Fisher of Men • 2006 • weird fantasy shortstory by Hannu Rajaniemi

★★★

Meta: This weird fantasy shortstory appeared first 2006 in his first short anthology Words of Birth and Death. Additionally, it will appear in his anthology Hannu Rajaniemi: Collected Fiction.

Synopsis: A Finnish sea goddess Ahti entices a man living in a cabin on the coast. He faces the other husbands and has to struggle for freedom.

Review: Rajaniemi places his stories in a continuum between fairy tale and hard SF. This story is clearly on the fantasy extreme, disregarding shallow references to burnout syndrome or startup leads. The title references Jesus’ “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men,” turning it into a weird story. The story might not be the strongest but the characters turn from simple to interesting.
