Rasik balma dil kyun lagaaya

on:“Chori Chori” was a movie that is still remembered for its music. This was a rare movie where Manna Dey had sung the songs picturised on Raj Kapoor and those songs had become very popular.
The female playback singer of this movie was Lata of course, and she too had come up with some mewmorable songs in this movie.
Here is a Lata classic from this movie. “Rasik Balma dil kyun lagaaya”. What a melodious song! Written by Hasrat Jaipuri and composed by Shankar Jaikishan, this song was picturised on Nargis. The song can still hold you spellbound, if listened under the right conditions, viz under “chayageet” conditions. 😉
One can only say one thing. They do not make songs like this anymore.
Song-Rasik balma dil kyun lagaaya (Chori Chori ) (1956) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD- Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
rasik balmaa, haay, dil kyun lagaayaa
tose dil kyun lagaayaa, jaise rog lagaayaa
jaise rog lagaayaa
rasik balmaa, ho
jab yaad aaye tihaari
soorat wo pyaari pyaari
jab yaad aaye tihaari
soorat wo pyaari pyaari
nehaa lagaa ke haari
aa
nehaa lagaa ke haari
tadpoon main gham ki maari
rasik balmaa, haay, dil kyun lagaayaa
tose dil kyun lagaayaa, jaise rog lagaayaa
rasik balmaa, ho
dhoondhe hain paagal nainaa
paaye na ik pal chainaa
dhoondhe hain paagal nainaa
paaye na ik pal chainaa
dasti hai ujdi rainaa
aa
dasti hai ujdi rainaa
kaase kahoon main bainaa
rasik balmaa, haay, dil kyun lagaayaa
tose dil kyun lagaayaa, jaise rog lagaayaa
rasik balmaa, ho

This is such a wonderful song! I am reminded of starry nights in Hyderabad and a friend whose voice rivals Lataji’s, and she would oblige us all by singing oldies, including this one. During the day, we would think up all the old Lata songs, and hunt up the lyrics for them, and after dinner, we would sit outside and she would belt out song after song. Those were the days! Thanks for bringing back old memories.

It is such a beautiful song! When I became interested in compiling a list of songs in Yaman (Kalyan) raga, this song came up, along with Chand Phir Nikala which has a similar feel to it. Also, Zara Si Aahat Hoti, Bhooli Hui Yadon, and Aansoo Bhari Hai share some similarity, even in the mood.

OMG! out of this world.. Lataji’s voice & this SJ music make the little hairs on my body stand up.
Nargis looks beautiful, even while crying. Her features resemble so much with Tabu’s.
