News bites: January 9, 2016

Jo In-sung, Jung Woo-sung

  • It’s too bad Im Soo-jung declined an offer to play the wife of Jo In-sung in The King, the film about a prosecutor (Jo) and his gangster friend who together will attempt to manipulate a powerful prosecutor sunbae. While the roles of Jo’s wife and neighborhood friend haven’t been filled yet, Jung Woo-sung is confirmed and currently negotiating contract details to play Jo’s sunbae. Both will play bad men, but one of them will be worse than the other. The King will be helmed by Han Jae-rim (The Face Reader) and filming begins at the end of this month. [Star News]
  • Your Wedding has been delayed for months, all because production has had trouble casting the male lead opposite Park Bo-young. Kang Haneul had been courted for the film last May but turned the role down, and now production is still searching for an actor in his late twenties to early thirties to be paired with Park. The chosen one will play a character who receives an invitation to attend the wedding of his first love, and as soon as the role’s been cast, filming will begin. Your Wedding will be the directorial debut of Lee Seok-geun, and the movie will be bankrolled and distributed by Lotte Entertainment. [Joongang]

  • Song Kang-ho, Bae Doo-na

  • Veteran Song Kang-ho is finalizing negotiations to play the lead in Taxi Driver (a working title). He’ll be reunited with director Jang Hoon (they worked together on 2010’s Secret Reunion) in the film about a taxi driver working in Gwangju in the late ’80s. Shoebox is handling the investment and distribution, and once casting is finished, pre-production will begin, with filming occurring in the latter half of the year. [Star News]
  • Bae Doo-na’s coming back for the second season of Netflix show Sense8, and fortunately, the streaming service recently launched in 130 additional countries (and has added Korean language support), which means that international fans will be able to watch as soon as the episodes drop in the States. [Osen]
  • A sports movie, with Yoo Ji-tae in it? I’m there. Lee Jung-hyun (The Family is Coming) is positively considering the female lead opposite Yoo in Split, a film about bowling. (Not a sport often highlighted in film, but who cares? Yoo. Ji. Tae!) [Joongang]

  • Wang Ji-won, Jin Gu, Lee Dong-hwi, Kim Sun-young, Park Yoo-hwan

  • The casting director for upcoming film One Line must be a tvN fan: First Im Shi-wan (Misaeng) agreed to headline, and in the last week the film has landed Wang Ji-won and Park Yoo-hwan (both of I Need Romance 3), and Lee Dong-hwi and Kim Sun-young (Salamander and Sun-woo’s mom, respectively, on Answer Me 1988). Wang will play Im’s partner in the insurance fraud scheme and a college buddy. A woman with brains and beauty, she’s the whole package. Park will also play Im’s friend, while Lee will be important to the large-scale scam and Kim will also have a fundamental role. Jin Gu (Falling For Innocence) has been cast as the mastermind behind the plan, responsible for recruiting college student Im and his buddies to carry out the caper. Filming on One Line will begin before the end of the month. [TV Report, Joongang, DongA, MBN]
  • The upcoming family drama from writer Kim Soo-hyun, Yes That’s How It Is, finally has an airdate — February 13 — which’ll mark the return of the earlier weekend drama timeslot on SBS. [My Daily]
  • Here’s some welcome news for Please, Mom fans: The popular weekender (which in recent weeks has recorded viewership ratings of over 33%) has been extended for another four episodes and will conclude on February 14. It will be followed by Five Kids, starring Ahn Jae-wook and So Yoo-jin (Pretty Man). [Joongang]

-Beauty Inside is not too bad it has it's cute moments but like almost every Korean movie it's cute in the beginning and then you get angst towards the end but not for too long.
-Sunny, it's pretty good
-My brilliant life
-A werewolf boy if you haven't seen it
-Speedy Scandal, with Park Bo-young pretty cute
-Twenty, but it can get pretty immature and has adult content that might not be for everyone, but it is pretty funny
That's all I can think off I tend to watch more action films

Congrats to Bae Do Na for scoring yet another international role. Her acting is subtle, but so striking I can spot her on the screen from any distance in any role. One of the best characters in 'Sense8'.

Sun and Wolfgang were the characters I disliked most (despite the fact that I really like both actors).

Wolfgang is a character-building mess who could have been an interesting character if the writers had made up their decision at some point.

Sun is a walking stereotype with no story of her own at all. And unfortunately, Bae Doona is not comfortable acting while speaking English. Max Riemelt's accent is just as bad as Bae's, but it doesn't affect his acting skills ...

Your Wedding's plot has been done over and over again. But I'm a sucker for that kind of angsty angst so I'm most likely checking it out(though it would be great without the first love part). Plus it has Park Bo Young. Can we have her reunite with Joong Ki? Aside from Penny Pinchers, I haven't seen him playing a normal person. :)

While reading the first part of the plot i was thinking about Yoo Seung Ho eary drama Operation Proposal...hope they'll find soon a lead,i'd love a reunion and a happy ending even more but i'd like to see maybe even Ji Chang Wook,as i know army will take him from us soon,i want one more project before that

Now, that's something rather impossible: JIS aaaand JWS together in a TV series. But, what if..? The dynamic would be unbelievable and 20 episodes might not be enough... :-)

Your Wedding Producer, look no other than Ji Chang Wook for Park Bo Young's leading man.
He's 30 this year, has great acting talent, versatile, can play romantic lead convincingly and already paired with Park Bo Young once in a MV and developed good chemistry.
He's busy now, but next month he'll (likely) be free and I think he could do one last movie before army.

They've reviewed movies in the past, sometimes they've had regular reviewers for a period of time.

Check the Movie Reviews archive:
http://www.dramabeans.com/category/movie-reviews/

I don't think they do it regularly, as unlike with dramas many people won't have watched the films and/or can't access them. Meaning, the recapping/commenting interaction that many people enjoy about Dramabeans isn't there.

There are however a good number of dedicated Korean movie reviews websites, including hangulcelluloid.com, modernkoreancinema.com, koreanfilm.org, hangukyeonghwa.com and init-scenes.blogspot.com – in addition to several Asia-focused review sites. I review Korean films too (alongside Japanese & other Asian films), but my blog will still be on hiatus for a few more months.

Hope this helps.

Jo In-sung&Jung Woo-sung together is all that's needed, they can ditch the female part all together.
And *LOL* so many exciting sports out there, and they choose bowling, how inspiring. But Yoo Ji-tae!

I've watched a whole j-drama about bowling just for the sake of one of the most handsome men I've ever laid my eyes on, Takeshi Kaneshiro and, apart from the obvious drooling all over, it was really interesting. I can imagine Yoo Ji-tae in a film about sports and I'm sure he can bring his personal acting gravitas in the project.

I was reminded of that J-drama (Golden Bowl) – a sports drama with romance – too when awcoconuts mentioned that it's not a sport often highlighted in film... but then the Japanese have tackled the most random sports (tumbling, male synchronised swimming, volleyball, fishing...) and also professions in their dramas/films/anime.

If anyone wants a warm-up for the film about bowling, Golden Bowl is most definitely worth a watch. Interesting characters (minus some of the clingy supporting characters) and especially well-matched lead actors whose characters you can totally cheer for, not just because of the chemistry but because the two really 'click' as persons (not something always see in rom-coms). There's plenty of bowling but it's actually really interesting – you learn a lot and actually makes you appreciate the sport in a way you wouldn't expect!

Takeshi Kaneshiro is a bonus.

You're right, @alua. The lead actors seem to communicate beautifully, with or without the bowling ball. Sure, some secondary characters and those, usually, odd teams in every episode were so cartoon-ish but that fantastic OST coming right from the '50s and that OTP's harmony made everything perfect for me (the "dead" fiancée was a bit over the top but it's a j-drama after all). I really learnt a lot about bowling moves while I was watching our "bonus". "Oui, madame"...

It's a very 'atmospheric' drama... the OST and even some of the ending credit images very much contribute to that. I thought there was a lot of humour – not just in the banter between the leads (which felt so real & was fantastic), but some of (recurring), slightly cartoonish secondary characters can be funny too. Little things, but they make the drama a fond memory. (I confess, when you mentioned it, I had to go and watch a few scenes.)

@alua,
