You win some, you lose some. It’s important to remember the ups and downs, the successes and failures, of the creative process.
The Super Bowl has become just as much about commercials as it is about football. And whenever the there’s a recap of great Super Bowl commercials the “1984” Apple spot is usually mentioned. The one that Lee Chow of Chiat/Day first doodled of a guy watching Big Brother on TV when a girl burst in with a baseball bat and smashes the screen. Here’s how the finished version evolved:
The idea worked.
“In 1983 Apple cofounder Steve Jobs had clipped an article about how Star Wars was marketed to seem like a spontaneous hit when its success was actually meticulously orchestrated. Jobs wanted that lightning to strike again…Almost 100 million viewers—46 percent of American households—watched the Apple’s visually stunning tease. The Monday after, 200,000 consumers flocked to dealers to view the Mac, and 72,000 bought one in the first 100 days, exceeding Apple’s goals by 50 percent.”
Bernice Kanner
The Super Bowl of Advertising
What’s less remembered is the next year (1985) when Apple came back with the $600,000 spot “Lemmings” which according to Kanner’s book, not only fell short of the 1984 spot but was followed an Apple sales slump, followed by six factories being shuttered, a cut of employees by 20%, and the firing of Chiat/Day and Jobs. Apple did not return to Super Bowl advertising for 14 years.
