s letter motifSo this week focused on food, to a large extent. We’re still hoping to have an event in February (not official, and by invitation, just a feast) but we don’t have a solid date. The big event we were planning fell through because the site got rented out from under us. <sigh>

Anyway, progress was made on the largesse stuff, 12th Night clothing, herbs and several research projects, including Marcus’ wire-drawing, and then we had our feast on Sunday! Details and some of the recipes are below.

This week there’s no Metal on Tuesday, but Sewing will run from 3-9 on Thursday and the Herbs Bunch will meet on Saturday at 11am.

Sunday is the big special event! The Dyes and Dyeing Workshop is this Sunday! Full details are here: http://wp.me/P6tYq4-mJ clares dyes This is going to be fun! Cost is $5 for materials and it would be nice of you to put something in the donation can for gas. We will be continuing with projects during the rest of the afternoon.

Here is the direct Portfolio link which has all the past Project Day reports and various projects, original here:  https://housecapuchin.wordpress.com/portfolio/  and new one here:  https://housecapuchin2.wordpress.com/portfolio/

Early Week – We started with setting up to cut out some of the garb for 12th Night, but other than getting barely started on that, and a handful of pouches that Anja managed in the late afternoon on Monday, mostly what happened was getting things sorted out and put away! Marius got started on his wire drawing experiments, too. There’s going to be a new project page here: http://wp.me/p6tYq4-rV , but it’s not yet live.

…plus cheese research, must not forget the cheese…. links below….

blacksmith motifMetal Night didn’t get pix again. Marcus helm is welded together, but still needs some shaping. Ken has some kind of battery operated cutter that had Loren drooling.

Loren’s gorget still needs some work on the leather, but he’s been too busy to even think about it.

motif-sewing-pin-tomato1Sewing Time started and ended with pouches. Anja finally got the needlebook pattern set up and the needlebook/biscornu pattern for the tins made and started cutting out, since there weren’t a lot of customers that day. Sitting down with another House member who stopped by for a chat got some pages cut out, too. Progress! Some pouches happened when one of the sewing ladies stopped by and she learned about how to turn them.

plant hanging herb motifHerb Bunch – …spent two hours getting small dry stuff off the stems and “de-sticked” so that it can be used. We did the lovage first, although Anja was working on thyme when the class got there. Once those were done we started in on the fennel, of which there’s a huge quantity. We needed the green weed for sausages for that project, plus dried blossoms, and the seeds will get used over the winter in candy and sauces. There’s likely to be enough to give some away, even!

Potluck Prep on Friday and Saturday evening – Anja & Loren have had a number of foods that they wanted to make up for themselves, plus a couple of recipes to try for the February Feast. Anja’s been tracking down and making some recipes from Apicius (the lentil dish and the chicken sauce both are, plus one of the Sunday sausages)

Project Day –
started with Anja cooking some cracked wheat for an Apicius sausage. After that we chopped leeks and added salt and cumin and then discovered that the ground pork was full of black flecks, so that got put on hold while sausage food motifLoren ran it back to the grocery store. It turned out that rather than ground pork it was seasoned sausage! …but the grocery made it right, replacing the stuff and refunding the balance. So by the time Marcus was there, 3 pounds of sausage were ready to form. Loren headed up to the house to pick up the rest of the feast food while Marcus and Anja finished up the other two pounds.

Apicius [64] ANOTHER SAUSAGE –  ALITER –  WASH SPELT AND COOK IT WITH STOCK. CUT THE FAT OF THE INTESTINES OR BELLY VERY FINE WITH LEEKS. MIX THIS WITH CHOPPED BACON AND FINELY CHOPPED FRESH PORK. CRUSH PEPPER, LOVAGE AND THREE EGGS AND MIX ALL IN THE MORTAR WITH PIGNOLIA NUTS AND WHOLE PEPPER, ADD BROTH, FILL CASINGS. PARBOIL SAUSAGE, FRY LIGHTLY, OR SERVE THEM BOILED

The actual recipe was 3 pounds of ground pork, 6 eggs. 1 cup of cracked wheat, 1 cup water, 2 leeks, splodge of prepared horseradish, shake of cumin.

…and Anja exclaimed after it was all done, “I forgot the nuts!!!” We made patties and did them “swimming” and they were tasty!

The other two recipes were pretty standard for the kind we’ve done before, but the fork mixing (Anja hates handling raw meat) left them falling apart in the wine as they were cooked.

The one pound was done as: 1 pound ground pork, splodge of horseradish, 1/2 pound white mushrooms (closer to 1/3)

The other pound was: 1 pound pork, dash of cumin, 1/2 pound crimini mushrooms

How did we miss getting pix of them cooking? Dang, they were tasty, but we all preferred the Apicius patties.

Castle Work motifOther things.… Loren was sanding and Marcus researching the laurel wreath headdresses. He thinks at least one was soldered. Anja was finishing pouches and working on needlebook pages and after we got into clothing for the feast, they got a pic of her. We ended up talking quite a bit about the Etruscan laurel wreath headgear.
