Game of Thrones is heading to the Emmy Awards tonight, hoping to bring home more prizes to add to their already impressive total of eight wins this year. The Emmy Awards ceremony airs tonight, live at 8PM-11PM EDT on the Fox network.

Carice Van Houten, Gwendoline Christie and Sophie Turner got the party started early, attending the BAFTA Los Angeles Tea Party last night.

Gold Derby chatted with Sophie on the red carpet about who she thinks deserves an Emmy:

Oh, Carice.

The writers are getting in on the fun, too. Writer/producer Bryan Cogman shared a photo from the HBO Emmys party with Juilliard classmate and actress Tracie Thoms.

Unfortunately, at least one Game of Thrones nominee won’t be hitting the red carpet tonight. Emilia Clarke is busy filming season six in Navarre, Spain.

As it happens, today is also George R.R. Martin‘s 67th birthday. Happy birthday, Mr. Martin! May there be many more.

Good luck to the cast and crew of Game of Thrones at tonight’s ceremony!

  1. Best of luck. Hoping (in particular) that Lena wins Best Supporting Actress, and the show wins best drama series. Any other wins would be great though!

C’mon its George’s birthday, it’s the least they should do.

Happy Birthday George. Enjoy your day off in LA.

  2. Really hoping for GoT to win Best Drama. It’s time.

Sorry to say, I am not digging Gwen’s outfit. 🙁
Carice and Sophie’s outfits – love! They look sooo pretty.

  3. I really hope Lena wins tonight. She deserves it..but I think Uzo Aduba or Christina Hendricks are more likely to win.

That being said, Mad Men deserves to win Best Drama and Directing and pretty much everything else over GOT.

  4. I love Sophie to death, but I am not digging that outfit. Sorry.

And, Gold Derby, how about investing in a freaking microphone so I can what she’s saying. I mean, I know the LA Times are on hard times, but, come on…

  5. “Carpet Munching” by Carice was epic. Was on the verge of retweeting with the hashtag #CarpetMunchingFTW lol. Anywho! Could hardly hear Sophie in that interview. Methinks she wanted to say her favorite scene to shoot was the rape scene (because she’s said it before), but then she thought better of it. Side note…Sophie’s gorgeous. Why…..I mean, WHO…thought that outfit was a good idea? Woman! You’re a beauty! Dress accordingly, damnit. ?

The only person I want to win tonight is Lena. Besides her, I don’t really care. Btw, is Lena attending this?

  6. and the Emmy for best TV show episode ever made goes to???????? What?????? Hardholme is not nominated???? Let’s just pack up and go home

  7. RosanaZugey: Side note…Sophie’s gorgeous. Why…..I mean, WHO…thought that outfit was a good idea? Woman! You’re a beauty! Dress accordingly, damnit

How jokingly did you say such nonsense? Hopefuly the the answer is “very jokingly.” Still not a very good joke.

  8. Ravyn: I know! She looks like the waitress.

Lmao! ? Yeah, she most definitely looks under dressed. Everyone looks fancy and she’s looking like hired help. ? Fml. The girl doesn’t look good in white. *Yells towards Sophie* Don’t wear white, woman! Every time she wears white she looks terrible. Dark colors are where it’s at for her. I’ve never seen her look bad in blacks and blues.

  9. Sophie was trying to blend in with the catering staff. Gwendoline forgot her dress and wrapped a bedsheet into a toga. Carice looks amazing.

  10. Luka Nieto: How jokingly did you say such nonsense? Hopefuly the the answer is “very jokingly.” Still not a very good joke.

Oh…I’m not joking. *Confused* Sophie’s gorgeous…I stand by that comment to the end. And that outfit is hideous. I’ll stand by that comment as well. ?

Edit: I fully expect her to come out looking fantastic tonight. She’s never failed to look spectacular on award nights. Award nights and premiere’s = epic.

Also…and more importantly, Happy Birthday GRRM!

  11. I thought Gwen was looking a little less towering than usual in that first photo, but on closer inspection of the later profile shot she’s wearing flats, and so graciously conceding Carice and Sophie a few inches.

I like Sophie’s look, other than the fact that her pants are so long they cover her shoes. I guess that’s in style now (seeing as I doubt she got that off the rack and it isn’t the right length)? Looks weird to me.

    Carice looks gorgeous, per usual.

Some fairly high-profile absences due to filming, between Kit and Emilia (though the former may also just be absent because he’s supposedly done with the show, even though that pretense has worn pretty thin).

  12. I try not to make stupid comments about the pictures on this site, but there are so many where people are positioned in front of things that look like part of their outfit/hair/body that sometimes I can’t avoid it. And this is one of those times – in that top photo the umbrella behind Sophie looks like a massive sticking out collar, of the kind the Count on Sesame St and many other vampires have on their cloaks 😉

  13. That was her outfit for the BAFTA Tea Party. I’m going to assume she’ll be dressed a bit more fancy this evening.

  14. Sure, I’ve seen better outfits, but I don’t think Sophie’s is that bad. Has she looked better? Sure. Over time, several women have donned their version of the black pantsuit, and this is simply an updated version. Again, I think Sophie has looked better, but I think to say she looks hideous is a bit of an overstatement. For me, hideous should be reserved for Lara Flynn Boyle at the Oscars, and that thing Bjork wore.

  15. RosanaZugey: The girl doesn’t look good in white.

In fairness, its been in the 90s here in LA, so wearing white may have been a good idea, especially since it looks like the event was outside. OK, I’m reaching here….

  16. Clob,

How is that not fancy? It’s more businesswoman style than one normally sees at these events, but it’s certainly not casual.

  17. I wonder if Mad Men will get a closer look for its final season…
It may have been hit or miss in the beginning of the season, but it ended very strong! Plus, its 3 nominated actors have been shut out in the past and this is the last chance for the TV Academy to recognize them….

This could be Game of Thrones year if Mad Men does not get some send-off love…

I would cheer – and giggle a little – if GOT won for Best Drama tonight after so many “fans” have stated over and over how disappointing, bad, or downright terrible Season 5 was!

  18. Luka Nieto:
    RosanaZugey,

I meant the “dress accordingly” part. She can dress however she wants.

Well, naturally, she can wear whatever she wants to wear. My comment was said in the context that a beautiful woman should be in beautiful clothes; clothes that match (or enhance) her looks. That [suit] doesn’t go well with her looks.

  19. Kay:
Sorry to say, I am not digging Gwen’s outfit.

Right? This is not the first time she raided the linen closet for her ensemble. She has put on some really nice outfits before, but she tends to select garments that lean more toward upholstery than fashion.

  20. Wimsey,

Now that someone pointed out it’s from the tea (yes, I know that was already stated, but it didn’t register with me…I’ll blame it on Carice. I was laughing over her tweet, and thinking red carpet), I like it more. It did seem a little off for the red carpet and the awards event, (which was what most of my “she’s looked better” was about) but not for a tea. It makes me think of a young, 21st century Diane Keaton look, which was why I mentioned the black pantsuit look.

  21. Darquemode,

There’s a lot of people predicting a new surge of interest in Mad Men, but I’m kind of skeptical of that just based on past Emmy history. Granted, this is kind of a staid field; there’s only one new show competing, Better Call Saul (a great show, mind you), and it’s a prequel to an earlier series, so it doesn’t really “feel” new.

I think Mad Men‘s most likely awards chances are Hamm (I pray to God they take their last chance to honour him) and another writing prize (they have two nominations, one of them for the finale). My personal drama predictions:

    Best Drama – GOT
Best Actor, Drama – Jon Hamm
Best Actress, Drama – Viola Davis
Best Supporting Actor, Drama – Jonathan Banks
Best Supporting Actress, Drama – Lena Headey
Best Director, Drama – Steven Soderbergh (I went back and forth on this one, since his series has really no other support, but in the end I’ll bank on the big name movie director)
Best Writing, Drama – “Person to Person”

  22. I feel obligated to make a comment about how Carice’s carpet munching euphemism is an impressive display of cunning linguistics (whomp whomp…) from someone without English as their primary language.

In seriousness though, best of luck to everyone. I kind of want GoT to win the drama emmy just for GRRM’s birthday, but it’s fairly unlikely against Mad Men. Wonder if Lena will be there? I feel like we haven’t really seen her this season, though she did just give birth not too long ago so I’m sure the guys scheduled all her material for the latest timeframe they could. Or shes just a ninja.

  23. Darquemode:
I would cheer – and giggle a little – if GOT won for Best Drama tonight after so many “fans” havestated over and over how disappointing, bad, or downright terrible Season 5 was!

If GoT wins tonight westeors.org, tumblr and Reddit ASOIF will together perform a hara-kiri.

  24. Shockmesane,

I would be surprised if Lena wasn’t there, seeing as she’s widely expected to win — unless she’s too busy filming, but we haven’t had any indication of that.

  25. Ravyn: In fairness, its been in the 90s here in LA, so wearing white may have been a good idea, especially since it looks like the event was outside. OK, I’m reaching here….

Lol. Do you work in PR? Cause that was a good one. A bit “reach-y”, but it works. 😉

  26. I’m quite positive GoT will win Best Drama Series, Best Supporting Actress and Best Directing (Mother’s Mercy) tonight!

  27. RosanaZugey,

Sophie dressed just fine. It does have a restaurant server look, reinforced by the clutch that looks like a table’s check. Still, looks good. Solid B for Sophie.

  28. Sean C.,

Yes I think its is possible for them to make a “compromise”. GoT will take the best drama and Mad Man the best writing.

If we are judging based on Emmy history I don’t think that Mad Man has many chances to win for the best drama.

  29. Ravyn,

if it’s any consolation, it’s been in the triple digits in some parts of the SF Bay Area. We even have a couple of 100+ readings in San Francisco today…and 90-95% of us have no A/C. 🙁

    RosanaZugey,

I think tall, slender women look great in pantsuits. I think it’s well-tailored, too. The shirt is a little overly frilly for my tastes, but the cuffs help mitigate it.

  30. I think GOT might have drama series on lockdown after seeing the creative awards. Lena’s got her work cut out to beat Hendricks and Aduba, but I hope she does!

  31. The drama guest actor winners prove the new voting format favors name recognition, which shifts the odds in the favor of Uzo and Christina.

  32. RosanaZugey: My comment was said in the context that a beautiful woman should be in beautiful clothes

Yeah… No, sorry. You lost me there. If she can wear whatever she wants, she can wear whatever she wants. There is no “should” about it. She should wear beautiful clothes because she is beautiful? Should ugly people wear ugly clothes? What are you even talking about? Don’t pay lip service to people’s freedom to dress however they want if you don’t actually believe it.

    mau,

Oh that would be so fun. Hopefully it happens. But who I’m kidding: If Game of Thrones wins, they’ll just say the Emmys are meaningless and the voters are just a bunch of hacks; and if it loses, they will say “No wonder! The season was terrible!”. There is no winning on this.

  33. the outfits colours and contours look different and pleasant under natural light. The bleaching paparazzi camera light distorts a lot. For a tea party they look suitable.

  34. Cumsprite:
    RosanaZugey,

Sophie dressed just fine. It does have a restaurant server look, reinforced by the clutch that looks like a table’s check. Still, looks good. Solid B for Sophie.

Ack. I didn’t even notice the clutch and I don’t want to go back and look. I’m already not feeling it. Don’t want another reason to dislike.

…Also…is Maisie going to be there?

  35. Luka Nieto,

I am a rugged man so I wear rugged clothes. Holes in my tailshirts from twisting caps off beers and the elastic is popping out of my undies. Rugged.

  36. OT: Is anyone else getting videos over on the right of the screen, again? I am, and it’s freezing the whole page. 🙁

    dothrakian raven,

It was an interesting piece, and for something like the Met Ball it may have worked, but only if they could have figured out a way to not make it look like she had a dead swam wrapped around her neck. The “dead swan wrapped around neck” effect is what made it hideous, to me.

  37. Luka Nieto: Oh that would be so fun. Hopefully it happens. But who I’m kidding; they’ll just say the Emmys are meaningless and the voters are just a bunch of hacks; and if Game of Thrones loses, they will say “No wonder! The season was terrible!”. There is no winning on this.

Look at it this way, or, look at it however you want, but this is how I’m going to look at it: If GOT wins, when George expresses his happiness over it, they’ll say he’s lying to be diplomatic, or whatever. If GOT loses, and George expresses disappointment, they’ll say he’s lying to be diplomatic. Either way, they’ll be calling Martin, the writer they’re supposedly trying to defend with all their vitriol about the show, a liar. Nice, huh?

  38. Sean C.,

I would be quite happy if the awards played out that way!
I could handle Moss or Hendricks getting a win as well, but like you I think Davis is most likely to take her category and I will not root against Headey and jinx her! XD

I may not have loved her performance as Cersei the first few seasons, but she has
won me over the last couple years!

mau: If GoT wins tonight westeors.org, tumblr and Reddit ASOIF will together perform a hara-kiri.

    We can dream! XD

  39. Luka Nieto: Yeah… No, sorry. You lost me there. If she can wear whatever she wants, she can wear whatever she wants. There is no “should” about it. She should wear beautiful clothes because she is beautiful? Should ugly people wear ugly clothes? What are you even talking about? Don’t pay lip service to “everyone can wear whatever they want!” if you don’t actually believe it.

…Are you in an argumentative mood or something? Like…do I have to ACTUALLY engage in this argument with you? Is this serious? Can I at least go check on the Eagles/Cowboys score first?

  40. Luka Nieto:
Oh that would be so fun. Hopefully it happens. But who I’m kidding; they’ll just say the Emmys are meaningless and the voters are just a bunch of hacks; and if Game of Thrones loses, they will say “No wonder! The season was terrible!”. There is no winning on this.

They will say that, but deep down in their miserably souls, they will loose their shits. And people who are hating and suffering because of other’s success, deserve to suffer. And they will suffer, no mater how hard they will try to rationalize that.

Can you imagine? GRRM standing on that stage, together with D&D, praising this horrible fan fiction.

Only Alex Graves on the stage tonight could make them feel worse. LoL

And GoT will take that award. This year, next year, whenever.

  41. Can you imagine Linda’s face if GOT wins drama series, and most of all if her most hated human, Lena, wins supporting actress? lolol… Her twitter shud be entertaining

  42. mau,

The current record is 9, held by Season 1 of The West Wing. The usual caveats for award shows apply, e.g., there are more Emmy awards to win now than in the past.

For instance, Hill Street Blues won eight Emmys for its debut season in 1982 and was the prior holder of the “most Emmys in one season” record before The West Wing. You can debate whether it would have won an Emmy for Best Casting had that award existed at the time — indeed, the casting award debuted in 2000 and was won by The West Wing, which is what allowed it to break Hill Street Blues‘ record in the first place.

  43. Why does Linda hate Lena?

I really want GoT to take the best drama series award tonight even though I absolutely adore Mad Men. They’ve had their time with 4 best drama wins and although I enjoyed the last season, it wasn’t as strong as it could have been.

  44. HelloThere,

And worst episode ever (S5E10) wins the best directing?

Where the book purists’ favorite Stannis the Mannis was killed? Where LSH didn’t appear again? Where there was no Pink letter?

I would be like watching book purists reaction more than 10 years ago when horrible fan fiction LotR took all the Oscars.

  45. mau,

It’s either 9 or 10 I think.. West Wing did it back in 2000 or 2001, right?
GOT could win Outstanding Drama and Outstanding Guest Actress maybe?
    Here’s hoping!

  46. AryaArya: Why does Linda hate Lena?

Generally, because Linda is a hateful person.

Specifically, because she doesn’t like Headey’s portrayal of Cersei… a dislike for which she has insulted the actress many, many times.

  47. Carice and Gwen look stunning IMO. Sophie not so much, maybe the airline lost her luggage on the way over and she had nothing else to wear, or maybe she just got off the plane and didn’t have time to change. I’ll bet she’ll be stunning for the ceremony tonight though.

  48. Fuck the awards. What is Maisie Williams wearing?

Also, Carice Van Houten knows how to dress. Not sure about the nail color or the shoes, but she looks great.

  49. Darquemode,

Guest Actress was handed out at the prior ceremony. It (bafflingly) went to Margo Martindale for The Americans, in a result that clearly indicated the voters had not actually watched the episodes in question.

  50. Why are people here so harsh about how the women of the show dress? :/

    mau,

As a useless nerd, I feel insulted to be in any way compared to Linda 😛

  51. There is what appears to be a script in Emilia’s hand…. Who can zoom in and read it?! My phone is way too s#!tty to read it.

  52. AryaArya,

Because Lena has dared to change the character slightly from Martin’s novels, and give her a bit more depth, and gets regular praise for making the character better…. That makes her insanely bitter.

  53. Sean C.,

    Oh D’uh!
I knew that, but I was just looking over a list of nominees from an old link (before the awards were given out) and forgot. I was not thinking as I was considering! XD
    …. C’est la vie.

  54. HelloThere,

Indeed. There is no way to win here: When a character’s journey is simplified, D&D are white-washing them (e.g. Tyrion in ADWD; we shall all miss his rapey thoughts!) When characters are given a more complex moral and emotional dimension (e.g. Cersei; and most tertiary characters), turning into truly three-dimensional people… somehow, they are white-washing them, too.

It all boils down to “Don’t change anything!”, as usual.

    mau,

I don’t know about that, but I appreciate that you would think so! 😛

  55. Luka Nieto:
Why are people here so harsh about how the women of the show dress? :/

Because the men haven’t been pictured yet. I am lying in the tall grass for Mr. Harrington.

  56. mau,

To be fair it’s perfectly acceptable to not like an actor’s portrayal of a character. But 1) There is no excuse for such vitriol; 2) Just because she doesn’t match Linda’s interpretation of the character doesn’t mean that it doesn’t match the show runners/other people. To assume the characters have to meet her own interpretation is extremely arrogant.

  57. Thanks for all the answers guys re Linda and Lena. I admit to not taking any notice of Linda and Elio over the years.

    Go GoT! Go Lena!

  58. Luka Nieto,

Yes. When characters are better persons that in the books they are bad characters and white-washed (Tyrion, Cersei, Tywin,..), when they are darker persons than in the books (Stannis, Ellaria, Jaime…) D&D has committed character assassination and they are bad characters.

    Change from the books=bad writing

  59. Why did Gwendoline think sewing twin bedsheets together at two points and throwing it over her head to go to the BAFTA party was a good idea?

  60. Jeb:
    mau,

I think show Cersei is better than book Cersei not only because I think Lena CRUSHES her performance of her, but also because I think she’s more complex in the show. There are moments where you can genuinely “feel” for and understand show Cersei. I never felt that way about Book Cersei.

  61. mau,

One of the smartest things the show did was ADD scenes of Cersei in S1. I recall she was barely a prescence in the first book.

  62. RosanaZugey,

She was in black pants and a vest, earlier. Only her top was white…unless what I thought was black wasn’t.

    AryaArya,

I’m glad you asked that question, because I’ve always wondered why she abhors Lena so much. I was hoping it was for a reason like…oh, I don’t know, widely differing views on a subject of actual import, not “I don’t like how she plays the character.” That’s the reason she’s so outspokenly vile regarding Lena? Lovely.

I keep trying to find reasons to not think so little of her…not to see her only as verbally abusive with phenomenally thin skin (which would also make her a hypocrite).

  63. aiad:
    R’hllor saves me
    Carice is literally perfect

Look at the lips. Look at the nails. Look at the shoes. Something’s off, I think. Can’t put my finger on it.

  64. Clob,

I’m dependent on pictures. While the awards broadcast at 5pm out here (I’m on the west coast), the red carpet coverage doesn’t start until, like, 6:30 or 7:00…not to mention the red carpet is on E!, which I’d only watch with the sound off, lest I start throwing things at the tv telling it to STFU.

  65. Even though I want GOT to win drama series,
    Im really rooting for Lena…

Been wanting her to get recognition since season 1,

  66. Sean C.,

While very practical, I’m not a big fan of pockets on dresses. That said, I think Maise pulls it off. I think Gwendoline’s red carpet dress looks great, too, and is a vast improvement over the tea-party dress.

  67. Arkash,

They aren’t in the same category, are they? Tatiana must be Lead Actress, right? Lena Headey is in the Supporting Actress category.

  68. Luka Nieto:
    Arkash,

They aren’t in the same category, are they? Tatiana must be Lead Actress, right? Lena Headey is in the Supporting Actress category.

Oh yeah, you’re totally right ! My bad ! I take down what I said ! Go Lena then !

  69. Nymeria Warrior Queen,

Agreed!! I didn’t mind Sophie’s Brit take on Annie Hall at the Tea (70’s are in, after all) but that thing on Gwendoline at the Tea looks like a polyester tablecloth with safety pins at the shoulders! She is gorgeous tonight, though.

And can we take just a minute to appreciate Maisie’s penguin love? That clutch is da bomb! Lots of cool clutches there tonight.

Hope GRRM has the happiest of birthdays by GoT winning it all! And that Linda’s head explodes! 😉

  70. Luka Nieto:
    RosanaZugey,

It’s a great distraction, isn’t it? A marvellous tool against reporters asking innane questions about what the actors are wearing.

…unless they ask inane questions about who made the purse. 😉

  71. Ashara D,

    Well met, Lady Dayne!

I adore Maise’s spirit (not to sound all woo-woo, or anything…hahaha).
Yep, what a fantastic Name-Day present that would be for GRRM.

  72. Order awards will be announced:

I would be like watching book purists reaction more than 10 years ago when horrible fan fiction LotR took all the Oscars.

Do you hate the books or something?

Lol I love the show AND the books. I started reading the books after watching season 1-3 last year. Even though I love the show, I think Mother’s Mercy really did suffer from some bad writing. Come on, bad pussy? Myrcella’s sudden demise? That Brienne speech to Stannis before she killed him? Renly was never the king. He was a usurper. Plus changing Jon’s last word to “Olly?” Plus they didn’t show any of the Battle of Winterfell. I was hoping for the best but it really missed the mark. All the other finales were great.

Lol some of that episode was fine, but it was my least favorite episode of season 5. Everything else in the season was, more or less, really good. I think next season will be even better.

Anyway, it’s possible to love the books and the show. Do you dislike the books or something?

    Happy Name Day, George!!!!!!!

  74. Yeeehhh, GoT got several awards in addition to the technical ones!!!
I’m happy it got the writing and best drama series award. Sadly Lena Heady did not get hers. And quite frankly, I was as surprised as Peter Dinklage with his…
