We explored the surroundings of lake Mývatn in the morning and went on a tour to explore Lofthellir Cave in the afternoon. After a good breakfast, we took road 1 to the power station and headed towards Krafla and the iconic Víti crater. Víti is a huge explosion crater, about 300 metres in diameter. The crater was formed during a massive volcanic eruption that occurred in 1724. The eruption continued more or less non-stop for 5 years and Víti’s bubbling cauldron of mud boiled for more than a century after that.
To go there, we took the road to the power plant and drove to the top parking area. There was a 60 minutes-walk around the crater with wonderful views, but it was very very very muddy ! Víti was quite amazing and the blue colour was so vivid !!
We went back to road 1, then turned left on road 860. We stopped at Grjótagjá, a pool in a lava cave fed by hot springs. Some people bath in the steamy blue water, but it’s at your own risk as the water temperature is close to 45°C… We spotted some interesting vegetation as well.

But the humidity is not so great, it was difficult for me to cope with the heat and the moisture. Otherwise, it’s a beautiful country.

I hope you will have the chance to visit. It’s an unique experience. It is true that it can be very expensive if you do a lot of organized tours, but you can enjoy a lot of free stuff as well.
