Thought For The Day: Planning.

We’re all planning for something. Maybe it’s a long awaited vacation, a college visit, or a special day. With the sweet warmth of summer come the promising plans of afternoon swims or movie nights with friends.

If you’re anything like me, you live by the calendar on your IPhone. And when all else fails, you retreat to your faithful friend, the spiral notebook planner, which details your plans for the next several months. Since I have become so used to living by such a rigid schedule, I find that the slightest change to my plans causes me to panic. I only like change when it’s planned change, a change that fits well into my schedule.

Then I’m brought back to the verse that I hear and read time and time again:

“the heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” Proverbs 16:9

The Lord has given us the ability to make plans for ourselves, but ultimately, He gets the final say. He’s the director, and His will wins. My problem with change only reveals a lack of trust in God’s plan and an arrogance that screams, “my way is better!”

So here’s the challenge:

Make plans. Make lots of them. Plan your wedding, plan for that concert, plan for that mission trip. Fill the pages of your planner with fun events, time with family, and time with friends. But when God directs you somewhere else, walk it out in faith. Step out of your will and into His, and there you will experience joy. Live in the freedom of spontaneity and enjoy each moment you’re given, trusting that where you are at this very moment is right where He wants you to be.
