CRL Associates for Colorado Biz

Last month I got  the chance to photograph Maria Garcia Berry of CRL Associates here in Denver. She has been involved in all sorts of big projects here in Colorado, and is also on the Board of Trustees at Metro State here in Denver. So it was fun getting to chat with her for a few minutes and get her opinions on a few things.

As with most business portraits I do, we usually end up in a board room, with only a few minutes to work with. This one was no exception. Unfortunately, working with boardrooms with one long table and a bunch of chairs is something I’ve become accustomed to working with on tight schedules and limited locations. So I’ve worked out a pretty quick and simple lighting solution for most of them, that gives me a good clean light and nice portrait while working with the less then ideal backdrop.

Lighting Setup

I use my main lights with a large softbox placed about 45 degrees to the left or the right of the subject, and put a rim light behind and to the side of the subject. A quick simple two light set up that allows me to get the light quality I need, yet is relatively simple to set up and tear down in a hurry.  The shot published was lit the same way as shown above, but just with a different background other then the image below out the window.

I think my new goal for the next few business portraits now that summer is here is to get them outside. It can be hard sometimes to get the time or to arrange it, but I am definitely going to try to get out of these board rooms.
