Park Yong-ha celebrates five years in Japan

Thanks to Story of a Man (aka The Slingshot, aka the best drama so far this year, yeah I said it), I have newfound appreciation for Park Yong-ha, who has enjoyed some popularity in Japan for a number of years (no doubt in large part due to his role in Winter Sonata). On August 1, Park celebrated the five-year anniversary of his career in Japan with a concert at the Saitama Super Arena, located in the suburbs of the greater Tokyo region.

The event’s name, “Beautiful Days 1873,” refers to the 1,873 days since Park’s Japanese debut in June 2004. There were approximately 20,000 fans (!) in attendance.

SONG OF THE DAY

Park Yong-ha – “初めて出逢った日のように” (Hajimete deatta hi no you ni), which is the Japanese version of the song titled “처음 그날처럼” (Just like the first day) from the All In OST.

At the event, Park Yong-ha sang fifteen songs, including those from Japanese single “期別 (기별),” as well as the above-posted song “Just like the first day” from the soundtrack of the drama All In.

Park recently put out a new Japanese mini-album on July 29, called “Once in a Summer,” which landed on the Oricon chart in sixth place the day it went on sale.

And what does an arena packed with twenty thousand fans look like? (I knew Park Yong-ha was popular, but that’s pretty insane.)

A polyglot, a singer and a fine actor with apparent range.... is there something he doesn't do? Given his background, he might have have been a fine adept of Bene Tleilax...

20,000?! That's crazy! Good for him!

I agree, SOAM is the best drama for me too, so far. But I still yet to see City Hall...hmm.

@Samsooki...what other languages does he know other than Korean and Japanese?

Every time something new is posted about one of the stars from Story Of A Man, I want to go back and re-watch every single episode, because it truly was one of the best shows I've ever seen (Korean, US, BBC...you name it). Until City Hall came along, I would also have said that it is absolutely the best drama of 2009, even though they're completely different and really can't be compared side by side. This is actually the only thing I've ever seen Park Yong-ha in, but I thought he was fantastic.

20,000 people; that is amazing! And just about half the size of the town I currently live in. :-)

Park Yong Ha was really amazing in SOAM. I really didn't like his character in Winter Sonata, but he really has gone a long way~ :D

SOAM has become one of my top favorite series, and it's mainly because of your episode reviews that I decided to watch such an amazing series. Thank you~

there is no doubt about it, PYH has a great voice, very smooth, very slick but his singing seems to lack something - heart, emotions - I don't know what it is but his singing leaves me cold. One actor/singer who does touch my heart is Jo Hyun Jae. His version of the song Now It's Goodbye (which he sang in 3Dads 1Mom and during his last fanmeeting before he started his military duty) seems to tug at my heart strings whenever I hear it. JHJ's voice may not be as smooth or slick as PYH's but it has a lot of heart in it.

JHJ's voice may have a lot of rough edges to it, but those rough edges are what makes his voice more compelling to listen to as compared to a more polished voice like PYH's.

Why are we talking about Jo Hyun Jae in a Park Yong Ha post?

^It's funny you say that because I think JHJ is the less expressive & emotionally flat actor between the two of them.

@22
How/where did you get his songs for your mp3, I want to dl it, too? I adore him, too. First time I saw him in SOAM and I was very impressed, never did see Winter Sonata, though its a popular drama, could'nt make myself to watch it. He was sooo good in SOAM.

@21
Go see it NOW, SOAM is THE best, you have to take JAVABEANS word when she said it, no quibbling about it.

20 000 wow, I am impressed!!! Looks like he borrowed one of JE's airballoons too. LOL!

I quite like the Japanese version of this song. He's got a good singing voice.

@21 SOAM is one of the best kdramas I have seen. It twists and turns very unexpectedly. Some days I watched 3 episodes in a row!!! You really should watch it .-)

I hated him in Winter Sonata, but then again I never liked the drama. I thought I wouldn't care much about him in On Air, but by the end of the drama I was smitten, hehe. Actually his roles in On Air and SoAM are kind of similar - a nice guy with conflicts.

Hope to see him in another drama soon!

In terms of Hallyu popularity in Japan, I think Park Yong Ha may be only behind the "Four Heavenly Kings" (Bae Yong Joon, Song Seung Heon, Lee Byung Hun, Kwon Sang Woo.) But, in a way, he's more like BoA, Younha or K in that even though Winter Sonata (and All In) opened the door, Park Yong Ha essentially built his popularity in Japan through his (Japanese language) music almost exclusively. He described it as a very hard and lonely struggle, not just in the language, but the customs and the sense that he was living off a dying fad. However, he managed to move past his early Hallyu Idol success and become an established balladeer in Japan.
