Press Release: Sons Fans Express Views on Stadium Relocation

November 10, 2014

DFCconsultOVER 200 supporters and local residents came last week to view outline scheme proposals for a new Dumbarton FC stadium at the Young’s Farm site.

The developers, who are majority shareholders at the Championship club, report that the overall feedback to them is positive about their ideas, but acknowledge in their own statement  (9 November 2014) that people understandably need assurance on the costs associated with the relocation of the stadium.

Simon Barrow, spokesperson for the Sonstrust, the provident society that brings together hundreds of Dumbarton fans and has representation on the Club Board, said:

“This extraordinary turnout on two midweek afternoons and an early evening shows how keen fans and the local community are to have a say on this ambitious development proposal.

“Many clearly like the idea of a better equipped stadium with training, community use and hospitality facilities. However, fans naturally want to be assured that the proposals will be financially and environmentally sustainable for all concerned.

“The Club and its owners are now receiving specific feedback on issues like facilities, access to the site, and the phasing of the development.

“We welcome the fact that they have publicly stated that they are looking to provide a realistic financial framework for the relocation after the respective planning applications are determined.

“There will be a further opportunity to make comments and put questions to Dumbarton FC representatives and the planning consultant for the new stadium scheme at a General Meeting of the Sonstrust at 7pm on Wednesday 26th November, at the Abbotsford Hotel.

“What is absolutely clear is that people want to make sure that what is done is in the best interests of the club, its supporters and the local community,” said Barrow, who is the Sonstrust’s communications and projects officer, and is liaising directly with the Club on behalf of the trust about the relocation proposals.

The Sons Supporters’ Society (known popularly as the Sonstrust) was launched in May 2001 and was the first football trust established in Scotland. It is a registered Provident society, operates on cooperative principles, has several hundred members, is a shareholder in Dumbarton FC, has an elected member on the Club Board, and provides active support for the Club – including running its website and producing its match day programme.
