Wisconsin Speaks #9: Dustin DeMuth, 2014 Brewers Fifth Round Pick, T-Rats Third Baseman

GRAND CHUTE, Wis.–

In June, the Milwaukee Brewers drafted numerous players in the 2014 MLB Draft that could be the future of their franchise. In the fifth round, the Brewers selected a four-year third baseman from Indiana University in Dustin DeMuth. As Aramis Ramirez is getting older, and Lyle Overbay and Mark Reynolds may not be around forever, it is time to start developing more third basemen in the minor leagues, which is exactly what the Brewers are doing.

DeMuth played fifteen games for the Rookie League Helena Brewers before eventually being called up to the Low-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. I spoke with DeMuth after his ninth game with the T-Rats. The full interview is below.

AS: “What was the intial reaction when you got drafted?”
DD: “It was awesome. It was a dream come true for the Brewers to draft me, I honestly didn’t know who was going to draft me, for the Brewers to draft me, you know it’s a great organization, it’s a great opportunity and I’m ecstatic.”

AS: “You played fifteen games at the rookie level (Helena) before getting called up to low-A, what was the reaction when you were called up?”
DD: “It was awesome. I was excited, Im glad to be here, glad to be called up after a great time in Helena. It was a great group of guys and great coaches out there and I’m happy to be up here.”

AS: “How do you feel like you’re fitting into this team so far?”
DD: “Just kind of working my way in, they’ve already played a lot of games. I think other people have already found their nitch you know so I havent really found that yet and I’m just trying to play hard, get on base, hit the ball, and make plays on defense. Just try to help the team.”

AS: “You’ve been batting lead-off recently, how do you like that?”
DD: “It’s alright. I led off a little bit in college. I’m going to do the same thing no matter where I am in the lineup, just try to hit the ball hard and get on base, so doesn’t really matter.”

AS: “Is there a third baseman you have ever or currently look up to?”
DD: “Chipper Jones is probably the best third baseman ever. Evan Longoria, I really like how he plays the game, just kinda plays it even-keel, I really enjoy watching him play.”

The catch that is spoken of below can be found at 0:53

AS: “Back to tonight, top of the seventh inning you robbed [Gabriel Rosa]… Can you just talk about that catch?”
DD: “He smoked it. It kind of started right at me, but it had a little bit of tail toward the line so I just stuck my arm out there and I am glad I caught it.”
