Seaham Red Star vs Consett

I am considerably behind where I was at this point last season in terms of games. This was my 42nd game of the season while a year ago tomorrow was my 57th game of the 2016-2017 season. And, I certainly don’t expect myself to catch up on them 15 games! After tomorrow’s game at Darlington RA, I’m going up to Scotland on Friday. I will be at a game on Saturday and it’s likely to be somewhere around the Edinburgh area or possibly just Berwick Rangers vs Montrose. I would rather go to a new ground near Edinburgh but it’s quite probable that I’ll end up doing a revisit to Berwick Rangers. There was a few potential game tonight. Other than this, Sunderland RCA were hosting Dunston UTS and Jarrow Roofing were hosting Marske United. With the only visit to Seaham on the season being in pre-season, I decided Seaham was the place to be tonight. I have seen these two sides play each other before at Seaham. It came in November 2015 when Seaham ran out comfortable 3-0 winners. Both squads have considerably changed since then!

Match report:

Consett come from behind to claim points at Seaham

Consett came from behind to win 1-2 at Seaham Red Star on Tuesday night.

Liam McBryde had slotted the hosts into an early lead, but goals from Jack Elliott and Michael Sweet saw the Steelmen take the points.

The win lifts Consett to sixth in Northern League Division One, while Seaham remain ninth.

Red Star started with McBryde and Ash Davis leading the line while Robbie Bird and Lee Hetherington worked the wings.

Consett started well and created a chance within the opening three minutes. Matthew Slocombe picked out Daniel Hawkins and his effort was goalbound until Tom Price blocked.

Clever work from Davis created Seaham’s first chance in the ninth minute. Having beaten two defenders, the former Blyth Spartans forward cut in to drill a low shot but Ross Coombe saved well.

And, soon after, in the 13th minute, Seaham took the lead. Aaron Croft opened up play with a defence-splitting ball to find Hetherington and his pinpoint cross picked out McBryde who was able to slot home.

Having taken the lead Seaham looked to calm the game down. The east Durham outfit were happy to hold possession and limit Consett’s chances.

Plenty of hard work led to the visitors creating a good chance just before the half hour mark. Sweet found himself with a shooting opportunity but Jordan Harkess saved with his feet.

Hawkins then curled a free-kick narrowly wide for the visitors before they deservedly pulled level just before half-time. A fine individual effort saw Elliott pick up possession 35 yards from goal before beating three defenders.

A fine individual effort saw Elliott pick up possession 35 yards from goal before beating three defenders. On the edge of the penalty area, Elliott looked up and drilled a low effort into the bottom corner.

Following the break, Consett created a great chance to take the lead inside the opening four minutes. Fine work from Nathan Lawrence saw the former Durham City man pick out Jordan Lavery but he was unable to find the target from close-range.

Consett had started the second half very well and created another chance 10 minutes in. David Dowson, McKinnon and Lavery all linked up to find Hawkins but his powerful drive from 25 yards was slightly too high.

Despite Consett looking the brighter, Seaham could have regained their lead with a sharp break in the 58th minute. A sharp counter gave Bird a chance but a fine double save prevented both Bird and McBryde.

The hard work of the visitors paid off in the 63rd minute as they took the lead. Lavery burst down the wing and crossed to find Sweet who headed home from six yards.

Once ahead, Consett were content and a host of substitutions slowed the game down.

Seaham pushed late on and created numerous half chances but couldn’t find an equaliser and the visitors took the points.
