The base steps for Rooting are these:

  2. Download Universal Androot.
  3. Attach your Android phone to your USB port
  4. Copy Universal Androot to your phone’s SD card
  5. Run APK installer
  6. Tap the Univeral Androot.apk file to install
  7. Start the Androot app

Archos, APK installer and Rooting

APK installer is not required on the Archos Tablets, as I learned when working with “Files” on the Archos tablet. Tapping the .apk file will start and install it. Rooting the Archos Tables

After rooting

After Rooting your phone, you can:

  1. Start using your phone for Tethering (there are applications that claim to be able to do it without rooting as well)
  2. Find and copy the downloaded .apk files (Android executables) and move them to other devices using RootExplorer
  3. Install optimized versions of the OS on your device like the CyangenMod (only for a limited set of phones – read the list carefully on the CyangenMod) offering:
    1. Speed optimization – due to the removal of vendorware – stuff you do not need, but is running in the background anyway
    2. Multi-touch – via the CyangenMod
    3. Direct access to your USB-port – and the ability to do serial communication to other devices like Arduino boards as a Host.
    4. Relocate your .apk files to the SD-card – using a Shell-script referred to as Apps2SD allowing you to clear up local space and can store and run more applications
  4. Backup your .apk files to an FTP server – (see product page here) to share them between devices (free applications mostly – licenced / bought might be bound to your machine)
  5. Backup the files on your phone, including your SMSes –
