The golden era of Bollywood music (1950-1980) saw an embarrassment of riches as far as talented music directors were concerned. Among all these music directors, Ravi is one of the lesser known names. But if one looks at his output, he must be regarded as the most successful and most classy music directors.
I have wrote in detail about Ravi in my other blog. If one looks at the list of iconic Bollywood songs, one will find that a considerable number of such songs were composed by Ravi.
Here is an iconic song that Ravi created in Talat Mehmood’s voice. This was the first time Ravi worked with Talat Mehmood and he created this masterpiece- “sab kuchh luta ke hosh me aaye to kya kiya”. What lyrics by Prem Dhawan ( another forgotten name ?). It has to be one of the most memorable lyrics on this genre of songs.
The movie is called “Ek Saal” (1957). Talat Mehmood’s characteristic quivereing voice singing the lyrics of Prem Dhawan under the music of Ravi create magic. It is a song that can be called an ideal song to listen to when one is in a contemplative mood.
On 19 august 2010, it was discovered that the song “sab kuchh lutaa ke hosh mein aaye to kyaa huaa” was missing from the blog. And Lalitha, who discovered this song missing was aghast. I too was worried, and I thought that this song was kidnapped for ransom. When I went through the list of songs, I found that this song was not posted, and I posted this song.
Then I found that the song was already posted, and that was in december 1208 itself. The reason why it had gone missing was that I had not provided the link to this song in my “movie wise list” as well as in the “music director wise list”, but it was there in “yearwise list” . And then found that this song was listed in all the three lists, but under “Ek Nazar” (1955) instead of “Ek Saal” (1957). Now I have made the corrections in the link. So it was actually a case of the song gone missing like kids in Hindi movie go missing in Kumbh Mela and grow up with other guardians. They meet with their parents again in the last reel, and here this song has been reunited with its rightful movie again after two years.
So I quickly deleted the recent post on this song and retained the old posted song. But initially, I had posted it only with Talat Mehmood version, and I was not aware of the Lata version.
Now here are both the versions.
Talat Mehmood version of this song is the one that is the one that is know to most. It is picturised on Ashok Kumar. I never knew that Talat Mehmood had sung for Ashok Kumar. When it came to the (for me) lesser known Lata version, I was even more surprised to note that this version was picturised on Madhubala. Ashok Kumar and Madhubala acting together in a movie- that was news for me. And it is one of the few occasions when I found a piano song picturised on Madhubala.
The real starfor this song has to be its lyrics, and that means Prem Dhawan. It is the lyrics that has made it a timeless classic. And his song is yet another example to prove my contention that a large number of iconic songs created in Hindi movies were composed by Ravi.

Is Ravi really lesser known? Because he’s one of my favorites; I think if I HAD to pick two from that era it would be Roshan and Ravi. He wrote a lot of great soundtracks…

There were so many great music directors during the golden era that one is spoiled for choice.
Yes, I thought that Roshan and Ravi had quite a few things in common.

Song kidnapped for ransom? Would that be songnapping? You had me in splits of laughter! Anyway, all’s well that ends well, and I am glad to see that the song has been restored to its rightful place and is doing well.
Thanks, Atul! As you can tell, I love this song, both for its lyrics and Talat’s voice, as well as Lata’s. I can’t say the same for the video with Ashok Kumar. I feel the song would have been better on Dilip or even Dev Anand. Oh well! I just shut my eyes and listen to it, anyway.

Excellent song.
Talat’s voice was often called “silken”.
I am sure anybody who listens to this song will agree.
