularity as ” Tasveer Teri Dil Mein .” I will try to watch the Bengali Version on You Tube .
Salilda also used to write lyrics of Bengali songs composed by him .
One such song ” Ei Duranto Ghunir ” ( This Untamed Whirlwind’s ) composed and lyrics penned down by him , sung by Hemanta Mukherjee was reused in ” Aaha Rimjhim Ke Yeh Pyaare Pyaare Geet Mile ” in ” Usne Kahaa Tha ” sung by Talat Mehmood Sahib and Lataji .Lyrics of this Hindi version were penned down by great Shailendraji .
