10 Thoughts for Friday

1) Any recruiters out there with experience using Entelo or TalentBin? What are the pros and cons of both of them? Which do you like better? I asked the same question on Quora.

2. Live in DC? Check out Cause, a new philanthropub opening soon. According to Glittarazzi, “Customers will visit Cause to drink and be merry. The money that the bar makes will pay the rent, staff and charity. Different causes will be selected every quarter and customers will get to pick which one they want their money to go towards.”

3. Lifehacker recommends that you look at two lists every morning: a to do list and an avoid list. I’ve recently started doing the same thing to remind myself to not mindlessly look at Twitter, Google Reader, my blog stats, etc throughout the day {only in the morning!}.

4. Here is what I had planned to meet during my “cleaning out the freezer & pantry week.” Here’s what I actually ate: corn taco tostadas; Mexican casserole from the freezer; a hot dog with Indian-spiced onion relish {found it on Edible Mosaic- yum!}, sushi, and other miscellaneous stuff! But I did make a dent in the freezer mess.

5. I think I finally got down my phrasing for when someone I don’t know connects with me on LinkedIn: “Hi x, Thank you for the invitation to connect on LinkedIn! I wanted to check in and see what you were interested in connecting about since I don’t believe we’ve met in person.  Thank you and take care, Cristina.” What do you think?

6. Want to find fun Raleigh events? First, follow the Scintillating Simplicity calendar! But you can also subscribe to the Visit Raleigh Events RSS Feed in your feed reader {I obviously love Google Reader!}.

7. I love the website 1000 Awesome Things and the latest two posts made me laugh: #996 Opening and sniffing a pack of tennis balls and #997: Locking people out of the car and pretending to drive away {my sister and I do this more than I think is normal for 20-somethings}.

8. I absolutely love The Girl Effect, an amazing YouTube video! In related news, apparently this month’s Fast Company is all about female social entrepreneurs! Need to pick up a copy…

9. You’ve no doubt seen the article in the Atlantic, “Why Women Can’t Have It All.” Since the piece came out, there’s been a ton of responses, like “Does Anyone Really Need to Have It All?” and “Why Women Shouldn’t Want to Have It All” and “How Women (and Men) Can Have It All” and lastly, “Men Can’t Have It All Either.” Whew! That’s a lot of conflicting opinions. What do you think? I feel a blog post coming on…

10. And finally, I’m considering making a 23 New Things List to start on my upcoming 23rd birthday, a la Sarah of Yes and Yes. Any suggestions for what I should put on it?

  1. Cristina, I love this post!
First, the idea of a philanthropub is amazing and I sort of can’t believe we don’t have one in Raleigh yet… Wheels turning in my head right now.
Second, The Girl Effect is so great and I’m glad it’s making waves. We watched it in one of my anti-human trafficking activist trainings a few weeks ago. Awesome!
Lots of other good stuff in there, but this comment is already too long 🙂 Happy (almost) weekend!

  2. Commented before, but, chasing butterflies, I flitted off and forgot to right click. So, here goes – accept the LinkedIn invites. Nearly never will you be connected to by a weirdo – and if you are, it doesn’t reflect on you. LinkedIn is simply about building your network, sharing ideas, and making new business acquaintances, when things work out. If you are in a hurry, accept the connection, and get to know the person better later. There are very few spammy linkers on linked in, in my experience, and the more connections, theoretically, the better.

With Facebook and Twitter – be more cautious – this is where I might use your response, to vet your new connections – it happens somewhat rarely, but I’ve been asked to friend or follow creatures who, when I checked out where they were from, would not make good friends or followers – looked as if they were spamming, looking for folks to check out their prurient sites. Not an impression you would want to encourage. You want your FB friends to actually be friends (or, I do). Real friends won’t post things which are likely to embarrass you or to create bad impressions in your professional community, should that community ever overlap your FB profile. So, take a bit more care with them, I’ve recently thought, I should have had two FB profiles – one for silly things like entering contests, liking Macy’s or Oscar Mayer, or the like, and one for life. Wish I’d thought of it earlier. I have multiple twitter identities, because my life has multiple segments, some of which would be of no interest to one another. So, have fun with your delightful blog, and enjoy the world of social media!

    • Thanks so much for the in-depth comment, Vicki!
I absolutely agree with you on Facebook. I feel like that’s the place I can most be my 22 year old silly self 🙂
I actually had a weird experience with LinkedIn that changed my perspective a bit. I was added by an individual who was connected to others that I know and trust. Turns out, he wanted me to join his pyramid scheme! I don’t think I would have been so trusting if I hadn’t seen that others I knew were connected to him (lesson learned!). Hence my reasoning for being more cautious in accepting invites.
I see Twitter as a very open platform (see my post on great things that have come from Twitter!). That being said, I don’t follow someone back unless I’m actually interested in their content.
All part of a very interesting discussion on how people interact across different social media platforms!
      Thanks again 🙂
