I know there have been a lot of posts here about the Craig Macfie fatality. But if you are interested in this case, I would call your attention to a pair of nicely reported stories in the Oregon Daily Emerald: one by Colton Totland on Macfie; and one by Becky Metrick on Patrick Compton, the motorist who is charged with hitting Macfie. They have some new details about the events leading up to the collision and comments from a student who was friends with both of them.

It seems like it would be good for somebody to do some light give-aways on campus. How do they fund the big ones in Portland?
Thanks, Kevin, for the link. I see that the article also reports that one of Macfie’s close friends say he didn’t have lights on his bike. And while I’m all for lights when riding at night, I do harbor some doubts that it would have made a difference in this case. I have some other thoughts about riding late at night — hope to get a post up in the next few days.
Here is the link to an interactive map of traffic fatalities in the US over the last decade. It shows motor vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, and pedestrian fatalities with different symbols, and it’s a bit eerie to see people about whom we read, in locations we know, reduced to a symbol on a map.
