High School King of Savvy: Episode 3

Whether it’s physical training or presentations, Min-seok is stuck with PTs everywhere. Our double-identity hero is adjusting quite well to leading both lives, and his adaptable nature is proving to be a big advantage. Turns out, he’s pretty good at this whole workplace thing. But he’s not perfect, and he’s still young. There are barriers to break and keep when making connections with people, and Min-seok learns that not all is as it seems, with himself and those around him.

EPISODE 3 RECAP

Min-seok covers Soo-young’s mouth while desperately holding the stairwell door shut from Yoo-ah, who’s about to blow his cover. He gives staring Jin-woo a nervous laugh, but Jin-woo doesn’t seem to care about Soo-young being held hostage and just casually walks away.

On Min-seok’s order to shush, Soo-young holds her breath, and they listen for any sounds on the other side of the door. The sounds seem to have stopped, so Min-seok cautiously opens the door. He jumps back in surprise, but it’s only another employee, not Yoo-ah. Phew.

Thankfully, Yoo-ah has been caught by security and is dragged out of the building. Min-seok catches his breath but doesn’t explain anything to Soo-young, who’s dying of embarrassment.

The hockey game is on hold, as Min-seok isn’t there to face-off. He’s fiercely running to the game, barreling through construction barricades and pulling off his clothes. By the time he gets to the ice rink, the game is already over, and his team has lost 4-1.

Punishment time. The whole team suffers the consequences of Min-seok’s absence, and Coach reminds them that they have preliminaries for nationals next week and attendance will be strictly enforced. He gives Min-seok an extra word, threatening to kick him off the team if he has any more absences.

After Coach leaves, Min-seok attempts to apologize, but his sunbae is not amused. He’s punched in the face and warned that he could be kicked off before their coach gets a chance to. Better get your double-life straightened out.

Min-seok and his friends — JO DUK-HWAN (Kang Ki-young) and OH TAE-SUK (Lee Tae-hwan) — go to a Chinese restaurant afterwards, where Min-seok attends to his injury with a bag of ice while one of his friends digs into some jjambbong.

They’ve been friends for a while (“We’re together all the time, except for when we poop and sleep”), so they know something’s up. But Min-seok doesn’t give them a clear answer and walks out. Duk-hwan thinks he might be in slump and then smacks the Tae-suk for eating all the good food.

Min-seok stops by Dad’s cleaners, and the first thing Dad notices is his busted lip. He quickly covers it up by explaining that it was from practice and laments the impending doom that is practice hell week before prelims. Dad mentions that hyung sent in money, and Min-seok freaks out. “Hyung? When? From where? Germany?” He’s been regularly sending in money for the past eight years, so Dad finds Min-seok’s overreaction strange.

In his room, Min-seok thinks about the news. Since he just sent in the money, hyung must still be alive somewhere. He looks at his hyung’s picture and yells at him for smiling while he’s having a hard time. He puts the frame face-down but immediately puts it back up, telling hyung to hurry home. Aw.

Next thing we know, Min-seok’s playing a hockey game and — ace that he is — swiftly scores a goal. He looks to the crowd, expecting cheers, but they’re booing him. Suddenly, he’s in his work clothes, holding the hockey stick in a suit. The crowd throws something at his head, and the impact wakes him up.

It was just a dream, but for Min-seok, it felt too real. Dad barges in to wake him up, flailing a spoon around. And of course, Grandpa comes in a few seconds later, mimicking Dad. Min-seok reluctantly gets up and heads to school.

But only for a moment. As soon as he confirms his attendance, he sneaks out the window and runs off to work. A quick change of clothes and an elevator ride later, he’s ready for office work. Then back at school for hockey training. And repeat. It’s some impressive double-identity juggling but understandably tiring. He collapses as soon as he gets home, and Grandpa tries to poke him awake. Poke, poke.

Soo-young rushes into the building on the verge of tardiness but runs back behind a wall when she sees Jin-woo waiting for the elevator. She considers taking the stairs, but she convinces herself to walk up next to Jin-woo with a confident “Good morning!”… in her imagination. She’s still behind the wall giving herself a pep talk: “I’m a cool modern woman who doesn’t hold grudges and knows how to separate work from personal life.”

She walks towards Jin-woo telling herself to act natural, but she greets him with an awkward double hand wave. He doesn’t say anything and quietly waits for the elevator, but Soo-young isn’t done. She tries to explain the possible misunderstanding with what happened by the stairwell, but he cuts her off saying that he’s not interested enough to have such misunderstandings.

It’s a reminder for Soo-young that he’s not interested in her, and she silently boards the elevator. Just as the elevator is about to close, Min-seok squeezes in, and he boards the elevator of awkward and rejected pheromones.

Jin-woo compliments Min-seok’s tie, to which Min-seok says that it’s becoming a problem: The ladies at the office like him too much. Heh. Jin-woo gets off, leaving Min-seok to poke fun at Soo-young’s one-sided love.

He says that Jin-woo’s a handsome guy and asks if Soo-young thinks the same. Realizing his mistake, he says that he should’ve known to take the stairs instead of taking the elevator with them two. Min-seok says that he can tell Soo-young likes Jin-woo, but she completely denies it.

Min-seok agrees to play along with her claims and adds that he’s a little disappointed that she doesn’t show him some of that affection. They walk out of the elevator, and Soo-young trails behind Min-seok, insisting that she doesn’t like Jin-woo. But he continues to give her sarcastic replies: “Let’s just pretend that you don’t like him.”

When Min-seok arrives, the ladies enthusiastically greet him and one of the team members notifies him of a conference call. It’s clear that he has no idea what a conference call is, so Team Leader Kim jumps in to save his ass. He reminds Min-seok of all the “work” he has in his office and offers to take the call for him.

Soo-young hands out everyone’s one paper cup for the day, and while some complain, Grumpy compliments her efforts. At times like this, she seems quite organized and almost a neat freak, as she asks a team member to keep his feet off the tables.

Team Leader Kim sneaks into Min-seok’s office, where he’s doing push-ups. Min-seok asks him to knock, but he just scoffs at his illusion that he’s actually the retail team director. As Min-seok moves onto squats, Team Leader Kim tells him not to interfere with any actual work. Min-seok starts to argue, but he’s immediately shut down. Don’t take part; just sit there and secure the position.

Upset by his neglected opinion, Min-seok sits at his desk chair with a sulky pout. He tells Team Leader Kim that he won’t be at work Wednesday because of hockey prelims, but he’s ordered to come right back when the game is over.

Then Team Leader Kim reluctantly takes out a credit card, and Min-seok pounces. After a quick tug-of-war, he gets his hands on the Director’s Credit Card. He’s warned not to use it recklessly, but his eyes look like he’s just won the jackpot. Team Leader Kim looks at him nervously.

And rightly so, as Min-seok treats his whole team to lunch. Team Leader Kim quietly mumbles a warning to Min-seok through his teeth, and Min-seok’s obnoxious “Whaa?” makes him yell the warning, which he quickly covers up with a big laugh. Haha.

Min-seok’s friends are enjoying their no-practice good-weather day when Yoo-ah grabs them and takes them out to some barbecue, seemingly in a good mood. They devour the meat and thank her, but her expression suddenly changes. Tae-suk notices the change and nudges Duk-hwan: She would never just buy us food. What were we thinking?

Yoo-ah demands to know what’s going on with her Hubby. They have no idea and suggest that it could just be a slump, but Yoo-ah knows there’s more going on. She threatens to not pay for their meal, and that gets them to offer their help. She orders them to find out what’s going on with Min-seok within the next three days.

Min-seok sits through a meeting, where Jin-woo gives a presentation on his new shopping mall project. Jin-woo shows confidence in getting it through in the final competitive presentation for the project approval, but President Yoo expresses some doubts in its pretty ordinary merits. President Yoo hears Min-seok comment something and asks him to elaborate.

Next to him, Director Han quietly signals him to shut his mouth, but Min-seok nervously starts his commentary. “Everything multi-functional nowadays is the best. In sports, a multi-player is the best, and in games, a multi-tasker is the best. Therefore, the multi-space shopping mall should do well.” President Yoo approves of Min-seok’s commentary and compliments his speaking skills. He should be the one to give the final presentation this Wednesday.

Min-seok shakes his head, and the opposing Director Nam protests, but Jin-woo agrees. He wants to see Min-seok’s presentation skills as well and learn a couple things. And so the PT goes to Min-seok. Jin-woo looks pretty nonchalant about the whole thing until he gets back to his office. He’s visibly irritated and throws his folder at the wall. You mad, bro?

After the meeting, Min-seok, confused by the company’s lingo, asks Director Han what a PT is. The only PT he knows is physical training. He starts doing jumping jacks and asks, “It’s not this PT, right?” Haha.

Director Han and Team Leader Kim assemble in Min-seok’s office to figure out how to deal with this crisis. The director yells at Team Leader Kim, who relays the scolding to Min-seok. When he figures out what a PT is, Min-seok complains that he doesn’t like giving presentations and realizes that he has a hockey game that day. Team Leader Kim nervously glances at Director Han and orders Min-seok to come right to work after his morning hockey game to give a presentation in the afternoon.

Team Leader Kim tries to sneak out, saying that he has meetings all day, but Director Han yells at him to stay and prepare a Powerpoint presentation with Min-seok. Not understanding the urgency of the situation, Min-seok asks, “What’s a ppt?” That puts Director Han over the edge, and he stands slamming his head on the door.

They decide to make an action plan, but Min-seok tells them to plan elsewhere; this is his room. Team Leader Kim lifts his fist in frustration, and Director Han jumps onto the couch, squirming with anger. And of course Min-seok gives us an important observation: “Wow. He was flying. I saw it.” Bahaha.

Team Leader Kim asks if anyone on the team would be willing to create a Powerpoint presentation, and suddenly everyone is busy. The job eventually gets assigned to Soo-young, and she’s told to practice it with Min-seok when she’s done. She sighs while the rest of the ladies stew in jealousy, not having realized the project would get them face time with Min-seok.

Soo-young walks into Min-seok’s office with the completed presentation and again states that she does not like Jin-woo. Min-seok’s amused that she’s been thinking about clarifying that the whole day and quickly looks over the presentation notes.

She proceeds to go over the presentation, but Min-seok’s not interested. He plays with the laser pointer, aiming it on her face, and suggests that take a break. They just started, but he mentions their boss-subordinate relationship and she immediately agrees to his requests.

They try again, with Min-seok stumbling over the presentation language and Soo-young timing it, but he gives up again, saying he’s hungry. He’s the boss, so she’s off to get him food.

After the hamburgers, they try again. But this time, Min-seok is tired and heads to the roof for some warm-up sets. He gets Soo-young to follow him with squats, jumps, and burpees until she falls, refusing to do more.

He mentions Jin-woo again, and Soo-young’s reaction makes it clear that she does like him. He apologizes for his jokes and decides that it’s time to go home. When Soo-young asks about the presentation, he says that they’re already halfway done; starting is the first half, and they’ve already done that.

Feeling playful, Min-seok pretends that they’re locked outside on the roof. Soo-young starts to freak out, slamming on the door and yelling for help. But Min-seok pushes the other door, which opens perfectly well. Soo-young leaves in frustration while Min-seok enjoys his free entertainment.

Min-seok’s not done just yet. As they part ways, he asks Soo-young where she lives. He already knows that they’re neighbors, but he wants to make the point so that they can leave work together from now on. She’s unsatisfied by this dreadful news but reluctantly rides a taxi with Min-seok.

When Soo-young gets off the taxi, she crumbles to the ground and throws a fit. From behind, Yoo-ah greets her sister and wonders if she’s gone mad. Soo-young complains to her sister about her horrible boss, but Yoo-ah stops listening and gets excited talking about visiting her Hubby on the way home.

Min-seok walks home, back in his school clothes, and notices Soo-young and Yoo-ah coming out of Dad’s cleaners. He quickly hides as they pass by, but someone surprises him from behind. It’s Grandpa! Min-seok suggests that they head back home, and although Grandpa initially refuses, the chocolate offer gets him to gladly agree. Never say no to chocolate.

The next day, Min-seok is at hockey training when he gets a message to hurry and practice his presentation. Not this PT, but the other PT.

He finally gets the presentation down with Soo-young, and she attempts to leave quickly. Min-seok stops her so that they can leave work together, but Team Leader Kim excuses Soo-young and orders Min-seok to give the presentation again.

Soo-young has finally caught a break from mischievous Min-seok, but Director Han stops her on the way out. Pronouncing her name wrong, he asks her to pick up a small package from downstairs and deliver it to his room. She agrees, but it ends up being quite heavy and the elevators are closed. She uses the stairs — spilling the cleaning lady’s dirty water on the way up — and finally delivers it, but he then asks her to carry the box down to his car while he leisurely practices his golf putt. Ugh.

As he leaves work, Jin-woo sees Min-seok walking out of the building and offers him a ride home. In the car, Min-seok asks if he “intercepted” Jin-woo’s final presentation. Jin-woo assures him that it wasn’t an interception, and Min-seok looks relieved. Then he spots Soo-young on the way and asks Jin-woo to take her along, since she’s going in the same direction.

Min-seok drags sweat-soaked Soo-young into the front seat and then leaves because he claims that he’s meeting up with a friend. He watches them leave and roots for her, unaware that Jin-woo already rejected her.

Judging from Min-seok’s awkward acting, Jin-woo assumes that Soo-young told her boss everything about her feelings for him. She starts to deny his reasoning when a motorcyclist cuts them off, and Soo-young reaches up for the handles to brace herself. But that exposes her soaking armpits, which, unfortunately, Jin-woo sees.

She asks him to drop her off on the side of the road, and Soo-young walks back, dejected. Soo-young narrates a flashback, in which we see how she and Jin-woo first “met.”

Soo-young: One of my favorite movies is one called Serendipity. It was two years ago, at a rescreening of that movie, when I first saw him. Although quite unrealistic, this movie shows a reunion of two lovers through serendipity. I guess I was still young, but at the time, I dreamed of this kind of love. Serendipity… I thought it was fate, but only today did I realize that maybe our reunion was not for better but for worse.

Soo-young thinks back to her first meeting with Jin-woo at work, when she’d been visibly thrilled to realize they worked at the same company. But now she’s been trampled on by reality, and she sadly walks back home.

Min-seok spots Soo-young and excitedly approaches her. He rambles on about how he wishes them the best and that she owes him, but then he notices her shoes and her entire state. He asks what happened, and Soo-young tells him everything. “I did like Jin-woo, but as soon as I confessed, he rejected me. And now he finds me uncomfortable. I understand you’re my boss, but I don’t think that allows you to humiliate me.” With that, she walks away, leaving Min-seok speechless and upset with himself.

Grandpa is waiting for Min-seok when he gets home, but Min-seok tells him that he’s not in the mood to play and heads to his room. But Grandpa waits outside and looks through his window, which prompts Min-seok to come out and play some cat’s cradle. When Min-seok asks why Grandpa wants to play, he implies that he’s playing to keep Min-seok company, not for himself. Aw.

Min-seok tells Grandpa that he made a big mistake today, not on purpose, but it’s making him feel bad. He can’t tell if it’s just because of that or because of the hockey game and presentation tomorrow as well, but life’s feeling a bit complicated at the moment. Min-seok complains that cat’s cradle is boring, but Grandpa smacks him on the head and keeps playing. Ha, way to wrap up a sweet moment.

The next day, Min-seok plays his hockey game, with Yoo-ah and the groupies cheering in the crowd. He scores a goal but one of the referees gets injured, which delays the game. Min-seok’s feeling antsy because he’s got to go be his brother, but the coach directs him to score another goal with the remaining time. He’s not going anywhere.

As soon as the game restarts, Min-seok plays aggressively, trying to get his one promised goal in. Thankfully, his ace skills allow him to score the goal pretty quickly, and then he’s off, even with time remaining in the game. He skates off the rink and runs off to give his presentation.

Meanwhile, Team Leader Kim and Director Han anxiously wait for Min-seok to arrive. But it’s already getting late, it seems like he might miss his presentation.

Min-seok changes and fixes his hair in the taxi, but they hit slow traffic. He decides to make a run for it. When he drops his access badge at the crosswalk, he grabs someone’s cane and skillfully hockey-pucks it through the crowd. He picks up the badge, leaves the cane for the owner, and continues on his way.

The presentation is about to start, but Min-seok is nowhere to be seen. Director Han orders Team Leader Kim to ask Jin-woo to substitute for Min-seok, and just as Jin-woo is about to stand up, Min-seok barrels into the room on a rolling cart.

Min-seok stands on stage and improvises. He explains that if he were to come on stage like any other person, he wouldn’t stand out. He would be obvious and predictable, not fun. The concept for their shopping mall is fun and comfort for everyone. Min-seok puts on a dynamic performance onstage, and the whole crowd bursts into applause after his presentation.

After his conclusion, he gives Soo-young his signature peace-out superhero pose, and she does the same, until she realizes what she was doing. Back at the office, Team Leader Kim nervously waits for the results on the phone. He bursts into happiness, and the whole team erupts into cheers. They did it!

The team goes out for dinner in high spirits. But when Soo-young makes eye contact with Min-seok, her smile quickly fades. Min-seok still looks regretful. But they’re better off than Jin-woo, who looks awfully lonely brooding to dramatic classical music.

Determined to make up for his behavior, Min-seok follows Soo-young around after the team dinner. She grabs beer at the convenience store, and he continues to follow her. At one point, he tells her to just punch him, and after refusing a few times, she actually does.

Even after offering, Min-seok blames Soo-young for having such hard fist. She says that years of dealing with ropes at her mother’s bungee jumping facility made her hands strong and apologizes. He notes this odd fact, adding it to the list of unusual things he knows about Soo-young.

They end up on an empty field, where Soo-young continues to chug beer while Min-seok uses the cold beer can to massage his punched face. After a couple of cans, Soo-young has lost her filter and tells Min-seok that he’s kind of an unpleasant guy. But ultimately they agree to be friends.

Then she loses it. She starts crying and wailing over how cruel Jin-woo was to her, and Min-seok tries to get her up, only to get his hand bitten in the process. She’s a lovely drunk, ain’t she.

The next morning, Min-seok goes through another routine school attendance check-in, identity change, and office arrival. Min-seok spots Soo-young from a distance, but she actively avoids him and rides the elevator without waiting.

On his way, Min-seok runs into President Yoo, who compliments him on his performance yesterday. He says that he appreciates Min-seok’s refreshing nature, and asks him to play a round of golf sometime soon.

Min-seok prides himself in having so much popularity at work and heads to the elevator. But his friends approach from behind, calling him out, having followed him. Min-seok looks back, but headed his direction from the other side is Jin-woo and Director Nam. They look at him curiously as Min-seok tries to figure out what’s going on because this sure isn’t a dream.

COMMENTS

This just keeps getting better. It has comedy and amusement written everywhere, but now and then we get a couple moments of poignancy and reflection. Enough so that we remember that these are real people with emotions and sensitivities. Behind their comic or stoic façades, they all possess some sort of vulnerability. But without a doubt, the humor is definitely more apparent and quite enjoyable. We get plenty of it throughout, and I’m not complaining. I’m here for the chuckles.

This episode was quite heavy on the character development side, but it did a good job of it. I think it’s one of the advantages of having a pretty simple plot: more character time, less time needed for plot development. We get some good character time for both Min-seok and Soo-young, as we get a glimpse into their individual struggles and their budding friendship. We also get some consistent appearances from Grumpy, Director Han, hockey friends, and the smitten retail ladies. I love how we get a taste of all the characters, no matter how insignificant they really are.

I say this again, but Seo In-gook does a great job with being the immature high school boy stuck in a suit. Comments on flying, getting pouty for being disregarded, joking around… they’re all small yet wonderful touches on the whole double-identity dynamic. But when he delivers, he delivers, and I think it has to do with the fearlessness that comes from youth. He’s explosive on that presentation stage, and he looks so alive. I love seeing Min-seok’s candor at the workplace because it’s so uncommon. It’s beautifully refreshing to see someone be so clear with their confusions and disapprovals. He clearly has no idea what’s going on, and he’s not pretending to know. Ironic though, since he is pretending. But pretending and playing dress-up in the best way possible.

Minor yet very significant observation: Gramps is just adorable. He finds the greatest pleasure in the simplest things, like chocolate. His excitement in getting chocolate is probably one of my favorite moments in this episode. He doesn’t necessarily know what’s going on, but he doesn’t have to. He’s always there for Min-seok, and I would argue that he is Min-seok’s best friend. I mean, who else would wait up for you to play cat’s cradle after you’ve had a long day leading two lives? Best friend status right there.

Soo-young had a chance to shine in the episode, and I’m glad she did. She’s probably the most out there, so I needed something to remind me that she belongs in this workplace and this story. She is quite naïve in the sense that she wears her heart on her sleeve and can’t hide her emotions, but she’s waken up to the reality of her situation. Her whole narration on fate and serendipity with Jin-woo is profound, hopeful, yet melancholy, and it was a great way to wrap up a rather pitiful scene. And her consequent encounter with Min-seok shows a deeper sense of vulnerability she held from being rejected. True, she was rejected and Min-seok’s innocent jokes did turn into humiliation, but she also was slapped in the face by reality, in which fate and serendipity don’t come easy.

But nothing a few beers can’t handle, right? After a good punch and a couple beers, at least she’s got a new friend. And though Min-seok may be a dreadfully immature boss, we know that he’s loyal. He’ll joke around, play dress-up, sneak into hockey practice, illegally sign documents, and strike his peace out superhero pose, but he’s a keeper. I hope they become the best of friends.

Preliminaries over, we are really rolling now. SIG is beyond incredible, and the chemistry between SIG and noona is on fire. She will really flesh out his character, and vice versa.

But bad news for the high-school girl and the Chief's son: they are already being marginalized in this drama, which doesn't really need them to get its story going. I am guessing that the 2 + 2 format had to be deployed, but the story is moving at 100 mph with them.

I meant to say ... 100 mph with them as the third wheel.

Goodbye, stilted acting. Dear Kang Ji Whan, Song Seung Hoon, Lee Dong Wook, etc., there is a new gunslinger in town and it is not you.

Haha this reminds me, how is Trot Lovers? I haven't watch it yet, will watch it soon. I find it interesting that Inguk and Eunji's drama aired in the same slot.

tbh, I thought trot lovers was kinda mehh and fell a little bit flat from all the whimsy musical teasers in the first ep.

that said, I'm hoping ep. 2 gets better!

I actually watched Trot Lovers although I said I wouldnt. When there was still no trot it was cute. Hyun Woo is a magnificent jerky star though. His character is such an awful, immature, whining brat that you just want to smack him on the head. but in the close proximity of his lips you forget and get slackjawed. but it is hilarious.
also, Shin Sung Rok managed to crack me up in less than 20 seconds from appearing on screen. He still looks like jae Kyung, hair and all, but the kind of Jae Kyung who is out of the asylum with "memory loss and happy thoughts + absentmindedness-chip" in the brain.
so, pretty funny without the trot plot.

Thank you for the recap!

I'm really loving this series so far, even if it's not without flaws. I'm also rooting for Minseok and Sooyoung to become bff; they can help each other grow. Hopefully he'll quit trolling her so much as well, now that he's been reminded she's a real human being and not a drama character (well....) the way he seemed to view it in the earlier episodes. I can't wait until she discovers she's been bossed around by a bratty high school kid either. Maybe she'll get a little revenge lol.

SIG is rocking this role, and I couldn't be happier. He brings this cocky sense of self in every situation, and if that doesn't remind me of high school boys I don't know what will.
Thought soo young was verging on over the top this episode, but since she hit rock bottem her character has to be on an upswing from now on o hope!
This might be one of the first dramas I can recall where I would be perfectly okay without major romance. Having them be comrads of the corporate battlefield would be enough. Though maybe this is just due to selfishness of my future husband sig not getting
Attached to anyone :)
Did I mention I love this show? Thanks for the recap!

I thought about it and she wasn´t exactly acting out of concern for the environment, rather for the budget. But still. environment wins too.

I myself had a test recently of how many times I can re-use a paper cup, from an italian coffee shop. this sort of thick cardboard, such a waste to use just once. I used it 48 times and it is still sturdy. I just ran out of coffee....

so really, it just caught my attention.usually even poor people are so wasteful in dramas

I think SY says at one point in this episode that MS is only a year older than she is so that would make her 27? Because in episode one, IIRC, the employees were impressed that MS/HS is only 28, younger than JW at 30, making MS the youngest director at combo

SY's been at the company for 2 years. If this is her first job ever, that would make her at least 24-25, logically.

I might be misinterpreting the subs, though.

In episode 2 they are showing her personal files. You can clearly see she was born in 87 making her at least 26 years old, 27 if her birthday has already passed in dramaland! :)

Oh i so love this. I have a soft spot in my heart for stress humor where everyone is at the end of his rope. This one does it sooo well. I'm watching another k-rom-com which is trying to do the stress humor/extreme humor thing and it feels so forced compared to this.

Am falling for hauntingly-lovely director. So cute the way the two male leads keep talking about how handsome each other are. And loved how after heroine thinks about serendipity and fate how Min Suk says "we keep bumping into each other...must be fate."

Am waiting to see how the hierarchy will flip when he realizes she is the noona of stalker, especially if he ends up falling in love with stalker. Right now, i would be happy with heroine ending up with either male leads. But it would be way easier and more convenient for everyone's heart if younguns fell for younguns and adults fell for adults. I just don't want anyone not to have a true love.

Thanks for the recap.

"Am falling for hauntingly-lovely director." I was already crazy about him because of youtube. My coworker whom I infected with kdrama disease is mad for Kang Ji Hwan (sp?) and I was looking around online a few months ago.

Saw LSH and SJR have cameos in Runway Cop, though LSH's features were sooo arresting, dug some more on Youtube.

And then I heard his voice. Pâmoison! [vintage FR word for swooning] And he was talking about beer, of all things!

I checked out a few cuts of Vampire Idols, White Christmas and that movie he did. All I can say is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STTLwI-u4Fg

Oh, how much do I love the way he struts around in the halls of Comfo! To the point where I forgive him for putting his hands in his suit pockets while his jacket is on (ruins the lines!!!)

Wow, how did this become a paean to the many charms of LSH? LOL! *blushes*

Back to the drama. I am totally shipping SY+JW! They are closer in age. Much as I love noona romances, I do need them to be legal adults…

Plus JW needs some love, doesn't he? I'm also very curious about the mother? Former actress? model? singer?

"To the point where I forgive him for putting his hands in his suit pockets while his jacket is on (ruins the lines!!!)" Ha! This is so cute.

I'm rooting for the adult + adult pairing and high schooler + high schooler pairing too. I love a good noona romance, but not while one of them is still in high school.... I really like Sooyoung and Minseok's dynamic as friends instead of lovers too. I guess we'll see.

I'm curious about Jinwoo's mother too! All we know is she's in rehab and used to be famous.... And there might have been a scandal involving his father? Hmm. Can't wait to find out more.

After watching Episode 4 my Jin Woo x Soo Young ship has officially sunk. (Especially after the teaser for the next episode) He really seems like such a jerk and according to the teaser he was the one who fired her! Unless he loosens up (I can understand that he's suffering) he will become a really dislikeable character. Though according to descriptions he's going to fall for our heroine? We shall see how this unfolds!

It was very cruel and vindictive of him to do that...if he was the one responsible for that. I've been so used to secretarial female pettiness in office dramas that I forgot the guys could be this cunning.

When he looked all mean and angry in the mirror after the "apology" I figured he'd be in mean mode but I thought he'd only do it to Min Suk. But when the teaser popped up .. I thought... "Dang! Has his Dad been right about him all this time? Or has he picked up the habit of using folks to wound other folks from some evil person...like his mother?"

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, I feel the same...
That scene where Jin Woo was driving home and came across the retail team having drinks together. I guess he felt angry and jealous, I feared he would do something to separate them and then she was fired. I don't think I can ship them together, at least for now. :(
I am willing to board the other ship though...even if he is a highschooler I can ship them as friends. He really cares about her and wants to help her. I just want them together for now and maybe in the future they can be a couple?? I would accept too if Jin Woo changes and starts working on the right direction, so he can win her heart...
I think I will be pretty satisfied whatever the end of the drama, as long as Soo Young and Min Seok keep being best friends an allies :D

Teasers can be very misleading though, and this show seems to like using the teaser as a red herring (see: The teasers for episode 4)
I think Legolas' competitiveness with Min-seok is actually just the drama's tool to get the character to look at Soo-young in a different light. You know, "If he always gets things right, and I always get it wrong, then did I mess up with this girl?"

but he can deliver another highschooler that diff from his another drama and film.

i so hope soo young and min seok stay as a bff.
it would be so much fan to have an ally in workplace where you can trust anyone.

and soo young have more self confident with their friendship.

Yay, a lovely episode! Like dramallama said, it just keeps getting better. Keep it up HSKoS! :)

Best laugh-out-loud moments:
1. Jinwoo seeing Minseok and Sooyoung it that super awkward position... and just walking away. I almost died! I mean a normal person would at least look a little confused/wierded out, but he's just like *stare*....whatever. LOL!
2. As the manager guy was trying to talk to the exercising Minseok in his office, he started unconsciously bobbing up and down with his squats, hee hee!
3. The "flying" comment. Just so completely random and immature. Silly Minseok-ie!

Best sweet/touching moments:
A lot of these. I love these little touches of emotion in the episode.
1. Minseok getting reamed out by his coach and sunbae for missing the game because of something that was beyond his control (mostly). It just gives my heart a sympathetic twinge, he just looks so discouraged :(
2. The whole cats's cradle conversation with Halbae. It was really nice to hear some of what Minseok was thinking and see him be a little more serious and reflective than usual. And Halbae is just adorable of course!
3. Jinwoo had several- being all calm in public but then throwing things in frustration by himself, crying at a romantic movie in the flashback, and then sitting by himself in the dark after the presentation. That last could have come off as cliche, but it was a beautiful and moody shot (the slow pan from a distance, the flashing of the projector) and really conveyed a poignant sense of loneliness. His character as a whole is really intriguing me- there are a lot of layers that we've only glimpsed so far, smooth professionalism, underhanded business tactics, frustration and ambition, crushing rejection from his father, some kind of anxiety issue ( I'm guessing). Today we also got a hint of a sweet, sensitive side, at least from his younger self. I'm so glad he's not a villian or typical overbearing second lead and I can't wait to see where his character goes!

Lastly just one more thought- I'm really glad Minseok and Sooyoung's relationship is turning into a fun friendship and hope it stays that way- a romance between them would just be weird and I'm pretty certain the show isn't leaning that way, so here's hoping!

Yeay, finally SIG can show people that he has talent in acting. Yes he already prove it in Answer Me 1997 but still... more people realised it now. Eventhough this is another highschooler, I never see shadows of his previous role in every role he plays. Even the presentation scene is his own improvisation. Now that's great talent.

I like the progress of this drama. My favorites are when Min Seok feel guilty because of his actions towards Sooyoung and Jinwoo, and he share that feeling with Gramps. So much heart in that scene. I feel the rivalry (in work) between Jinwoo and Min Seok will happen soon. And I love the dynamic and chemistry between Min Seok and Soo Young. Keep rocking, show!

Though LHN is over the top, I empathize with her most embarrassing moments and love how willingly she "wrecks" her beautiful self for this role. And SIG is just awesome. I'm impressed with how different he is from his role in Master's Sun. The main couple is just too adorable.

Hmm...she's adorably quirky. You have to love her dichotomy, professing her love to the director (that involves courage at a different level) versus allowing herself to be downtrodden by her co-workers (maybe because she's the resident maknae). I was bemused at how she brazenly confessed her love for Director Yoo a couple of episodes ago (very premature timing), but with her back story and the whole Serendipity thing, she suddenly became interesting.

drmjs, I agree, her character is over the top adorkable. Maybe there's a Princess Diaries-like thing going on here, the idea that under years of dorkiness there is an individuality that could shine with a little polish and appropriate confidence. It's sort of a catch-22, she can't fit in because she doesn't try and she doesn't try because she an't fit in. Like I said before, lose the glasses, the bad posture, and Annie Hall clothes and there's potential. After all, she did put together the professional presentation that wowed the crowd.

I'm seriously trying to like her but I just can't. I know she's meant to be 'quirky' and more often than not, I adore that type of character. Thanks for your recap, Dramallama!

This show is a real gem. For the past 4 episodes, I feel like I am watching a movie not drama. Aside from Master's Sun (where his 2nd lead character is not well written), SIG is actually very good as the main lead.

Lee Soo Hyuk is displaying lots of charisma and as Soo-young said, he looks like a "god", albeit a flawed one. I am sympathetic to Jin-woo and I hope that Min-seok will be the catalyst to bring him to the bright side.

Also loving the other characters like Min-seok's dad, grandpa, his team leader, MD, colleagues and classmates.
I am also waiting to see Soo-young shed her insecurity and help with Min-seok's deception.

Way to go, TVN ! Truly a trend leader.

The great thing about our heroine is that she is only a loser at the office. And she isn't a loser to the folks to family or to folks she feels equal to. She has quite a strong personality when she's far from folks who don't believe in her. Notice how she is strong enough to tell a coworker to move his foot from the desk. And there are little glimpses of her strong self already when she decided to tell off our hero. So it's more of a workplace insecurity -- especially because the folks there mistake her maternal take-charge mommy-repairer-mode as a weakness. Cause it's kinda out of place in the workplace.

It's also where she encounters the man she has liked deeply for 2 years. I noticed how more upbeat, confident and well put together (well, for her anyway) she was when she first started and met the director. I'm guessing she's never liked someone the way she liked him. Now after finally confessing, experiencing stark rejection and all the mess after, she's at her lowest point with her self esteem and Min-Seok was not helping matters. Like someone said, it's nowhere but up from here.

Her character and mannerisms seem to be exaggerated to keep in line with the atmosphere of the drama and it might turn people off but I can relate in some ways with the core of her character and I'm rooting for her.

Yes. I can relate to her as well. And the group dynamics is stressing as well. She is a contract employee and thus she also has outsider status to deal with as well. I've been in places -- classes, parties, churches, etc-- where I felt unwanted and bingo! insecurity rears its head.

I find myself thinking both male leads are live and let live kinda guys, especially where women are concerned. I don't think Min Suk even thinks about stuff like how women dress. Same for hottie director chaebol-in-training. And if he does help her, I don't think he'll help her with her dressing. Same for hottie director who seems to be trying to do something he's not suited for. Does he really want to be in Comfo? Or is he there just to please his Dad? I think he's more an artistic soul. Would be interesting if he were gay but I doubt it. I suspect if he tried to "improve" our heroine that he'll be doing it as a way to insult her and to get back at Min Suk. Will see.

I think based on this episode, Min-Seok and Soo-young are going to have a genuine sibling relationship. He absolutely acts like a pain in the a$$ little brother and so far I think the show has emphasized what a kid he's supposed to be. The actor is really nailing over confident, boastful teenager.

Great recap! I also thought Grandpa had the most memorable moment in this episode.

Love the chemistry between the two leads, I’m not certain that they’ll be romantically involved…if they are, the writers will probably pull a “I Can Hear Your Voice” move and hint at it all season and wait until he graduates High School before they seriously put it into action. However, considering that Yoo A is obsessed with Min Seok and Soo Young is in love with Jin Woo, the show may potentially use the friendship between Min Seok and Soo Young to help the leads evolve to a place where they can end up with who they are meant to be with.

Whether they end up with each other, Yoo A & Jin Woo, or nobody at all, I don't really mind to be honest. I’m more than happy to just sit back and enjoy the ride especially with how well written the show is so far. :)

I wonder why he was crying at a romantic movie? Is he just a sweet little crab...all hard on the outside and mush on the inside? If so, does that mean he's trying to learn how to be hard/cold in order to please Daddy? Or.....Does he have a lost love whom he's getting over? Is he looking forward to a wonderful love? Or is he thinking of his mother's and father's love?

I at first thought that he could be dreaming of a romantic love ala Serendipity just like Sooyoung was. Then again, he could be crying over his stress in his family and ran away to an empty cinema to get away from it all. Then the happy love depicted in the movie crushed him and broke him.

Thanks for the amazing recap as always! I think I'm part of a minority whose actually looking forward to a Min Seok/Soo Young romance (or noona romance as people like to call it) Oh well! I'll stick like glue to my pairing till the end!

I don't care about the age gap as long as the characters can complement each other well. The two of them are adorable and I can't wait to see how their relationship will progress when she finds out the truth! She really should soon!

I've already seen episode 4, and I have to say that unless Jin Woo changes his attitude a tad bit, I can't really support him with Soo Young even in the future. He's destructive towards himself and others right now, even if it may be justified AT TIMES because of his back-story ):

If he really did make Soo Young lose her job based on the Episode 5 preview, I think it would be because it was a personal attack against Min Seok since he is close to her...which would make the act a little cruel since she's innocent but in the brunt of it anyway.
Who knows, though? We'll have to wait for next week!

I look forward to seeing all their character grow. Let's hope for a smooth ride through the rest :)

Required fields are marked *

I'm both eagerly anticipating the noona romance and really uncomfortable with it (as I was with I Hear Your Voice). Min Seok and Soo Young not only have great chemistry with each other, but their personalities are actually really complimentary to each other too. Not to mention, in some ways, I think they are on the same plane as far as maturity level goes. If they were both full-grown adults, I don't think anyone would have a problem with the pairing at all. It's just that pesky issue of him being a highschooler and her being an adult. If this were real life, and I had a friend her age (I am coincidentally the same age as Soo Young, so most of my friends are her age, lol) who was thinking of dating a high schooler, I would tell them to think again. Because in real life, the likelihood of that being a good decision is incredibly low, if at all.

But that's the beauty of dramas. They can make the most unrealistic things look possible, lol.

Soo Young and Jin Woo just don't seem the slightest bit suited for each other though. If they were real people, and I actually knew them and were (for some random reason) trying to set them both up with someone, I would Not set them up with each other. Even if Jin Woo weren't kind of a jerk, there's no way the two of them would actually really get along in real life.

I think, one of the reasons Minsuk likes SooYoung is that she wasn't into him like the office ladies and the girls at school. She did not go out of her way to be close to him at all. That was to me, was Interest Magnet numero uno. He was curious, and he discovered a Pot of Moss. I like her confidence and insecurity, her kindness and bold manner. I have not watched many kdramas. Only a selected few for the past 10 years or so, but I agree with some of you beanies here who say her character is quite unique from other heroines in kdrama universe. I am rooting for her. Ra Ra Sooyoung ah! Knock their socks off! Jinwoo's in particular! Because Minsuk's are already off..albeit unknowingly. Possibly. Haha

I'm shipping SY + JW because they are both adults. After all, MS is a minor by law and still in HS at this point in the story.

My stance is colored by RL because there was scandal here in my country surrounding rich/powerful/influential men having sex parties where they hired teenagers to strip and/or prostitute themselves. And no legal action was taken, instead the DA was even fired!

Sorry for the extreme example and gritty details, I know this is fiction, but I personally need them to be both of legal age. I guess because, personally, I have issues with being with someone who cannot enter into a contract/have a job/pay rent???

Maybe there will be a time skip? And what happens when the real HS reappears? This drama better be good!

Age different put aside, I totally adore MS and SY! The way MS eyes light up and his mouth curling into a mischievous smile when he sees her just make my day. Its like she's kinda of MS personal booster! And I love SY attitude with him , hands in her pocket and 'I couldn't care less if you are my director' attitude whenever they are together.

I don't think she's weak, maybe a bit insecure, considering she's a contract worker and all. SY is a likeable character and there are many thing one can like about her. She's very responsible with her sister and that's a major plus, she's very positive too, every time bad things happen, she will pep talk herself out of it..posture notwithstanding of course. I also admire the fact that she confess her feeling to JW (and he's a Director!) though one can argue the way she did it...some people will just keep it to themselves and that's including me!

As for MS and YA, I hope they will be just friends. I find the way MS treat YA a bit like my brother treats me. What with forever knitted brows, and impatient voice like..'okay, fine! fine! just get it over with...my time is precious but since you're my kid sister..'

On the other hand, the way he treats SY is completely different. And the way he always teases SY, I don't think that's brotherly at all. Maybe its only me but MS is oozing with extra sexiness when he's with SY. Its live his doing it unconsciously or something well since he's still in his teen. I love watching his face and hers whenever they are together!

Watching SIG is pure pleasure...one can just watch at his face even though you understand nothing (I watched ep 4 without the sub). There's this Bollywood actor that has the same on screen persona, Shah Rukh Khan. SIG has that kind of 'thing' just like Shah Rukh that just glued you to his whole body and face.

I've never post comment (yes, I'm lazy and just 'like' any comment that i find suited to my taste and also since my English is just so-so) this long and its all SIG fault! Sigh...

They seriously need to give a little bit of a back story on the stalker girl. Why does he tolerate her presence? If they are close, why doesn't he know who her sister is? They need to give her more depth if they want to keep her relevant to the main story. Seo In Guk is owning this character and it's really nice to see him steadily growing as an actor with every project he undertakes. I'm liking Lee Ha Na's character the most though. She's just so weird and awkward. Her look reminded me so much of Kim Sun Ah in Scent of a Woman (pre-makeover).

Noona romances like this where one of the characters is just a smidgeon too young for the other/bordering that line always make me feel very conflicted inside. I love them, and I feel terrible for loving them. On the one hand, this drama has done a fabulous job of making Soo Young and Min Seok look compatible with each other. They just suit each other, plain and simple. If they were both adults, no one would have a problem with them ending up together. On the other hand....he's 18. There's just no sugar coating his age. In real life, the likelihood of a pairing where one person is that young working is slim to none.

So I want them together, but I feel bad for wanting it.

My solution? Pretending both of them are older/younger then they actually are. I'm pretending Soo Young is around 24/25. This is her first big job out of college (if I understand correctly), and she's also very inexperienced when it comes to relationships, so that makes it very easy to pretend she's a couple years younger (not that there is an age requirement for being bad at relationships. I'm 27 myself, and I'm kind of terrible at them, lol). As for Min Seok, I'm just going to pretend he's 18/19/20 (whichever age makes me feel the least uncomfortable) and that he started school late as a kid or something. (That's not a thing that happens in Korea, since they love to get their kids into school as early as possible, but I'll pretend it is anyway.)

Luckily, the characters in this drama are fabulous, so it shouldn't be too hard pretending.

In fact, one of the things I'm always the most impressed with in TVN dramas is the characters they manage to create. They do things with them that you just do not see anywhere else. They may not always be unique in and of themselves, but they are definitely different from the characters you tend to find in dramas on the major channels. Which, in a way, makes them pretty unique.

Apart from Yoo A (who I really want to sick the cops on for being a creepy stalker), I love all of the characters. I connect and identify with Soo Young the most. She acts the way I feel. Awkward, shy, embarassed, unsure of herself, a little ashamed, ridiculously quirky, unintentionally adorable, and just unable to fit in because she can't help but stand out. I feel like she's acting out my soul on screen.

I love Min Seok for his brazenness, his fearlessness, his confidence, his goofiness, his light-hearted (and heart-racing) teasing, and his undeniably kind heart. I like him for much the same reasons I liked Enrique in Flower Boy Next Door. Because he's kind. Min Seok is obviously much tamer and more realistic then Enrique as far as personality goes, but they both have a goodness to them that I love. I mean, who doesn't want a guy willing to make himself look ridiculous just to make you smile when you're having a bad day? I'm almost positive we're going to start seeing Min Seok hamming it up for Soo Young's benefit, and you've got...

Well, I unknowingly went over the character limit for my comment, lol. I was going to say you've got to love a guy who's willing to do that for someone.

Of course, I don't just love Min Seok because he's kind. He's also got this wonderful adorkableness that is irresistable. If he got any more cute, the world would not be able to handle him.

My first noona romance drama was I Hear Your Voice. I cringed at the thought that they could be romantically involved at first. But both the leads convinced me with their characterisation and acting prowess of their chemistry and possible romance and then the age gap seemed smaller. I was sold. Haha. I think it was due to both leads' abilities to have chemistry with anyone in any drama.

For this one, at first I was hoping for a JW and SY pairing, as I sense an irresistable sexy chemistry and JW doesn't seem so bad in the first 3 episodes. He was polite to no end. I sense no romantic chemistry between MS and SY.

Like you, I am imagining MS to be of same age group as SY because he really is in real life..haha.. This because together they make a kind and 'personal growth' relationship that I love.

On just the subject of romance, To me, SY believed that her crush on JW was real love when in reality, JW didn't even remember her name for 2 years until that day. She realised this ofcourse, when she was rejected brutally. Her friendship with MS however, is real and gradual and they get to become friends and loyal allies after much annoyance and hurt sensitivities. She might soon realise that this kind of love is the real one, IF the coupling happens at all. Haha. Who knows..with Kdrama, she might be with someone not in the picture right now. Like..gasp..the real brother.

See? I am still on the fence. Haha.

Oh my. I didn't think of them together at alll! Maybe I can't expect too much of any pairing at this point. It's not a nice feeling, when our match-making plans do not match the writer's. Lol.
