When dogs end up at animal shelters, staff working at those shelters are often required to guess what breed it might be based solely on its appearance. Recent studies have shown, however, that visual dog breed assessment at shelters is often inaccurate. Dr. Julie Levy, a shelter medicine professor, will discuss what’s involved in dog breed identification, possible consequences that can result for dogs inaccurately labeled, and why behavioral assessment is a better indicator of the type of pet an animal will be.
