[Staff Spotlight] Get to know Dramaddictally

Explain your username (and/or avatar).
Drama. Addict. Dramatically. “Dramaddictally.” It seemed really smart when I came up with it in the middle of the night to join Dramabeans. Just don’t try saying it out loud.

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?
Flower Boy Ramyun Shop was the first drama I ever watched and it made a big impression. Waiting 11 episodes for a first kiss that literally made me squeal? Yep, I needed more of that in my life. Also, I found out there was an entire world of flower boys out there — and I let their pretty faces lead the way.

Name a job or two that you’ve had in the past.
I’ve had a lot of jobs — from selling clothes to slinging pizza — but a defining one was Urban Researcher. I got to live on multiple continents, explore new cities, and dream up smart-sounding analyses.

What’s your favorite drama you recapped?
I just finished weecapping my very first drama, Kiss Sixth Sense, and I had a ton of fun with it.

What drama genres do you especially like?
Romance ♥ Comedy or melo doesn’t matter as long as it comes with heart eyes and/or finger hearts. I also like slice-of-life.

What drama genres do you especially dislike?
I try to avoid anything violent, independent of genre. Other than that, I’m not a huge fan of procedurals or sci-fi or fantasy — but I will watch them if the right actors are involved (refer to question 2 re: flower boys).

What drama character would you want to be?
Hmm. It’d have to be one that owns a decked-out rooftop apartment overlooking Seoul. I don’t need chaebol money. Just 90 square meters of outdoor space to call home.

What was your major in school?
Sociology (followed by sociology and sociology), so I can’t help but view dramas from a social perspective.

What’s a random skill you have?
Burrito rolling. No joke. I’ve gotten more praise about my burrito rolling skills than things I actually went to school for. (On top of that, I will literally roll anything into a tortilla and call it a burrito. That might be a skill on its own.)

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?
Lee Junho, circa 2013. Next question.

Which of the 7 deadly sins would be your undoing?
Gluttony, for sure. Sometimes when I’m eating I’m already thinking about my next meal.

Your favorite drama has an unholy alliance with your most hated drama and produces a mutant baby drama. Describe the plot.
A man and a woman meet but don’t realize they’ve also met in the past. As they fall in love, they learn they are both survivors of the same building collapse. The woman uses a magic watch to go back in time and try to stop the building from collapsing. She repeatedly fails. Each time she goes back she loses a little of her life, thus aging rapidly while everyone around her ages at a normal speed. In the present, the man and woman work together on creating a memorial for the victims of the building collapse, but she is elderly now and the young man no longer recognizes her. The woman stays angry about this until the man is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Then, plot twist, we find out that she is actually the one who has forgotten him.

@dramaddictally lovely to meet you and looking forward to reading more of your weecaps. It’s nice to meet someone else who is part of our club that is not happy with the current trend of ruining rom coms by mixing them with violent elements.

Hey oh, Dramaddictally! Your name really is easier to spell than to say, ha! I wonder if your burrito-rolling skills could laterally transfer to gimbap rolling, because that truly seems to take a lot of practice to make pretty. FBRS is an all-time favorite of mine, too. I think 2022 is due for a new K-drama with Flower Boy in the title just because, in part, that’s why we’re here in the first place. Looking forward to more good recaps, thanks! 💕 ✌🏻

Two genius ideas! I have never tried to make gimbap but now that you've said it, it seems like a challenge that I need to tackle.
And about a 2022 Flower Boy series, I am so onboard.

Hi @dramaddictally! I really enjoyed your weecaps of KSS and am looking forward to your next outing.

You and I have the same taste in dramas - your most-loved is in my all-time top 3. And 2013 Junho is a bit young for me, but I'd fight you (OK, maybe take turns with you) for 2018 Junho.

Let’s be real, I would meet Lee Junho anytime, any place 😅 I landed on 2013 because that was the year 2PM put out the Ha.Ni.Pun. video and did a bunch of live performances of it. Have you watched it recently? The eye makeup, the falsetto, and, ya know, that dance…
(also, in this dream encounter I would be my age in 2013 too, not my age now. That’d be too crazy 🤣)

So happy you liked the weecaps!!

Nice meeting you Dramaddictally. And I like your unholy alliance. JBL*(I don't recall).

You're not alone in your take on glutonny.

Great to have you here, @dramaddictally! I really enjoyed your recent recaps of Kiss Sixth Sense. As a fellow sociology major, I totally got you when you said you couldn’t help but see dramas from a social perspective. I’m sure this will make your upcoming recaps fascinating to read. Can’t wait!

P.S. I hope when you put Just Between Lovers in your last question, it was because you loved it, not hated it. I know you love Junho (who doesn’t?) and want to meet him (get in line), but I just need the reassurance lol.

Not a sociologist quite yet (still in the process of getting that degree) but I hope to join the ranks soon.

Thank god for JBL being the loved drama ❤️. I swear that show changed my life.

It changed my life too. Actually I wrote an essay about it for DB (before I joined the team):

Thanks for sharing that really insightful article. I am glad that you joined the team so we will have the opportunity to hear your voice on a range of dramas in the future too.

I have that drama on my watchlist but I am not sure if or when I will watch it as it’s too close to the day job. It does sound like the story, acting and characters have been done really well and it’s one of the dramas that showcases what K drama is capable of when everything lines up properly.

2

@reply1988 Thanks for reading the essay.
I can't recommend JBL enough. But I agree, you may need to be in a certain frame of mind when you go into it. And if you are an architect I think it may bring up other emotions. (I also worked in and around construction and buildings for much of my working life, but not on the ground -- as a researcher. So, watching the drama feels a little like research in that respect too. I can distance myself and be an observer).

2

I totally understand. I am a family therapist so the day job is listening to other people’s trauma, loss, witnessing their high expressed emotions, as they deal with living with physical and mental illness and limiting life conditions etc. etc. and thats with children and their families and so on a bad day or heavy week entertainment can’t be work. Listening to people feels like work so the more detached the topic the better.

So I am one of those people that liked The light in your eyes as dementia is no joke and the way they showed it from the woman’s point of view was novel. I love that here in this community we can love and hate on the same drama and still have a laugh about each other’s reaction to it.

Time travel is so far from the harsh reality I see daily that I can handle those kinds of storylines. I can’t handle horror, thrillers or verbal or physical violence so I am really limited in what I watch to distract and switch off.

1

Thank you so much for sharing your essay. It was gorgeously written and incredibly empathetic. I’m going through some tough times in my life right now, and maybe this is a bit personal to admit, but the line where you wrote that no one deserves the circumstances they were born into and no one is acing life was so genuinely comforting to me it bought tears to my eyes. Even though it obviously wasn’t your intention when writing it, I needed to hear this from someone. Even if it was a stranger on the internet with only a shared hobby and subject major.

I will definitely be on the lookout for more of your work in the coming days. If that masterpiece and the Kiss Sixth Sense recaps were just the beginning for you, us beanies are not ready.

3

@reply1988 Now I understand. In that case, the only thing I can say in favor of JBL is that it offers hope in the face of all the terribleness. Maybe a little like Reply 1988, actually, in the face of all the political and economic turmoil, there’s human connection.

3

@ladynightshade That is the highest compliment I could receive. Thank you so much. As a writer, I aim to make the reader feel something. And of all the things a piece of writing could make someone feel, I’m happy it brought you comfort. :)

@dramaddictally: I can’t sleep again and can only read serious stuff up to a point so grateful for you posting these. Gorgeous visuals for sure. Their songs don’t do much for me but Junho with gorgeous eye make up is a thing of beauty. I normally don’t like anyone’s face heavily made up in RL and/or for performances but he should wear eye make up ALL THE TIME!😂
