Sure, you could send your mail by raven, but these days it’s much quicker to use the post office. If you still want a bit of a Westerosi feel to paying a gas bill or sending a birthday card, however, then the series of Game of Thrones stamps to be released by the British Royal Mail service should suffice.

Thrones will join the ranks of such iconic franchises to get their own stamps as Star Wars and Doctor Who with the release of the 15 stamps on January 23. The Royal Mail cites the “significant British contribution to the production” of Thrones, including a predominantly British and Irish cast and filming of the series at Titanic Studios in Belfast, the Linen Hill Film Studio in Banbridge and on location elsewhere in Northern Ireland, with additional filming in Scotland, as just some of the reasons to commemorate the award-winning series.

The stamps depict “photographic representations of central characters from across all seven seasons,” according to Royal Mail, with each stamp featuring an individual character and a montage of related images, such as Dany’s conquering of Meereen. “The result is a set of ten bespoke images that embody the crux of each character’s story,” the Royal Mail says.

Characters with their own stamps are Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Jon Snow (Kit Harrington), Eddard Stark (Sean Bean), Olenna Tyrell (Diana Rigg), Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance), Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

The stamp series also will include five non-human characters, including giants, dragons, the Night King and White Walkers, the Iron Throne and the beloved direwolves.

The stamps are available for pre-order now at the Royal Mail’s website, with the collection available online and from 7,000 Post Office branches beginning January 23.

  1. These look beautiful! Diana Rigg’s got her own stamp. Arya + Needle + Titan of Braavos. Tyrion + Blackwater blowing up!

Gotta see if Royal Mail will ship to U.S.

GoT stamps SHOULD have been a “joint issue” with the U.S. Postal Service. In October, USPS did a joint issue with Canada of “The History of Hockey” stamps. In 2005, USPS did a joint issue with Sweden of Greta Garbo stamps.

  2. Wait….

“The stamp series also will include five non-human characters, including… the beloved direwolves.”

    ❗️‼️⚠️❗️

    Must…get…stamps..

  3. This is really cool. But, you know that 10,000 years in the future, conspiracy theorists with swear that was history and that there were dragons on the earth; that is, if we’re not annihilated by nuclear buttons first.

    Happy New Year!

  4. Stormborn:
I’d prefer Robert or Joffrey Baratheon over Olenna Tyrell.

    I would’ve liked a Sandor Clegane stamp.

I’d like to think the Royal Mail considered a Hound stamp, until some intuitive staff member realized that postal customers would write on their envelopes under the stamp:

    “F*ck the Queen”

  5. Bring Cersei’s wig back!

Get rid of Jon’s man bun and get back to the long hair

Tyrion hasn’t acted the same since he was in King’s Landing. He acts much more stuffy now. Bring back the fun Tyrion!

I miss Tywin’s presence on the show

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming

  6. Well, now we know where Ghost has been the last two seasons….

Posing for an awesome postage stamp!

  7. Stormborn,

In the context of the HBO show, I would argue Olenna is just as important as those 2. Though I would’ve put Margaery, Robb, or Cat

  8. Olenna and Tywin were likely included (and I’m very glad they were, especially Olenna) because the actors that play them are popular and especially highly regarded in Britain. They are also both fabulous characters who embody the ‘Game of Thrones’!

  9. Erica: Just register on their site…link in article.

Alas, I tried. The site wouldn’t accept my zip code as a postal code.
I’ll have to recruit some help from my 9 year old computer whiz nephew…

  10. I will not quibble about the Arya stamp taking an image of Arya practicing water dancing (and getting mocked by Sandor) in S4, and transplanting it into a S5 or S6 Braavos background.

  11. These stamps have obvious favoritism bias…those extra five in the set should’ve gone to Bran, Theon, Robb, Catelyn, and/or Jorah, Varys/LF, or the Hound.

  12. There is such a lot to choose from and I can’t decide which set to buy. They are sooooo beautiful. Ohhh yes Mr Derp bring back Jon’s lucious locks, I live in hope every series😚

  13. Just as an aside: If you want to buy these as an investment (and I wouldn’t, because everyone in the world is going to buy these things by the metric ton) just buy the plain sheets and put them away intact.

First-day covers are nice, but harder to display and protect. They also have value, but again – the market is going to be flooded so … yeah.

The rest is money-grab nonsense stuff. If you like how they look, that’s fine, but don’t expect your kids to go to college on the value of your GoT stamp thingy.

  14. Bravo, Royal Mail. An icon is an icon is an icon to the 15th degree. The choices seem appropriate, though considering what Bran is likely to achieve in S8, he would have been more representative than giants. Ned’s remembered once again (missing Sean Bean), and glad Olenna and Tywin got recognised too. I think Sandor deserves inclusion and maybe (cough, cough) Littlefinger, but…why look a gift horse in the mouth?

Clob, great idea about a poster.

  15. Pity I still don’t live in UK. I would have nipped into the PO and got a set of these 😉

Far too nice to stick on a letter to shove in the post! It would then get a post mark with a date stamped over it which would deface it!

I guess these stamps have been issued more as a collectors item than a postage stamp for every day use.

  16. Yeeesssss precioussssssss Oh my I have to have these. What? use them to mail letters? Ha! Keeping them….My fav is Arya Just a perfect shot with that sword play

  17. Ok, I registered, found the one I wanted (I thought it was 15 stamps, only see 10) put it in my cart and clicked on checkout. It takes me to my account information. Anyone know how to get through to pay?

  18. Congratulations to Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, Kit Harrington, Sean Bean, Diana Rigg, Charles Dance, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Emilia Clarke, who are now immortalized in philatelic glory.

Now I call on the U.S. Mint to put Rory McCann on a commemorative penny.

    Polliver: So, you got money?
Sandor: Not a penny. I’ll still take that chicken.

  19. Ten Bears,

It was doing that to me, and I’d ordered from them before. Make sure 1) your house number and street are all on Address Line 1, and 2) try using the two-letter abbreviation for your state. Do this for both mailing address and billing address. And use PayPal. A foreign charge trying to go through your credit card direct may be blocked until your bank verifies your number hasn’t been stolen.

Have you already created an account? You have to do that to check out.

  21. Oh, how cool are these! Though I’d prefer a poster over stamps, but I’m sure we’ll see that too.

And I’m going to be that person, it’s compulsory since people often misspell my name — but you spelled Kit Harington’s name wrong, it’s only one R in his surname. Not the end of the world, but considering the Golden Globes twitter had to delete and post a new announcement when they misspelled his name, I’d figure it matters somewhat.

  22. Sundae,

Mea culpa on my end too. In my 1:04 AM comment congratulating the actors, I cut and pasted their names from the text – thereby perpetuating the misspelling of Kit’s last name.

Right: not the end of the world, and far be it for me to claim the mantle of Spelling Czar from Stannis, the One True Proofreader.

Also, you wrote: ”And I’m going to be that person, it’s compulsory since people often misspell my name…”. People not only often misspell my name, but mispronounce it so it sounds like a feminine hygiene product. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

    Spelling DOES matter.

  23. Sundae,

I think Royal Mail is offering a framed plaque of these GoT stamps, and their inclusion in a larger illustrated sheet. (Though the prices are in English pounds, they were so much higher than the stamps themselves that I didn’t even consider buying a framed plaque or a sheet to frame myself.)

It’s too bad USPS didn’t issue GoT stamps jointly with Royal Mail. USPS regularly offers souvenir posters of specialty stamps.

  24. NinaD,

Yes I did, in fact it appeared as soon as I got back on the site this morning. Paying on paypal might be just the thing, Ill try that.

  25. Whats the difference between Game of Thrones™ Stamp Set and Game of Thrones™ Character Stamp Set. Prices are similar

And yeah whats up with no Theon? strange

  26. ash,

I have ordered a stamp set which includes 15 stamps; 10 character stamps ie Jon Snow and Danearys + 5 stamps which include non – human characters ie Direwolves and dragons. They appear to come in 2 separate sets.

  27. ash,
I ordered the Presentaion Pack which co ntaines the stamps I mentioned. If you order separately it’s the Character set and Stamp Sheet set. The PP is £10.50 but comes in an envelope sort of thing. Separately they are £10.15 . I hope that helps.

  28. ash,

I got lost in account settings at one point. Wound up going back to the main site, clicking on a GoT offering just to see my cart again. Hopefully you got your order processed.

  29. I got the Character Stamp Set:
    • All 10 Special Stamps presented on a stunning presentation card, which includes the Game of Thrones logo and astrolabe design overlaying the Narrow Sea divide.
    • The stamps are protected by clear plastic strips to keep them in perfect condition.

    and

the Stamp Sheet Souvenir (non-personalized/without a First Day cover):
•The complete stamp sheet[non-human characters], affixed to a First Day Envelope and cancelled with a bespoke handstamp … with exclusive Hand of the King design and featured Belfast location
•An exclusively designed envelope, featuring a unique astrolabe design, customised with the series logo and house sigils
•An illustrated information card, featuring an overview of the Game of Thrones TV series

  30. Ten Bears:

People not only often misspell my name, but mispronounce it so it sounds like a feminine hygiene product. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

So here I am, at 10:30 PST, having consumed a goblet or two of Dornish red, thinking to myself… “Tampon? Pad? Douche? Bidet? Diluted apple-cider vinegar? What could his name possibly be?”

  31. There have been some UK stamps with Welsh dragons and Noggin the Nog dragons previously and someone pointed out there had been a stamp with Margaret Thatcher who some folk called the dragon lady. The GoT stamps do look good though.

  32. Wolfish: So here I am, at 10:30 PST, having consumed a goblet or two of Dornish red, thinking to myself… “Tampon? Pad? Douche? Bidet? Diluted apple-cider vinegar? What could his name possibly be?”

    Massengill?

Last I heard, according to federal law you have to be deceased (or fictional) to have your likeness put on a US stamp. So a joint issue would have to use artists’ renditions of the ASoIaF/GoT characters, rather than photos of the actors. (Not that I’d mind; I actually think that I’d like that better.)

  34. Firannion: Last I heard, according to federal law you have to be deceased (or fictional) to have your likeness put on a US stamp.

This is no longer true. The USPS ditched the “you gotta be dead” requirement several years ago. The USPS accepts “nominations” from the public. Since stamps are supposed to honor contributions to society (e.g.., culture, science, medicine), I have submitted – thus far without success – recommendations of:

    Toni Basil; and
    Clint Eastwood

By the way: artists’ renditions of characters as you suggested are just fine. The USPS did that with Star Wars stamps several years ago. The artists’ depictions of the characters look just like the actors.

  35. I’ll just catalogue my nerdness by saying that despite feeling a bit unwell and it being a horrible damp morning I went out and bought the Presentation Pack this morning…

    Nice!
