Sheffield Blitz Exhibition Is Open
A seven year campaign has finally come to fruition with the opening of the city’s first permanent Sheffield Blitz exhibition.
Last Friday, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Denise Fox, carried out the unveiling ceremony with local author Neil Anderson and Matthew Wakefield – head of the city’s National Emergency Services Museum which is the new home to the exhibition. The last surviving fire engine that fought the Blitz fires in December 1940 is amongst the scores of artefacts that make up the collection.
The exhibition contains scores of rare and original Blitz-related objects and photos, Second World War emergency vehicles, oral history recordings from survivors, film footage as well as the fire brigade’s original map of bomb sites across the city.
It has been created by Bill Bevan, inHeritage, and Matthew of NESM – along with dozens of museum volunteers who have built the gallery, restored vehicles and created object displays. Sheffield Blitz and Walkley Historians volunteers have helped record and transcribe the oral history interviews that appear in the exhibition.
