Let’s Talk Books With Rachel Brookes, Author Of The Just Breathe Series

Today Rachel Brookes, a fellow Aussie, and author of the contemporary romance Just Breathe Series, talks about her books, bookshelves and what it is about reading that she loves so much. Rachel is one of the many authors attending this Saturday’s Indie Authors Down Under Event, so if you happen to be going, make sure you stop on by and say Hi to Rachel.

What are you currently reading?

Consequence of Deception by Ella Fox, it is amazing!

What’s the last book you brought?

Sinners at the Alter by Olivia Cunning, I love me some sinners!

Do you prefer to read books in print or electronically?

I love my kindle so I’ll say electronically.

If I was to walk into your house right now, what would your bookshelves look like? Do you have an organisation system (genre, colour, author…) or are you just happy to go with the flow?

The books that I own in paperback are all in alphabetic order of author. I am a little OCD like that.

How often do you read?

Every day. I have to read. Even if I go to bed completely buggered I will still read for hours.

What characteristics/traits would make up your dream book?

I love books of new beginnings and redemption. Angst and steamy scenes are always welcomed. My dream book would be something that grips me so tightly that I can completely disappear into and forget real life.

How do you choose what to read next?

I have certain authors that I will read whatever they release and I also get suggestions from author friends and I definitely look at what is being talked about on Facebook and twitter. I have found some amazing books that way.

So you’ve started a book and discover it’s not for you. Are you more likely to discard it or finish it?

I will finish it. There have been books that I’ve started reading and wasn’t really getting it but then BAM it hit me and I loved it. I never want to risk not reading a gem so I always finish what I start.

If you could read any book again, for the first time, what book would you choose?

Probably Taking Chances by Molly McAdams. It destroyed me but it was one of the first books that made me feel so strongly. I was a sobbing mess but it made me realise that you can take those kind of risks with books. I love Molly.

What is it about books that makes you want to read? What is your favourite part about reading?

Books are my escape. Whether you are on top of the world or in the depths of despair, a book can change everything. It’s about the journey you take with the characters. If a book can get me thinking about it days after I’ve finished then it’s done its job. My favourite part of reading is the escapism. I may be a writer but I’ll always be a reader first.
