Hello, are you still there?

To say that it’s been a crazy few months would be an understatement. In between juggling work, friend and family commitments, travel planning and of course lots and lots of noms, I’ve had to face up to the reality that I’m (sadly) not a full time travel/food blogger. In fact, several times I’ve thought about just throwing in the blogging towel.

But to my surprise and delight, several people have commented lately about how they’ve noticed my internet absence and actually missed my posts. Thanks, you guys – you know who you are, and it really meant a lot to me to hear you say that.

So, for the past couple of weeks, I’ve been telling myself I need to update this blog. But as with anything in life, once you break a habit, it can be difficult to get back into the swing of things. I have experienced so much since I last posted (in May! Eep!) with many draft posts still to complete from my last 2 trips and another trip coming up in just 2 weeks (Italy! Can’t wait!)…I simply didn’t know where to begin.

So to ease me gently back into things, I thought I would simply post some photos from one of my favourite local cafes, Sprolo.

I arrived to find a different menu to what I remembered from the last time I was there. Bonus!

Of the 3 coffee choices on offer today, I decided to go for the Panama. This is because I favour blends that are smooth, mellow and creamy without too much bitterness or acidity. For this reason, I lean towards chocolate, caramel, toffee, or in this case, vanilla notes.

My now usual order of a long macch topped up ($4.70) delivered exactly what I was looking for.  

I considered the rice pudding or granola, but as it was after noon and hence more like lunch than brunch, I decided in the end I wanted a savoury dish, and chose the pulled beef toastie ($11.50).

This may look like a humble dish, but it really packed a punch in flavours, with sticky, creamy melted cheese to complement the salty beef, and a satisfying crunch to rival Sizzler’s famous cheese toast – sadly, now a thing of the past.

I was also tempted by the mini caramel doughnuts ($2.50) at the front counter and just had to have one for dessert.

I thought this was a little overpriced, especially given my sneaking suspicion that they may come from a larger pack available from Coles or Woolworths. I’m sure I’ve tasted something similar before, if not exactly the same.

My friend chose the traditional Singaporean breakfast ($12).

I wish I’d asked for a taste of the kaya, a traditional Singaporean/Malaysian coconut jam. My friend has high standards for poached eggs, and she was very pleased with the ones dished up by Sprolo.

What impressed us most, though, was the service. Not 5 minutes after placing our order, our drinks were brought out to us, followed shortly thereafter by our meals. Good Ol’ fashioned Malaysian/Singaporean efficiency at its best! I left making a mental note to myself that I really should drop in more often for a quick and affordable breakfast/brunch and good coffee!
