He holds her hand;
Each step is unsteady.
Tears fill his eyes
As they walk along.
His cancer has spread;
Time is quickly fading.
He thinks of the past
As they walk along.
His wife has depended
Upon him for years.
Worry fills his heart
As they walk along.
He remembers that God
Knows what He is doing.
He starts to smile
As they walk along.
Is this based off of a story in your life?
It’s beautiful, really.
No–it’s based off of observing and listening to people who have been through this particular valley with their faith intact.

Wow you painted a great picture. Good stuff!
Thanks, Adam!
Thanks, Matt. I know a couple who is going through something very similar. I don’t think he’s long for this world, but he is confident of his final destination.
Knowing that you are secure helps.

Beautiful. I love poetry and I love when bloggers branch out and write it. Awesome.
Thanks so much–it is my Friday thing.
Beautiful. Not you Matt, well, I’m not saying you are not beautiful, I’m just saying that… wait, what I meant.. whoa. Never mind.
I would say “embrace your feelings” but I really don’t want you to. 🙂

Thanks man–I enjoyed writing it. Sort of a strange thing to admit. Helped me remember things I had forgotten.

beautiful, brotha.
Thanks, Justin.
The poem or Matt? Just asking.
Why not both?
Clarification: Matt, his writing, and his honey mustard fingers are beautiful.
YES!
Thanks, Justin.

I love how poetry packs so much meaning into so few words. As a guy maybe I shouldn’t admit it, but I wish I wrote more poems. But they come from a different place than “regular” blog posts, wouldn’t you say?
In any case, this is a beautiful poem, Matt.
Yes–they come from a very different place. I was hesitant to write and publish poems on this site until I decided to simply do what I wanted to do without thinking about how “good” or “bad” it might be.
Thanks, Chad–appreciate it.
Awesome observation and beautifully told bro’
Thanks, man. Means a lot from a poet like you.
Awesome, Matt!
Yes, both you and the poem…

Beautiful, Matt…say so much of our view of God. Really very heartwarming and inspiring.
Thank you! God is good–in good times and in bad.
[…] As They Walk Along by Matt Cannon […]
Great post. Thank you for sharing.
My pleasure–and thank you for reading
[…] As They Walk Along – by Matt Cannon. What can I say – Matt rocks. He has both an extra warped sense of humor and a more serious, poetic side that take turns posting. I like ‘em both. […]
