I bet you have vowed to start being healthy this year, this month, or this week, but somehow that rarely ever happens. How many of your resolutions have actually become habits?
Most people don’t stick to their resolutions and as a result, they never pick up any healthy habits. The world is full of people who don’t stick to their diet, stop going to the gym, and settle for eating takeout and junk food.
How to stick to healthy habits
Sometimes, the problem is we try to do too many things at once. We want to get up earlier, start a diet, go to the gym, be more present, more mindful, and more productive all the same time. What happens is we get overwhelmed and give up on trying to accomplish anything. It’s a bad strategy.
A better way is to focus on achieving only one thing at a time. Think of one thing you can change in your daily routine and concentrate on doing that. Once you’ve picked up this new habit, move on to the next one.
How I turned resolutions into habits
This approach has worked wonders for me.
Six years ago, I was carrying too much extra weight and I was eating a lot of processed food, junk, and takeout. During a routine blood test, my glucose level came out higher than it should be. Sadly, I’m prone to diabetes due to my family history, so this result terrified.
At that moment, I decided to start working out. I focused on getting up an hour earlier to get some exercise. I didn’t really worry about my diet, all I thought about was exercising.
It was hard at first, but exercise slowly became a part of my daily routine. I started feeling better and more motivated, so I decided to start eating healthier.
The rest is history. I’ve been exercising every single day for 6 years, and I turned my eating habits around. No more junk and processed food for me! My glucose level is normal and I’m fitter than ever before. My life has changed completely and all because I decided to start one healthy habit.
Healthy habits you can start today
Getting fit and healthy is not impossible. Just pick just thing from this list and start doing it today!

Take 20 minutes to eat a healthy, nutritious meal today.

-

-

These are all great ideas. I also like one tip I was given. Allow failure from time to time. Life happens. If you don’t you will burn out and never accomplish the goals you wish to accomplish.

I love how you say to try those things just for “today,” because that’s the way to start! Not to get overwhelmed with it ALL right off the bat!

Exactly! Overwhelm is one of the main reasons why a lot of healthy resolutions get thrown out the window.

I definitely need more sleep! I work constantly, and have a hard time putting away the laptop while trying to get my new website launched. It seems there aren’t enough hours in the day since I started working on this project!
Reading your post made me acknowledge how stressed I have felt lately. I think Sunday will be my decompress day 🙂
Thanks for the reality check!

Getting enough sleep is also my biggest problem. I think it’s a matter of prioritizing health over work, but that’s easier said than done!

I would like to hear what do you think about intermittent fasting?

I recently started doing that because my health coach suggested it. I must say I’ve yet to see results, but I’ve read that intermittent fasting is useful for weight loss.

I know taking one step at a time is healthier and works for most people like you said but sadly Im more of all-or-nothing kind of girl. I will do 100% and feel intantly better, this works better for my type A personality lol.

I totally agree with you Fabi. Years ago I lost 70 pounds and I did it by creating my own formula for success honestly. I didn’t follow a regimented diet I simply ate better and worked out 5 days a week and tried everything, I believe its the only way to figure out what works for you, exercise isn’t a one size fits all.

So true! Nothing is a one-size-fits-all. I also a ton of weight (50 pounds) by creating my own formula. The best advice is to find what works for you and do it.
