The third album in David Bowie’s Berlin trilogy doesn’t have the critical reputation of the first two, but for my money it’s the best of the lot.
Lodger gets away from the Brian Eno-influence instrumentals and instead offers up 10 tightly constructed avant-garde pop songs. Instrumentally dense but melodically clean, these tracks sound like they could play at an underground college bar on the moon.
Lodger was released in 1979, meaning I’ve now covered 12 albums released over a 13-year span. Tomorrow will make it 14 in 13 years, which, considering the quality of these albums, is just a ridiculous pace.
A lot of Bowie’s work from the Berlin period is reminiscent of Remain in Light-era Talking Heads, even though that album wasn’t released until 1980. On today’s SOTD, ‘D.J.,’ Bowie is deliberately imitating David Byrne’s singing style. Lots of influencing going on in both directions, I guess.
